One firm figure at the top of the stairs
Good wool on hoop pine floors deserves a considered opinion. The driver inspects the rug where it lives, sets a firm figure from size, fibre and condition, and if the honest answer is that it only needs a vacuum and a rotation this year, that is the answer you get.

I was mainly worried about the fibres, not just the colour-run worry. The rug was valuable to us, so I wanted someone to check it before washing. The result was the kind of careful clean we hoped for.

Rug Cleaning Red Hill for Tin-and-Timber Houses
Cottages stacked on the contour lines
Red Hill climbs the ridges two to three kilometres northwest of the city, named for the red soil its first roads cut through. The hills kept the blocks small and the houses close, which is why the suburb still reads as workers cottages and gabled Queenslanders stacked along contour streets, most of them protected character housing. Under the verandahs and VJ walls the renovations run deep, but the floors stay old hoop pine and hardwood, and the rugs on them are chosen to be seen: wool, Persian and flatweave pieces that soften a timber house and take the traffic of family life.
Rugs in the shaded rooms carry moisture and fine dust deep in the pile.
What the gully streets do to a rug
The ridge tops catch every breeze going, and the gully streets keep the opposite habit: they hold damp after rain, and cottages built close together get limited airflow underneath and between. Immersion washing at our Yatala facility flushes the fibre completely, and our drying rooms send the rug home dry, which a winter cottage cannot manage on its own.
The wash floor is closer than you think
The family reviving the old Skate Arena site on Enoggera Terrace also runs the drive-in a few minutes from our Yatala facility, so the connection between Red Hill and our wash floor is older than this page. The drive is about 43 kilometres down Hale Street and the M1, and the truck does it weekly on the run that covers Paddington and Petrie Terrace. Rugs ride out rolled in the morning and come home inside the week, washed by the same hands that have done nothing but rugs for 29 years.

Three Red Hill landmarks with long stories
A 1914 church, the Broncos' clubhouse and the rink Brisbane still misses.
The 1914 brick landmark on Musgrave Road, visible from half of Brisbane.
A parish of modest means built something meant to last a century, then kept it standing. Good wool works on the same arithmetic: look after it properly and it outlives every cheaper thing around it.
Built between 1912 and 1914 to a Robin Dods design modelled on the cathedral at Albi in France, St Brigid's replaced an 1877 stone church for what was then one of Brisbane's largest parishes. Its massive brick walls went up largely on the pennies of Irish immigrant families, it joined the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992, and it is regarded as Dods' finest surviving work.
The Broncos' home club on Fulcher Road, open since the team's first season.
Game-day households are hard on floors. Spilled drinks, boots, dogs and thirty years of Friday nights all end up in the rug, and a proper immersion wash at Yatala is what gets them out again.
The leagues club opened on 1 April 1988, the year the Broncos entered the national competition, and it has anchored Fulcher Road ever since, opposite the club's training ground on Gilbert Park. A six-month, six-million-dollar renovation relaunched it in October 2019 with new dining rooms, a courtyard and a wall of fame tracing the team's history.
A 1920s picture theatre that became Brisbane's best-loved skate rink, lost to fire in 2002.
The family reviving this site runs the drive-in a few minutes from our wash floor, so the connection is literal: Red Hill rugs are washed just up the road from the Skate Arena's next chapter.
The building opened around 1920 as the Red Hill Picture Pops theatre, spent the mid-sixties as the Teen City sound lounge where acts including the Bee Gees played, and from 1965 ran for decades as the Red Hill Skate Arena. Arson gutted it on Boxing Day 2002, and the shell stood on Enoggera Terrace for fifteen years until the Sourris family, picture-theatre operators who also run the Yatala Drive-In, bought the site in 2017 with plans to bring cinema back.

Red Hill wants the details
Can the driver really manage our staircase?
Stairs are the job description in Red Hill. The rug travels rolled, the driver carries it down to wherever the truck fits, and on delivery day it is carried back up the steps to your door.
Is immersion washing safe for a rug that is older than the house?
Done properly, yes. Age calls for gentler handling, not avoidance: we check dye stability and the foundation first, wash to suit, and dry the rug fully before it comes home. If a piece is too fragile to wash well, we say so instead of chancing it.
How is the price worked out for our rugs?
On size, fibre and condition, fixed by the driver at inspection before anything leaves the house. Pickup and return cost nothing, and rugs after the first on one booking are $20 off each.
We have family in Paddington. Can both houses book the one run?
Easily, and it is the smart way to do it. Red Hill, Paddington and Petrie Terrace share the inner west day, so two households can combine a booking and both benefit from the multi-rug discount.
When does the rug come back, and in what state?
Seven days as standard, completely dry and wrapped for the trip. Express in two days is possible at added cost. If anything seems off, raise it within 48 hours of delivery and we repeat the wash for nothing.
Two kids, one dog, one cottage rug. Does urine odour ever really leave wool?
It does when the source leaves. Urine soaks through to the rug's foundation, so sprays and surface cleans only quieten it until the next humid week. Immersion washing at Yatala dissolves the residue where it sits and rinses it out, and if dye damage has already happened, we tell you at the door.
