Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

A cowhide is leather first, and leather hates a soak

Every woven rug in the house is built to take water: fibre through a foundation, water in and water out. A cowhide is the opposite. Behind the hair is a tanned skin, and how that skin is treated decides whether the rug stays soft and lies flat or ends up stiff as cardboard with the corners lifting off the floor. Too much water, uncontrolled drying, heat or direct sun all push it the wrong way, and none of it can be washed back out later. Meanwhile the hair on top behaves like any pile: it collects dust, body oils and spills, and a pet accident does not stay in the hair, it soaks through to the skin underneath. That combination, a surface that needs cleaning sitting on a material that punishes water, is why a cowhide belongs with someone who cleans hides, not under a hose or in a hire machine.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

A soaked hide dries hard and curledSoak a cowhide, then let it dry however it likes, and the leather dries stiff and shrunken with the edges curling up. There is no later treatment that softens a hide that has gone that way, which is why how much moisture goes in, and how it comes back out, has to be controlled from the first minute.
Heat and sun set the damageA heater, a hot car boot or an afternoon over the line in full sun dries the skin too fast and unevenly. The hide stiffens, the shape distorts, and the hair loses its sheen. A hide has to dry flat, slowly, away from direct heat and sun.
Pet accidents soak through to the skinUrine does not stay in the hair. It wicks through to the hide underneath and dries into salts that smell again every humid week, which is why a perfumed spray over the top buys a fortnight at best. It has to be cleaned at the source, gently enough that the leather is not collateral damage.
A damp hide sours fast in this climateSoutheast Queensland and the Northern Rivers stay humid for months at a stretch. A cowhide that goes back on the floor with moisture still in the skin turns musty from underneath, and that smell is the hide telling you it never properly dried. Drying flat under managed airflow is the unglamorous half of the job and the half most people skip.

“Moving showed how dusty the wool rug had become around the edges. They collected it from Forest Lake and worked with our moving dates. It took one job off the move-out list. For our house, a clean, dry rug mattered more than making it look artificially new. We use that room every day, so leaving the rug rolled up was not really an option.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Cleaned by hand, moisture controlled

Your cowhide is cleaned by hand with a product chosen for hair-on hides, and the moisture is kept to what the skin can take. No hose, no machine drum, no carpet detergent, and no guessing, which is the whole difference between a hide that comes home soft and flat and one that comes home like a boot sole.

Checked over first, and told straight

An IICRC-certified technician looks at the hide, the hair and the edges, and tests a hidden spot before anything else happens. If the skin has already stiffened from an earlier soaking, or a stain has reached the leather and is unlikely to shift, you hear it up front. Honest assessment before any work starts, every time.

Dried flat in a controlled room

The hide dries flat under managed airflow at our Yatala facility, away from direct heat and sun, so the skin keeps its shape and the rug goes back on the floor lying flat instead of curling at the corners. That slow, controlled dry is what protects the leather.

Collected, returned and guaranteed

Free pickup and delivery from your door (oversized rugs needing two people, and areas far outside our service area, may attract a charge, and we confirm that in your quote). A cowhide is often the small piece in a house that has bigger rugs, so put them on the same run: $20 off every extra rug in the same pickup, and every job carries our free re-wash guarantee if you are not happy.

Easy pickup for our synthetic rug in Beachmere

Mould issue handled in Fernvale
The room felt stale because of the damp smell in the jute rug. I liked that they talked about drying as much as cleaning. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away. I was glad we did not have to replace it.

A fresh woven rug after the pet accident in Kearneys Spring
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Musty smell gone in Jondaryan
Our large area rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They collected it from Jondaryan and explained the mould cleaning process clearly. A couple of faint marks remain, but the rug feels much healthier.

Puppy smell gone for our Chinese wool rug
The Chinese wool rug had been rolled up after a pet accident because we could not use it in the lounge. The odour is gone so we are happy using it again. It was a sensible result for a rug that gets real use.

Glad we finally booked the clean in Toowong
I booked from Toowong because the shaggy rug was overdue. The shaggy rug came back fresher, softer and ready to use again in the hallway. I would use them again without overthinking it.

Off-site clean helped in Nathan
After a few years in the main room, the Oriental rug needed a proper wash rather than another quick vacuum. The collection made sense because the rug was too bulky for my car. It came back dry, clean and ready to put straight down. That small change made the room feel cleaner overall.

Good help with old stains in St Lucia
The Moroccan rug had reached the point where spot cleaning was not enough. The old stains are much softer now, and the colours look cleaner in daylight. It was an easy result to be happy with. The St Lucia pickup was handled well.

Good to know

Common questions

Can a cowhide rug be washed?

Not the way a woven rug is, and that is the point of this page. A woven rug can be fully immersed; a cowhide cannot, because the tanned skin behind the hair hardens and shrinks if it is soaked. We clean the hair and the soiling by hand with the moisture controlled to what the hide can take, then dry it flat under managed airflow. The hide stays soft, the shape stays flat, and the dirt still leaves.

Can you get dog or cat urine out of a cowhide?

Often, and it depends how far it has gone. Urine wicks through the hair into the skin, so we test the hidden side first, clean it at the source gently enough to protect the leather, and dry the hide slowly with no heat. Where urine has sat in the skin for a long time, the honest answer is an improvement rather than a reset, and you are told which one you are looking at before you spend anything.

My cowhide has gone stiff or curled, can you fix it?

Sometimes we can improve it, and sometimes the damage is permanent, and we will tell you which at assessment. A hide that dried unevenly may relax when it is properly cleaned and dried flat under control. A hide that has been thoroughly soaked and baked hard, though, has changed at the leather level, and no wash undoes that. You get the honest verdict before anything is booked.

How do I look after a cowhide at home?

Shake it outside now and then, keep it out of all-day direct sun, and deal with spills straight away: blot with a dry cloth, then a barely damp one, and never rub or flood the spot. What does the damage is the full home wash, the hose, the bucket of soapy water, the afternoon drying over the line. If it needs more than a shake and a blot, that is the point to hand it over.

Do you cover my area, and how does pickup work?

Our collection runs cover Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Northern NSW, so the same hide-safe clean is available whether you are ten minutes from the facility or two hours away. We arrange a pickup around your day, the hide is cleaned and dried flat at the Yatala facility, and it comes back to your door. A distance fee applies at the far ends of Northern NSW and the Sunshine Coast, and we tell you exactly what it is before anything is booked.

What does cowhide rug cleaning cost?

Each hide is quoted on its own, because a calfskin and a full-size cowhide are not the same job, and condition counts as much as size. You approve the price before any work starts. Quotes are free with no obligation, and we take $20 off every extra rug in the same pickup, so the cowhide can ride along with the lounge room rug and save you money.

What if I'm not happy with the result?

Tell us within 48 hours and we re-wash the rug free of charge. We also give you an honest assessment before we start, so if a smell, mark or repair is unlikely to come up perfectly you hear that from us first, not after you have paid.
