Knots, dyes and an honest figure
An academic household with a Qashqai on the lounge floor does not want marketing; it wants method. Ours is simple to state: dye stability tested first, full immersion hand washing at Yatala second, controlled drying third, and a firm price agreed before the rug leaves your cottage.

I wanted a cleaner result without the rug feeling overworked from our Dutton Park home. The shaggy rug came back fresher, softer and ready to use again in the nursery.

Rug Washing Dutton Park: Method Over Marketing
A century of staying residential
Dutton Park climbs a steep river hill three kilometres south of the CBD, its tight blocks holding timber workers cottages and gabled Queenslanders that have stayed residential for a century while a jail, a Victorian cemetery and now the Cross River Rail works filled in the edges. Owners skew academic and professional, the university a bridge away, and the rugs reflect it: genuine Persian and tribal pieces bought with knowledge, laid over original hoop pine boards that renovation after renovation has kept bare.
At Yatala the whole rug is immersed, washed by hand, rinsed and dried under control, which is the treatment a hand-knotted piece was always built to receive.
Owners who did the reading
A household that can name its rug's weaving region wants a washer who can read the same signs, and that is the conversation we enjoy most. Since the green bridge opened in 2006 the university has flowed across the river daily, and with it a population that researches everything, including who should be trusted with a Qashqai. The honest answer has not changed in 29 years: dye testing first, full immersion second, and a straight word whenever a piece needs something we would not recommend.
What the hill does and the bath undoes
The river wraps the suburb's western flank and the hill traps humid air in the gully streets each summer. Timber cottages on stumps breathe that moisture up through the floor, and a wool pile takes it in season after season, packing dust and odour into the base of the knots. Surface cleaning cannot reach any of that.

Three reasons Brisbane knows Dutton Park
The jail, the cemetery terraces and the bridge that carries no cars.
Queensland's most famous prison, working from 1883 to 1989 and now a museum.
Everyone in Brisbane can place Boggo Road, which makes it the easiest landmark on our inner-south loop: Dutton Park pickups run within sight of its walls every week.
Boggo Road opened in July 1883 to replace the old Petrie Terrace prison and held Queensland's prisoners for over a century before closing in 1989, notorious by then for its conditions and riots. The surviving buildings, mostly 1901 to 1903, include the state's only intact prison division built on 19th century principles, walled exercise yards and observation tower included, and history tours now walk the cell blocks.
The riverside Victorian cemetery below the jail, burying Brisbane since 1870.
Families in Dutton Park's oldest houses have been here nearly as long as the cemetery, and their rugs carry that same depth of history. Inherited pieces get our honest assessment before anything else happens.
South Brisbane Cemetery opened in 1870 on 27 riverside acres and holds close to 20,000 graves, among them pioneers, politicians and the executed prisoners of the jail up the hill. Its steep terraces stepping down to the river make it one of the city's most atmospheric heritage sites, and the Friends group runs night tours through the headstones.
The 2006 green bridge to the university, the first in Australia built without cars in mind.
The bridge fills these streets with academics, and academics research their tradespeople. The honest answer to that research: full immersion hand washing at Yatala, not a spray and vacuum in the lounge room.
The 390 metre cable-stayed Eleanor Schonell Bridge opened on 17 December 2006, linking Dutton Park to the St Lucia campus across the river. It was the first bridge in the country designed to exclude private vehicles entirely, carrying buses, cyclists and walkers, and it made Dutton Park the university's back door.

Questions from the hill
Can you wash a hand-knotted Persian without damaging it?
That is the rug our method exists for. Dyes are tested piece by piece, the wash is done by hand, and drying is controlled to protect the foundation. Machine-made rugs are the simple ones; hand-knotted is where 29 years of experience matter.
Do you clean silk or part-silk rugs?
We assess them individually. Some silk and silk-inlay pieces suit our process, others need declining honestly, and the inspection tells us which is which before you commit to anything.
What does it cost to clean a rug in Dutton Park?
Priced per rug on size, fibre and condition, fixed at inspection. Collection and redelivery on the inner-south loop are free, and a $20 discount lands on every rug after the first.
Do you collect from West End, Highgate Hill or Annerley?
Yes, all on the same weekly loop as Dutton Park, with the wider inner south close behind. Neighbours can share a pickup and each qualify for the multi-rug discount.
How long will the rug be away, and what if I have concerns after?
The standard cycle runs seven days, and a paid 48-hour express exists for deadlines. Afterwards you have 48 hours to tell us about any concern, and the piece goes back through the entire wash free.
Urine on a hand-knotted rug. What are the odds?
Better than most owners fear, if the wash happens properly. Urine sinks through the pile into the knots and foundation, where sprays and blotting never reach, and it keeps returning on humid days until it is removed. Immersion dissolves the residue at the source. Dye damage from an old accident is a different matter, and the inspection shows you exactly where you stand.
