An old wool rug deserves a straight answer
Plenty of southern Sunshine Coast rugs have fifty years of family in them. Tell us the age, the fibre if you know it, and what worries you, and we will say plainly whether a wash is worth it before a dollar is spent.

Rug washing from Kings Beach to Buddina
Two climates in one town
Caloundra wears two climates at once. The headland beaches at Kings, Shelly, Moffat and Dicky face open surf and load their beach houses with salt and fine sand, while around the corner Golden Beach and Pelican Waters sit on the flat water of Pumicestone Passage, where there is less spray but more standing humidity. Wool suffers differently in each: sand grinds at the pile in the surf suburbs, and damp gathers under sideboards on the passage side.
After a couple of humid summers the colour has dulled and a musty note has crept in.
Rugs that outlast the sofas
The rugs themselves are often the best part of the house. Golden Beach and Pelican Waters are downsizer territory, and a good wool rug there has usually outlasted three sofas; washed properly it will outlast three more. Owners here research before they buy anything, which suits us: 29 years of hand washing, IICRC certification, and an honest assessment of whether an old rug justifies the work, delivered before a dollar is spent.
The Kawana strip and the growth estates
Up the strip through Wurtulla, Warana and Bokarina the beach houses run families and pets across their rugs daily, Minyama's deepwater canals hold some of the coast's most expensive homes, and the growth estates at Caloundra West, Bells Creek and Meridan Plains are filling with new wool-blends earning their first stains. Different rugs, same routine: fibre identified, dyes checked, method matched.
A dedicated run, planned properly
We are honest about the distance: Caloundra is a dedicated run for us, not a quick trip, and that is exactly why it works. Sunshine Coast pickups happen on set days, the driver covers Caloundra and Kawana in one loop, the rug is hand washed and dried in a controlled room at our Yatala facility, and it comes back finished on the next run. No wet rug ever dries in a humid coastal room, and the free re-wash guarantee stands behind the result.
That is the southern loop, headland to river mouth. Every rug is inspected and quoted first, and pickup and delivery stay free on the scheduled runs.

Where your rug is washed
Six places that anchor the southern coast
Lighthouses, a shipwreck beach and the passage boardwalk, all on our southern Sunshine Coast loop.
Caloundra's main patrolled beach, with a free 25 metre saltwater pool on the rocks.
The units and beach houses above Kings Beach carry sand and salt into their rugs every week of the year, and they sit at the first stop of our Caloundra loop.

Kings Beach is patrolled year round and built for families: a free 25 metre saltwater swimming pool under shade sails on the foreshore rocks, a water-play fountain, rock pools, and an amphitheatre lawn behind the sand that hosts events through summer. It is the beach the rest of Caloundra measures itself against.
The calm-water beach where Caloundra faces Bribie Island across the passage.
Bulcock and Golden Beach homes are long-held and carefully kept, and their owners tend to ask exactly the right questions about how a wool rug should be washed. We like those conversations.

Bulcock Beach looks south across the mouth of Pumicestone Passage to the northern tip of Bribie Island, and the boardwalk that hugs the shoreline from the beach around the rocky point is Caloundra's best short walk, tide moving one way in the morning and back in the afternoon. The cafe strip across the road keeps it busy year round, and the water inside the passage is flat enough for toddlers.
The only Australian beach named after a shipwreck, the SS Dicky, ashore here since 1893.
Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach and Battery Hill book onto the same morning of our Caloundra loop, three suburbs in fifteen minutes for the driver.

The iron steamer SS Dicky was driven ashore in a cyclone on 4 February 1893, resisted every attempt to refloat her, and stayed put so long the beach took her name. The rusting hull became the region's most photographed landmark until 2015, when the council removed the last exposed sections for safety, keeping pieces for an interpretive display in the beachside precinct. The surf club and cafe strip keep the beach itself busy.
The headland and lighthouse at the Mooloolah River mouth, at the top of Kawana Beach.
Buddina and Minyama surround the point, and their canal and beachfront homes hold the best rugs on the Kawana strip; this is the northern end of our southern loop.

Point Cartwright's concrete lighthouse went up in 1979, the latest in a line of lights that have guided shipping toward Moreton Bay from this coast since 1896, and its 32 metre tower shares the headland with a reservoir painted in a huge ocean mural. Below, La Balsa Park runs along the Mooloolah River entrance, and the two kilometre loop over the headland gives views from Mount Coolum to the length of Kawana Beach.
The swimmable lake behind the beach, edged by 50 hectares of protected wallum heath.
Currimundi, Aroona and Wurtulla family homes live between lake and surf, and lake-water damp in a rug is a job we know well: washed, deodorised, dried flat.

Currimundi Lake opens and closes to the sea across the beach, and its calm end is one of the most used family swimming spots between Caloundra and Kawana. The conservation park on its northern shore protects 50 hectares of wallum heathland, a remnant of the plant community that once covered this coast, and is named for Kathleen McArthur, the Caloundra artist and conservationist who co-founded the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland in 1962 and fought to keep the wallum wild.
Two generations of lighthouse standing together on Canberra Terrace since 1896 and 1968.
The streets around the lighthouses hold Caloundra's oldest homes and oldest rugs, and honest assessment matters most on rugs with fifty years of family history in them.

The old Caloundra light was designed by colonial architect F.D.G. Stanley and built in 1896, timber-framed and clad in corrugated iron, a construction unique to Queensland lighthouses and now the oldest surviving building in Caloundra. Its 1968 replacement stands beside it. The old tower spent decades relocated at Golden Beach before being returned to its original site, and the pair joined the Queensland Heritage Register in 2010. Volunteers open them to visitors twice a month.

Southern Sunshine Coast rug questions, answered straight
Which southern Sunshine Coast suburbs do you collect from?
The whole southern end: Caloundra, Kings Beach, Shelly Beach, Moffat Beach, Dicky Beach, Battery Hill, Currimundi, Aroona, Golden Beach, Pelican Waters, Caloundra West, Little Mountain, Meridan Plains, Bells Creek, and the Kawana strip through Wurtulla, Warana, Bokarina, Birtinya, Buddina and Minyama. One loop, set run days, free pickup.
Is my thirty year old wool rug worth washing?
Usually yes, and we will tell you plainly if it is not. Older wool rugs are generally better made than newer ones, and a proper hand wash brings back colour and body. The assessment and quote come before any commitment.
The dog had an accident on the rug and the smell keeps coming back. Why?
Because the urine is still in the rug's foundation. Sprays clean the surface, humidity re-releases what sits deeper, and the cycle repeats every warm week. Enzyme treatment digests the source and a full immersion wash removes it, which ends the cycle for good.
Our passage-side house feels damp all summer. What does that do to rugs?
Standing humidity settles into wool at floor level, especially under furniture where air never moves. The wool stays faintly moist, colour dulls, and mould can start unseen. A full wash and controlled drying resets the rug completely.
The colours look flat after years by the water. Fading or dirt?
Often it is a film of grime and salt rather than true fading, and a wash makes a visible difference. Genuine sun fading is permanent, and we will show you which one you have at inspection, before you decide anything.
Do you really offer free pickup from Caloundra?
Yes. Pickup and delivery are free on scheduled Sunshine Coast runs, and booking onto the set run day is what makes it work. Every additional rug collected with it is $20 off.
