The wash your rug needs, and nothing it does not
Thoughtful buyers make our favourite clients. The driver identifies the rug at the door, explains what washing will and will not achieve for it, and fixes the price before collection. A hand-knotted piece and an op-shop find get different advice, and sometimes the advice is to save your money.

I wanted a cleaner result without the rug feeling overworked after noticing it in the office. The colours look clearer, the room feels cleaner, and the service was simple from booking to return.

Rug Cleaning Kelvin Grove: Cottage, Village and Share House
Three populations, one wash floor
Three housing populations share Kelvin Grove: renovated workers cottages and gabled timber homes on the old streets, the compact townhouses and apartments of the urban village, and student share houses closer to campus. The owner-occupied end skews academic and creative, with wool and flatweave rugs chosen deliberately for timber floors.
The village runs smaller rugs on hard floors, and the share houses run their rugs very hard indeed.
Ridges, gullies and slow-drying gardens
The ridges catch the breeze but the gullies between them hold Brisbane's summer humidity, and older timber homes shaded by established gardens dry slowly after storms. A stumped floor also breathes damp air up into the pile from below. Full immersion at Yatala lifts out trapped moisture, dust and allergens in one wash, and controlled drying makes sure none of it travels back with the rug.
Honest maths for every kind of owner
A suburb of professors and first-years owns everything from hand-knotted wool to op-shop finds, and the same wash does not suit them all. So the assessment leads: the driver identifies fibre and construction at the door, prices the piece on its merits, and says plainly when a wash costs more than a rug will ever return. The school on the hill has taught since 1875 and the theatre company down the road has run since 1925. Fundamentals done properly, for 29 years in our case, are clearly a local habit.

Where your rug is washed
What holds Kelvin Grove together
A university village, a theatre in the round and a school on the hill since 1875.
The mixed university-and-residential precinct built around QUT's creative campus.
Village apartments and studios have hard floors and no laundry big enough for a rug. Our driver collects rolled rugs from the whole precinct on the weekly inner northwest run.
The urban village was planned by QUT and the state as a piece of city where campus, apartments, shops and studios share the same streets, wrapped around the university's Creative Industries Precinct. It gave Kelvin Grove a genuine centre: a supermarket, cafes, student accommodation and public spaces where the suburb actually gathers.
Australia's only purpose-built theatre in the round, home of La Boite since 2003.
Theatre people understand that the real work happens off stage. Rugs are the same: the visible clean is easy, but the wash that removes what is deep in the pile happens at our facility, not in your lounge room.
La Boite began as Brisbane Repertory Theatre in 1925 and is Australia's longest continuously running theatre company. In November 2003 it moved from its old Hale Street box into the Roundhouse in the urban village, an orange-brick drum seating 400 around a stage that can play in the round or as a thrust. The company's century of Brisbane theatre now happens entirely in Kelvin Grove.
The school on the hill since 1875, now one of Brisbane's biggest state colleges.
A school that has run since 1875 knows the value of doing fundamentals properly. Our fundamental is a hand wash and a complete dry, the same process we have practised for 29 years.
Kelvin Grove Road School opened on 3 May 1875 with 132 pupils, in the same year Queensland legislated free, compulsory education, and the site has taught continuously ever since. Today's Kelvin Grove State College teaches from prep to year twelve, and generation after generation of local families has walked up the same hill to it.

Kelvin Grove wants to know
Can you tell me what my rug actually is?
Usually, yes. Twenty-nine years of handling wool, silk, viscose and every blend between means the driver can generally identify construction and fibre at the door, and the wash method follows from that identification rather than guesswork.
Is a cheap rug worth professionally washing?
Sometimes no, and we will say so. The maths is simple: if the wash costs more than the rug will ever give back, keep your money. A sound wool piece, though, almost always repays the care.
How do you price rugs in Kelvin Grove?
Rugs are priced one by one on size, fibre and condition, quoted firm at inspection. Collection and redelivery are free, and each rug after the first in one booking comes down $20.
We are in the urban village apartments. Does pickup work there?
Easily. Roll the rug, note the building on the form, and the driver collects from the lobby on the weekly run. Herston, Red Hill and Newmarket ride the same day.
What is the turnaround, and what if the result disappoints?
The normal cycle is seven days, or 48 hours on the express at extra cost. If anything about the finished rug bothers you, report it before the 48-hour window closes and it goes back on the wash floor free.
A share-house rug smells of pet urine. Wash it or bin it?
Do the maths with us at the door. Urine sits in the foundation and no surface product removes it, so a rug worth keeping should go through the full bath at Yatala, where the source gets washed out and the piece dried right through. If the rug is a cheap survivor worth less than the work, we say so honestly and you save your money. Either way the smell only ends when the source leaves the foundation.
