An assessment first, then a firm quote
Tell us what the rug is and what worries you. We identify fibre and dye first, explain what a wash will and will not fix, and give you a firm quote before the rug touches water.

Where Brisbane's serious rugs live
Persian cottages, designer towers
Inner Brisbane holds the city's most serious rugs. Paddington and Red Hill cottages keep hand-knotted Persian and tribal pieces their owners chose deliberately, New Farm's grand homes have rugs older than the kitchens around them, and the apartment towers at Kangaroo Point and South Brisbane are full of designer viscose and silk that punishes careless cleaning. Rugs like these are why we still wash by hand at our own facility, the way they were made to be washed.
Under-house damp and locked-up apartments
The suburbs themselves work against a rug. Classic Queenslanders on the ridges are shaded and closed in underneath, so anything stored down there comes out smelling of damp. Apartments have the opposite problem, trapping humid air when they are locked up over the summer holidays. Either way the answer is not a surface clean. The rug needs to be fully immersed, rinsed clean and dried under controlled airflow until nothing damp is left in the foundation.
Rugs stored under the house are our most common inner-city mould rescue.
From the woolstores to your wash
There is a nice piece of history in this work. Sixteen woolstores went up along the Teneriffe riverfront in the first half of the 1900s, grading and storing Queensland's wool clip, and the same brick buildings now hold wool rugs on their old timber floors. We have washed inner Brisbane's rugs for 29 years, and wool still gets the treatment it always did: slow, by hand, in water, then dried with patience.
What an honest assessment covers
Collectors ask us harder questions than anyone else, and that suits us. Before a wash is agreed we identify the fibre, test the dyes for bleed, check the foundation and the fringe, and say plainly what the wash will fix and what it will not. If a mark is permanent, you hear it now, not at delivery. And if the rug does not justify the spend, we say that too. The whole inner run sits within about 5 km of the GPO, so door and lobby pickups stack onto one loop.
That loop crosses the river twice a day when the runs are full. The driver collects the rolled rug, the quote comes before any washing, and the rug is usually home in 7 days, fully dry.

The places our inner-city run passes
Six inner-city landmarks our pickup loop threads between.
The riverside park on the old racecourse, with the 1928 Powerhouse at its edge.
New Farm's home streets around the park are one of our oldest inner-city pickup grounds, full of the wool and Persian rugs this side of town is known for.

The land ran as a racecourse from 1846 until 1913, when the council bought it for parkland. The rose garden dates from 1914 and holds thousands of roses, the jacaranda avenues are an October fixture, and the Brisbane Tramway Powerhouse next door, built 1927 to 1928 and decommissioned in 1971, reopened in 2000 as the Powerhouse arts centre.
The 20-metre volcanic cliffs opposite the CBD, quarried by convicts from the 1820s.
The apartments along the clifftop and River Terrace are regular stops for us, and a rolled rug in a lift makes these the easiest collections on the inner loop.

The cliffs are Brisbane tuff, volcanic rock laid down about 230 million years ago, quarried from around 1826 under Captain Patrick Logan of the Moreton Bay penal settlement to build the early town. The quarry wall left behind runs roughly 600 metres and is now one of the best urban climbing crags anywhere, floodlit at night above the riverwalk.
The Brisbane Cricket Ground, Test venue since 1931.
Woolloongabba, East Brisbane and Dutton Park sit right on our route out to the M3, so Gabba-side pickups often start the inner-city run.

The ground at Woolloongabba hosted its first Test in November 1931, Australia against South Africa, and the nickname comes straight from the suburb's name. For decades the Gabba's pace and bounce made it Australia's traditional first Test of the summer, and it doubles as the home ground for AFL in Brisbane.
The riverside wool warehouses that became Brisbane's best-known apartment conversions.
Wool was graded and stored in these buildings for decades. Now the same floors hold wool rugs, and we still handle them the old way, washed by hand at our facility.

Sixteen woolstores went up along the Teneriffe riverfront in the first half of the 1900s, one of the most cohesive groups of mercantile buildings in Queensland. After the 1991 urban renewal push most were converted to apartments by 2000, keeping the brick facades and heavy timber interiors, with the 1912 London Woolstore and 1926 Mactaggarts among the landmarks.
Queensland's oldest surviving building, convict-built in 1828 on Wickham Terrace.
Spring Hill's terraces and cottages around the windmill are five minutes from our CBD pickup stops, and heritage owners here are exactly who asks us for careful hand washing.

The tower was built in 1828 to grind grain for the penal settlement, though the mill design barely worked and convicts ended up driving a treadmill instead. It later served as a signal station, an observatory point, the first home of the Queensland Museum and the site of Queensland's first television broadcast demonstration in 1934, and it joined the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.
The Saturday market under the Moreton Bay figs beside the river at West End.
West End and Highgate Hill households, half Queenslander and half apartment, book on the same Saturday-friendly inner run, and their kilims and tribal rugs are a staple of our wash floor.

The market runs every Saturday from early morning at Davies Park, with more than 150 stalls of produce, food and secondhand finds under a canopy of giant Moreton Bay fig trees. It has been part of West End's identity for decades, through its earlier life as the Green Flea and Davies Park markets.

Inner Brisbane rug questions, answered straight
Which inner suburbs do you collect from?
All of them. New Farm, Teneriffe and the Valley on the north bank, Paddington, Red Hill and Spring Hill on the ridges, West End and Highgate Hill inside the river loop, and Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane and Woolloongabba across the water. One inner-city run covers the lot, and pickup is free.
How do you know a wash will not ruin an old rug?
Because we test before we commit. Fibre is identified, dyes are tested for bleed, and the wash method is matched to how the rug was made. Hand-knotted and antique pieces are washed by hand, never machine scrubbed, and we have been doing exactly this for 29 years.
A cat sprayed our hand-knotted rug in the apartment. Is it saveable?
Usually, and the sooner it reaches us the better. Cat urine is the harshest of the common accidents; it soaks into the foundation and can shift dyes if it sits. We treat the source with enzymes, then wash the rug in full immersion. After inspection we will tell you honestly if the dyes have been touched.
I am in an apartment tower. Is pickup complicated?
No, it is the easiest kind. Roll the rug, meet the driver in the lobby, done. We collect from buildings in Kangaroo Point, South Brisbane and Newstead every week, and the rug comes back to the same lobby fully dry.
My viscose rug watermarked when I spot-cleaned it. Can that be fixed?
Often, yes. Viscose punishes DIY cleaning; water alone can leave marks and stiffen the pile. A controlled full wash and flat drying usually evens the finish out. We will inspect it and tell you honestly what can be recovered.
What does an honest assessment actually mean?
It means we sometimes advise against washing. If a rug's value does not justify the work, or damage cannot be recovered, we say so before you spend a dollar. Inner Brisbane owners tend to appreciate the straight answer.
