Specialist Sheepskin & Lambskin Rug Cleaning for Southeast Queensland

Genuine sheepskin and lambskin rugs are not woven textiles — they are natural hides with a soft wool pile bonded to a leather or suede backing. That makes them beautiful but delicate, and the wrong clean can ruin them. The wool can felt and mat permanently, and the hide backing can harden, shrink or curl if it is over-wet. In Southeast Queensland and Northern Rivers NSW, where humidity sits high for much of the year, a sheepskin that stays damp too long also risks mould and a lasting musty smell. That is why Premier Rug Cleaning never wet-cleans these hides in your home. Every sheepskin and lambskin rug is collected and treated at our dedicated 313sqm facility at Yatala, where we control moisture, dwell time and drying. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians, we clean the pile while protecting the hide.

Why DIY and In-Home Cleaning Ruins Sheepskin

Sheepskin is one of the easiest rugs to damage with good intentions. Hot water, ordinary detergents and machine washing strip the natural lanolin that keeps the wool soft, slippery and dirt-resistant — leaving the pile dull, stiff and prone to matting. Scrubbing or rubbing a wet hide felts the fibres into a hard, irreversible texture, and full soaking can board the leather backing so it dries crisp and curled at the edges. In our humid SEQ and Northern Rivers climate, a sheepskin left to dry on the floor stays damp underneath for days, inviting mould and odour into the hide. In-home and van-based cleaning simply cannot control the gentle washing, careful reshaping and steady drying these hides demand. Our off-site Yatala process is built for exactly that.

Why Choose Premier Rug Cleaning for Sheepskin & Lambskin

Hide-Safe Gentle Wash

We use cool water and pH-appropriate wool products, never hot water or harsh detergent, so the lanolin and the leather backing are protected throughout the clean.

No Matting, No Felting

We never scrub or agitate the wool. The pile is cleaned gently and brushed out while damp and again when dry, so it returns soft and fluffy — not hard and matted.

Controlled Yatala Facility

Every hide is cleaned and dried at our dedicated facility where we manage moisture and drying — not on your floor in the back of a van.

29 Years With Natural Fibres

We have cleaned countless wool, hide and specialty rugs across the region. Free pickup and delivery, and a finish that looks and feels right.

Our Sheepskin & Lambskin Cleaning Process: Inside Our Yatala Facility

Every hide follows a careful, fibre-appropriate process — here is what happens after we collect it from your home.

Inspection & Hide Assessment

We check the wool, the leather or suede backing and any seams, identify the hide type and test a hidden area so we choose the gentlest safe method.

Gentle Dusting & Pre-Treatment

We work loose dust and grit from the pile with low-agitation dusting and spot-treat soiled or stained areas before any wash, never rubbing the fibres.

Cool Hand Wash

The wool is washed by hand in cool water with a sheepskin-safe wool product that lifts soil and odour while preserving lanolin and protecting the backing.

Reshape & Brush

While still damp the hide is gently stretched and reshaped to its original size, and the pile is brushed out with a soft wire brush to keep it soft and prevent curling.

Controlled Flat Drying

The rug is dried flat in our climate-controlled room, away from direct heat and sun, then brushed again once dry so it comes back fluffy, fresh and fully dry.

Sheepskin & Lambskin Rugs We Clean

wine stain

Single & Small Lambskin Rugs

Soft single-pelt lambskins used as throws or accent rugs are washed gently by hand and reshaped, returning supple and full without matting.

Large Multi-Pelt Sheepskins

Stitched four-, six- and eight-pelt rugs are too large and heavy to safely wash at home; we clean and dry them flat at our facility to keep every seam and panel even.

Paint Stain

Long-Wool & Curly Fleece Hides

Long-pile and curly fleeces matt easily when handled roughly; we wash and brush them carefully to restore loft without felting the wool.

Dog Urine

Leather & Suede-Backed Hides

The pelt backing can harden or curl if over-wet, so we control moisture and reshape it while damp to keep the hide soft and lying flat.

Pet & Odour Build-Up

Sheepskins favoured by pets collect hair, oils and odour; we lift these with gentle, hide-safe treatment rather than harsh chemicals that strip lanolin.

Blood Stain

Spills, Stains & Yellowing

Food, drink and body-oil marks and general dulling are spot-treated and gently washed to brighten the wool without bleaching or scrubbing.

Matted & Stiff Old Rugs

Hides that have gone hard, flat or musty from past wet cleaning or storage are carefully revived where possible with gentle washing and re-brushing.

Faux & Synthetic Sheepskin

Faux sheepskin is a synthetic fibre, not a hide, and is treated differently again; we assess every rug first and clean it to suit its true construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Genuine sheepskin and lambskin are natural hides, not woven rugs, so they need specialist handling. We gently hand wash the wool in cool water, preserve the lanolin, protect the leather backing and dry the hide flat at our Yatala facility — never a machine wash or hot-water clean.
Not when it is done correctly. Matting and felting happen when the wool is scrubbed or agitated, and a hard backing comes from over-wetting and soaking. We avoid both — washing gently, reshaping the hide while damp and brushing the pile so it returns soft and fluffy.
Machine washing and hot water strip the natural lanolin, felt the wool and can shrink or curl the leather backing beyond repair. Sheepskin needs a gentle, controlled cool wash, careful reshaping and flat drying — which is exactly what our off-site process provides.
The pelt backing can harden or curl if a hide is soaked or dried badly. We keep moisture controlled, gently stretch and reshape the backing while it is still damp, and dry it flat in our climate-controlled room so it stays soft and sits flat.
No. Wet-cleaning a hide on your floor risks trapped moisture, mould and a stiff, curled backing in our humid climate. We collect your rug and clean it at our dedicated facility where moisture and drying are fully controlled.

Cowhide cleaned carefully with pickup from Sunshine Coast
We sent the lambskin rug in because the dull texture needed more care than a normal vacuum. I liked that they treated it gently rather than soaking it without thought. We were happy to put it back in the nursery.

Spill cleaned carefully after pickup
We sent the sheepskin rug in because the light spill needed more care than a normal vacuum. They explained how they would handle it and collected it from Annerley. It came back soft, clean, and pleasant to have in the room again. The useful part was that the result matched what they said at the start, especially around the limits of old marks and worn fibres. I was careful choosing someone because the sheepskin rug was not something I wanted damaged. That made a noticeable difference once the rug was back down.

No harsh smell in Yeronga
Our lambskin rug had flat-looking wool, and I was worried it would go stiff if cleaned badly. The care instructions afterwards were practical and easy to follow. It smells clean without feeling stiff. The service took the awkward part of the job off our hands.

Soft and fresh again in Hendra
The lambskin rug was looking flat and tired from everyday use. They handled it differently from a normal rug, which was reassuring. The texture feels much nicer now.
