Sanded boards deserve a washed rug

Half our Alderley calls come mid-renovation, when the sanding is finished and the old wool rug suddenly shows every year of its life. Before you price a replacement, let us look. A firm quote follows the inspection, and if the honest answer is that washing will not bring the piece back, that is the answer you get.

The Rug Washing Alderley Homes Actually Need

A township since the 1870s

Alderley has been a township since the 1870s, with a post office from 1878, a pub from 1886 and a station from 1899, and the housing stock still tells that story: gabled interwar bungalows, workers cottages and bigger Queenslanders along the ridgelines, most protected by Brisbane's traditional building character rules. Hoop pine and hardwood floors are stripped and polished back, and quality wool rugs become the soft layer that makes the hard work liveable. Plenty of those rugs arrived with the house.

Renovation never stops here.

Two waterways and a lot of sanding

The suburb rolls between two waterways, and the low streets near Kedron Brook and the Banks Street bushland hold humid air deep into summer. A timber home on stumps breathes from below as well as above, so rug pile collects moisture year round plus fine dust from whichever house on the street is being renovated this month. None of it vacuums out of the base of the weave. The bushland itself is a rare survivor, a remnant of the old Three Mile Scrub, and homes along its edge collect its dust as steadily as its birdsong.

The reset that matches the boards

At Yatala we immerse the whole rug, wash it by hand, rinse it clear and dry it in a controlled room, which is the only process that genuinely resets a wool pile. Owners here often time it with the renovation, sending the rug out before the sanders arrive and laying it back, washed, over boards that have just been finished. The rug and the floor start their next decade together.

Rug Cleaning Alderley

Careful cleaning for a suburb of character homes, where the rugs are as considered as the restorations around them.

Alderley's wool rugs live on stripped and polished floors and show every year of renovation dust. We collect them on the weekly inner-north loop and return them genuinely clean.

  • Considered rugs, considered care
  • Renovation dust removed at depth
  • Weekly inner-north collection

Rug Washing Alderley

Sanding dust works into a wool pile like flour into dough, and only full immersion gets it back out.

The rug is dye-tested, bathed at Yatala, hand worked and rinsed until nothing more releases. Controlled drying finishes at the foundation, safe for timber floors.

  • Sanding dust fully released
  • Rinsed until nothing more comes
  • Safe to lie on fresh boards
Most popular

Stain Removal

Paint drips, stain splashes and the everyday marks of family life all land on the rug during a renovation year.

Each mark is identified and treated to suit the fibre. Builder-era marks often lift better than owners fear, and the honest exceptions are named early.

  • Renovation marks a specialty
  • Fibre-suited chemistry only
  • Exceptions named before work

Pet Stain and Odour

Kedron Brook walks and backyard dogs keep Alderley rugs supplied with mud, dander and the occasional accident.

Urine reaching the foundation is beyond any spray, which is why the smell returns on warm days. The bath removes the source and the pattern breaks for good.

  • Brook mud and dander cleared
  • Warm-day relapses ended
  • The pattern broken at the source

Odour Removal

Rugs in stump-breathing timber homes absorb moisture from below, and the resulting mustiness settles in for the season.

The wash strips the accumulated load, then controlled drying finishes the work, removing both the smell and the conditions that made it.

  • Stump-breathing homes understood
  • Load and conditions both fixed
  • Fully dry, genuinely neutral

Rug Spot Cleaning

One dropped brush or one knocked glass does not need the full service, just an accurate fix.

We treat the spot, price the spot, and advise honestly if the surrounding pile has reached the point where a full wash makes better sense.

  • Accurate fixes for single marks
  • Spot-sized pricing
  • Honest advice on the wider pile

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hardy synthetics in the kids' rooms respond well to steam extraction when the trouble is superficial.

Steam shifts surface grime quickly on the right fibre. Dust at the weave base, the Alderley standard, still calls for immersion, and we say which is which.

  • Superficial trouble, fast fix
  • The right fibre steams well
  • Deep dust routed to the bath

Rug Dry Cleaning

Delicate weaves and unstable dyes from older houses get the low-moisture clean their construction demands.

The inspection test decides safely. Where a bath would risk the rug, the gentle route cleans within its limits, slower and entirely worth it.

  • Older construction respected
  • Tested before any decision
  • Slower and entirely worth it

Water Damage Restoration

An interwar roof mid-restoration is a storm risk, and the rug below it has days, not weeks, once soaked.

Controlled drying then washing at Yatala prevents mould and dye migration. Ring as soon as the water lands and the rug usually survives.

  • Mid-restoration roofs, known risk
  • Sequence beats mould every time
  • Early calls survive best

Mould Rug Cleaning

Humid brook-valley air grows mould under rugs that never move, especially in closed front rooms.

Early growth washes out entirely, advanced growth gets a frank scope, and the drying room ends the conditions that started it.

  • Brook-valley air, watched closely
  • Entire removal when early
  • Conditions ended, not paused

Rug Moth Treatment

Moths thrive in undisturbed wool, and rugs stored through a renovation give them months of peace.

The wash removes eggs, larvae and residue, damage is shown honestly, and storage advice covers the rest of the renovation calendar.

  • Renovation storage, moth season
  • Peace interrupted, rug saved
  • Advice for the months ahead

Stain Protection

After a wash, a protectant coat keeps the next incident on the surface, a sensible finish for a just-restored room.

It applies evenly, leaves the wool feeling exactly as it did, and pairs naturally with a rug going back onto brand-new boards.

  • A finish to match the room
  • Wool feels untouched
  • Natural pair with new boards

Bush, brook and the 1886 corner

Three places that explain Alderley

The scrub remnant, the family park and the pub that named the suburb's centre.

Banks Street Reserve

More than 20 hectares of the old Three Mile Scrub, still standing on the suburb's edge.

Households that pick a bushland-edge suburb tend to keep natural fibres underfoot as well. Wool responds to a genuine hand wash like nothing else, and we are honest about which pieces justify one.

Grinstead Park

The Kedron Brook park with the fort playground and a bike track painted like a real road.

Brook afternoons come home as mud, grass and bike grease on the hallway runner. That runner rides our truck rolled, and returns from Yatala clean through to the backing.

Alderley Arms Hotel

Licensed in 1886, the corner pub that anchored the original township.

A suburb that has kept one pub going since 1886 values things built to last. We hold the same view of wool rugs, and we have backed it with 29 years of washing them.

Good to know

Asked in Alderley

Will washing fade the colours in a wool rug?

Done properly, no. Dyes are tested before any water touches the rug, and the wash is matched to what the test says. Colour usually looks stronger afterwards because years of grey dust are no longer sitting on top of it.

Can the rug go out while the renovation is still running?

Yes, and many owners plan it exactly that way: the rug misses the messiest weeks of the job, then comes back washed to finished floors. Tell us your dates when you book.

What do you charge in Alderley?

Size, fibre and condition set the price, quoted firmly at inspection and held there. There is no charge for pickup or redelivery on the inner-north loop, and every rug after the first earns $20 off.

Do you collect from Newmarket, Grange or Gaythorne too?

All three. They share Alderley's weekly loop along with the rest of the inner northwest, so rugs from family a few streets over can travel on the same truck.

How long before the rug is home, and is the work guaranteed?

The standard turnaround is seven days, and paying extra buys a 48-hour express when you need one. Every wash carries the re-wash guarantee: mention a concern in the first 48 hours after return and the rug goes through again at no charge.

New floors, old dog. Can the rug lose the urine smell before it goes back down?

Yes, and before-the-boards-are-done is the ideal timing. Urine residue sits in the rug's foundation and re-announces itself in warm weather, which no surface product prevents. The immersion wash dissolves it at the source. If an accident has already stripped dye, you will know at inspection, while there is still time to decide.
