An honest figure for a rug with a history

Age, dye stability and foundation strength decide everything, so the driver reads the rug before quoting it. You get a plain account of what washing will and will not fix, and whether the piece is worth putting through, priced firmly per rug at the door.

Rug Cleaning Paddington's Antiques Deserve

The postcard suburb keeps its rugs old

Paddington is Brisbane's postcard: tin-and-timber Queenslanders and workers cottages painted every heritage shade, protected by character controls and renovated with real money and real care. Interiors favour the old-with-new mix, polished hoop pine floors and antique furniture, and the rugs were chosen or inherited to match: Persian, Turkish, Chinese deco pieces and quality wool.

Few suburbs in the city hold more antique rugs per street.

Hillside shade and what it does to old wool

Breezes work the ridgetops, but the gullies hold humid air after summer storms, and the deep shade of established gardens keeps the lower rooms of hillside homes damp for days. Old wool drinks it in quietly. Immersion washing at Yatala releases years of trapped grit and moisture from antique pile without harming the dyes, and controlled drying finishes the job the hillside shade never lets the sun do.

The suburb that trades in the past

The 1929 picture palace on Latrobe Terrace has sold antiques instead of tickets since 1985, which tells you everything about Paddington's relationship with old things: they are found, kept and looked after. Washing the rugs that furnish that instinct is skilled work. Dyes from before synthetic chemistry are tested piece by piece, fragile foundations are flagged before water is involved, and a rug that only needs surface dusting is sent back unwashed with our compliments. Twenty-nine years of hand washing is our version of provenance.

Rug Cleaning Paddington

Cleaning for the antique and inherited pieces that furnish Brisbane's postcard suburb.

Rugs here are part of the architecture, so they are treated like it: assessed piece by piece, collected rolled on the weekly inner west run, and returned dry to the hoop pine they belong on.

  • Part of the architecture
  • Assessed piece by piece
  • Returned to the hoop pine

Rug Washing Paddington

Immersion washing calibrated to old wool and the dyes that came before chemistry.

Vegetable dyes are tested before water touches them, the bath is gentle and complete, and the controlled dry protects a fragile foundation. Old rugs come back years younger, safely.

  • Vegetable dyes tested
  • Gentle and complete
  • Years younger, safely
Most popular

Stain Removal

A mark on an antique calls for treatment that honours what the rug is made from.

Identification comes first because old dyes and modern removers are a dangerous pair. The honest prognosis follows, then careful, tested work.

  • Respect before removal
  • A dangerous pair avoided
  • Tested, careful work

Pet Stain and Odour

The family dog and the family Persian usually share a room in Paddington.

Accidents reaching the foundation threaten dye as well as air. Source-level removal in the bath ends the odour, and dye risks are explained before treatment.

  • The shared-room problem
  • Source-level removal
  • Dye risks explained

Odour Removal

Shaded lower rooms give old wool a damp smell owners slowly stop noticing.

Years of hillside damp leave the wool in a single immersion, and the reset is total. The smell is not covered, it is gone, which is the only version worth paying for.

  • The smell owners adapt to
  • Banked load stripped
  • Nothing left to notice

Rug Spot Cleaning

A single mark on a good piece deserves a scalpel, not a sledgehammer.

Targeted treatment is quoted when it honestly solves the problem. When it will not, we explain what will, and the decision remains yours.

  • Scalpel, not sledgehammer
  • Quoted when honest
  • Yours to decide

Rug Steam Cleaning

The modern synthetics in kids' rooms take steam extraction without complaint.

Steam suits durable fibres and quick turnarounds. The assessment guarantees no antique is ever put through a process meant for the playroom.

  • For the modern pieces
  • Quick where suitable
  • Antiques never risked

Rug Dry Cleaning

Silk highlights, fragile foundations and unstable dyes take the low-moisture route.

Testing decides which pieces cannot take the bath, and low-moisture methods then clean within those limits, with every trade-off explained beforehand.

  • Decided by testing
  • Cleaned within limits
  • Trade-offs beforehand

Water Damage Restoration

A leaking heritage roof over an antique rug is an emergency with a deadline.

Old wool soaked through has days before mould and dye migration set in. Fast collection, controlled drying and correct order save most pieces.

  • An emergency, treated as one
  • Days, not weeks
  • Most pieces saved

Mould Rug Cleaning

Under-house storage on a shaded hillside is where heirlooms quietly suffer.

On sound antique wool, early mould washes away safely. Where an old foundation is already weakened, the conversation about what survives happens before the spending does.

  • Where heirlooms suffer
  • Full removal when early
  • Frank scope first

Rug Moth Treatment

Moths prize exactly what Paddington prizes: old, undisturbed wool.

Washing ends an infestation at larva, egg and adult alike. Losses are documented and shown, never hidden, and careful storage keeps the piece whole for the next generation.

  • A shared taste, ended
  • Damage documented
  • Protected for the next generation

Stain Protection

A protectant finish gives pale antiques a margin their age has earned.

Applied evenly after washing, it is invisible on the pile and slows every future accident enough to blot. Sensible insurance for irreplaceable pieces.

  • A margin age has earned
  • Invisible on the pile
  • Insurance for the irreplaceable

Stars, tanks and salt water

Three Paddington fixtures with second lives

A cinema that sells antiques, a water tower that outlived its job and the pool below street level.

Latrobe Terrace and the old Plaza Theatre

The ridgetop shopping strip anchored by a 1929 picture palace full of antiques.

The strip that sells antique furniture also creates our favourite work: the rugs that go under it. We wash antique wool by hand at Yatala, with an honest assessment first on every piece.

Paddington Water Tower

The 1927 landmark tank on Archibald's Hill, visible across half of Brisbane.

The tower went up because hilltop homes needed proper infrastructure, not improvisation. Rug care is the same: a facility with wash floors and drying rooms beats any driveway process, and ours is 40 minutes down the M1.

Ithaca Pool

The Caxton Street end's tucked-away heated saltwater pool.

A salt pool teaches a useful lesson: water plus the right chemistry cleans gently. Our wash process is built on the same idea, matched to wool and vegetable dyes instead of swimmers.

Good to know

Paddington owners ask

The rug is 70 years old. Is immersion safe for it?

Usually, but the assessment decides. Dyes are tested, the foundation is checked, and if full immersion is not safe we say so and offer what is. Old wool that passes the checks comes out of the wash looking decades fresher.

Would you actually tell me it needs nothing?

If that is the truth, yes. Some pieces only need surface dusting and a rotation, and we say exactly that at the door. Overselling wash jobs is how cleaners lose suburbs like this one.

What does rug washing cost in Paddington?

Each rug carries its own firm quote based on size, fibre and condition, given at inspection. Pickup and return are free on the weekly run, and extra rugs in the same booking are $20 off each.

Does the run stop at Red Hill, Bardon and Milton too?

Red Hill and Petrie Terrace share Paddington's day. Bardon and Milton sit just across the group line and are covered by our western runs the same week.

What if we are not satisfied with the wash?

Say so inside 48 hours of the rug's return and we run the wash again for nothing. Standard turnaround is seven days, and the 48-hour express is there at extra cost when a deadline demands it.

Pet urine on an antique rug: is immersion still safe?

Usually, and it is the only treatment that actually ends the problem. Urine residue sits in the foundation, and on antique pieces it threatens old dyes as well as the air in the room, so speed matters. We test dye stability first, wash the source out in full immersion where the piece allows it, and dry the rug completely. Where age or dye damage limits what is safe, you hear exactly that before any work begins.
