One firm figure at the cottage door
Petrie Terrace runs quality over quantity, and so does the quote. The driver inspects the piece at your door, prices it firmly on size, fibre and condition, and gives an honest opinion on whether the work is worth it for that rug, that year.

I booked from Petrie Terrace because the wool rug was overdue. The pet stains were the main worry, and they flushed the smell out instead of just masking it.

Rug Washing Petrie Terrace at Cottage Scale
Cottages from before Queensland existed
Petrie Terrace is one of Brisbane's smallest and oldest suburbs, a narrow wedge of ridge first sold off in the mid-1840s after the penal settlement closed. The housing is nineteenth-century at heart: attached and detached workers cottages, narrow timber terraces and small colonial homes shoulder to shoulder on streets built before cars. Renovations squeeze modern living into heritage footprints, and with small floor plans every rug matters, usually one good wool or Persian piece per room doing daily duty on old timber boards.
Rooms that never see direct sun keep their rugs permanently shaded.
Small rooms hold their air, and their damp
The ridge catches breeze, but small attached cottages with limited airflow hold humidity indoors. Moisture and fine city dust accumulate quietly in the pile. The immersion wash at Yatala flushes the fibre clean, and the drying rooms finish what a shaded cottage cannot, so nothing damp ever comes back through your front door.
Built to serve this hill, still serving it
The strip that has fed this hill since 1864 and the barracks that anchored it from the same year both prove the local rule: what is maintained, lasts. A cottage rug works harder than a mansion's, because there is no spare room to retire it to and no second piece to rotate in. So the wash has to be right the first time: inspected honestly at the door, immersion washed at Yatala, returned completely dry because a two-bedroom cottage has nowhere to air a damp rug. That discipline is the whole service, and it suits these streets.

Where your rug is washed
Three institutions on one small hill
A 160-year-old street, a police depot turned cinema and the barracks that built the trade.
The 1864-born strip that has fed and watered this hill for 160 years.
A street that has served the same hill since 1864 understands repeat business. So do we: most of our inner west work is returning clients who first trusted us with a single rug.
The first Caxton Hotel went up on the street's northern side in 1864, the Terrace Hotel followed in 1868, and Caxton Street has been Petrie Terrace's commercial heart ever since. Today it is one of Brisbane's best-known entertainment strips, packed on event nights and busy with restaurants the rest of the week, still trading on corners it has held since the 1860s.
The former police depot on Petrie Terrace, rebuilt in 2008 as a cinema and dining precinct.
The Barracks kept its bones and changed its purpose. We do the same for rugs: the structure stays, decades of soil leave, and the piece goes back to work.
This site held the Brisbane Gaol from 1860 until 1883, then the Queensland Police Depot from 1885, and its heritage-listed buildings stack more than a century of institutional history onto one corner. In 2007 and 2008 the whole precinct was redeveloped as The Barracks, where the old brick and stone now house a cinema, restaurants and shops.
The army barracks established on the hill in 1864, designed from the War Office in London.
Barracks kit was maintained on inspection standards, and that is roughly how we treat rugs: inspect honestly, wash thoroughly at Yatala, return dry and ready for duty.
Victoria Barracks was laid out from 1864 with designs sent from the War Office, and its parade grounds and stone buildings gave Petrie Terrace's shops and hotels their steadiest customers for a century. The heritage-listed precinct still overlooks the suburb it helped build.

Terrace questions
There is nowhere to park on our street. Does that matter?
Not to us. The driver stops where the truck fits, walks to your door and carries the rolled rug back. It is how the whole suburb gets serviced, and it costs nothing extra.
Our cottage is tiny. Do we need to store the rug while it is away?
No, that is the convenience of the service: the rug is simply gone for the week it is being washed and dried, then comes back finished. Nothing damp, nothing draped over furniture.
What do you charge on Petrie Terrace?
The quote belongs to the rug: size, fibre and condition set it, the driver fixes it at inspection, and pickup and redelivery are included. A second rug in the same booking is $20 off, and so is every one after it.
Can you also collect from Paddington or Red Hill the same day?
Yes, all three share the inner west run. Households splitting rugs between a cottage here and a family house nearby often book them together.
What is the wash timeline, and what is covered?
Seven days as standard, 48 hours on the paid express. Every wash is backed the same way: flag it within 48 hours of the return and the rug is rewashed at no charge.
In a small cottage, one urine accident owns the whole room. What removes it?
Removal at the source, nothing less. In a compact space the smell has nowhere to dilute, and the residue causing it lives down in the foundation, far past where sprays penetrate. The immersion wash at Yatala washes the foundation through, the controlled dry finishes the job, and the room goes back to being yours. If the accident has moved dye on an older piece, the assessment says so honestly first.
