Aroona was formally named in 1988, from a 1973 reference work that recorded the word as meaning flowing water.
A name looked up carefully rather than assumed casually says something about how deliberately this pocket of Caloundra was planned. We bring the same care to reading a rug before touching it.
The suburb's name comes from Sydney Endacott's Aboriginal Words and Place Names, published in Melbourne in 1973, which recorded aroona as meaning flowing water, sometimes rendered locally as place of refreshing. The name was formally gazetted in 1988, well after the first houses in the area had already gone up. That order matters: this was a naming decision made for a suburb rather than a name that grew out of the ground it describes, and it is one of the few facts about Aroona that can be dated precisely.
