A chemist who bought a headland for holidays
James Campbell Moffat, a Brisbane chemist, acquired twenty acres of coastal land at Caloundra on 18 August 1882, running from Moffat Head north to William Street at what is now the Dicky Beach boundary. He built a holiday house on it the following year, in 1883, when Caloundra itself held fewer than twenty families, and the suburb has carried his name ever since. In 1888 the Sea Glint guesthouse opened near William and Derby Streets, drawing visitors including the colonial premier Sir Thomas McIllwraith as a regular guest. The suburb today covers one point four square kilometres wrapped around its own headland, two point one kilometres northeast of Caloundra's CBD, predominantly residential with a small industrial estate at its western end, and it held 2,691 residents at the 2021 census against 2,553 in 2016.
A house here gets taken back to the frame and rebuilt properly. We think a rug deserves the same treatment.
The suburb that renovates instead of demolishing
Moffat Beach has become the renovator's suburb on this stretch of coast. Older timber beach houses and postwar cottages get reworked room by room rather than pushed over, which is a slower and considerably more particular way of doing things, and it changes what arrives in our van. Good rugs go back into these old timber rooms as each stage is finished, and a rug that has sat through a full strip-out usually needs the same attention the floorboards around it have just had. There is a second pattern too. A renovator frequently inherits a rug with the house and has no history for it at all, no idea of age, origin or what has already been done to it. That is a job for testing rather than assumption, and it is the reason the assessment happens before anything is quoted rather than after the piece is already in the water.
Salt arriving from two directions
Wrapping around a headland means this suburb takes salt from two sides rather than one, off the open beach to the north and off the point break south of Moffat Head. Older houses make that worse. Homes built well before modern sealing and ventilation let salt-laden air move through wall cavities and underfloor spaces freely, and it settles into wool that sits above it. The result is a rug carrying a decade or more of accumulated salt low in the foundation, dulling colour steadily rather than staining it, so nobody notices until a clean piece is set beside it. Renovation stirs all of that up and adds building dust on top. Renovation marks and living marks behave differently and get treated differently. Cured paint and adhesive need mechanical and solvent work at the fibre, while an old household spill is a chemistry problem. Rolled storage is what turns this from a small problem into a large one. A rug put away damp with urine still in the backing spends months in the dark doing exactly what you would expect. Machine-made synthetics were made for this method and are back in service the same afternoon, which is what a half-finished house needs from a floor covering. Rolled, stored and slightly damp is the worst combination there is, and a renovation produces it constantly. Treated water removes the growth and the residue it has been living on, the rinse clears the rest, and the drying room takes out the moisture that started it. Rug Moth Treatment
Wool is eaten while it is out of sight, and a rug rolled in a spare room for six months is completely out of sight.
This is the single most common casualty of a long renovation. A rolled rug is undisturbed, often warm, and frequently forgotten about entirely, which is everything the grubs need to work through a season uninterrupted. A treated bath resolves eggs, larvae and adults in one pass, everything left behind is rinsed out, and the damage can finally be measured properly.

The last decision in the sequence is whether to add a clear finish, and wool going into a room just completed is where it belongs.

Brisbane chemist James Campbell Moffat bought twenty acres of this coastline on 18 August 1882 and built his own holiday house on it the next year.

Thirteen passengers from the wrecked steamer Queen of the Colonies came ashore on this stretch of coast in 1863.

In 1863, thirteen passengers from the shipwrecked Queen of the Colonies made it ashore on this stretch of coast, decades before Moffat Beach existed as a named place or a suburb. A concrete memorial to the survivors was erected in 1963, a hundred years on, and it still stands as one of the suburb's few formal historical markers, a quiet reminder of how exposed this coastline has always been to the open sea.
Norfolk pines believed to have been planted around 1928 still line Moffat Beach Park, above a headland walk and an annual surfing classic.
A foreshore that has looked much the same since the 1920s now sits above streets full of carefully renovated timber homes, and the rugs going back into those finished rooms deserve a wash built to last as long.

We are mid-renovation. When should the rug actually be collected?
After the dusty work and before the room is finished. Sanding, cutting and plastering put fine material into the air that settles into wool for days afterwards, so washing before that is money wasted. Once the messy trades are done, the rug can go, and it comes back ready for a room that is ready for it.
How is the quote worked out here?
Off the rug and nothing else. Its size, its construction, the state of its foundation and what it has collected decide the number. The driver gives it once the piece has been seen, both legs of the trip are already in it, and nothing else is added at the end of the job.
The rug came with the house and we know nothing about it. Can you help?
Yes, and it is a common question in this suburb. We can generally establish construction, fibre and roughly how it was made, along with what condition the foundation is in. We will not put a value on it, because that is an appraiser's job, but you will get a straight account of what a wash can and cannot bring back.
The dog urinated on a rug we then rolled up and stored. Is it recoverable?
Usually, though rolled storage is the worst thing that can happen to it. Urine sits in the backing and keeps working in the dark, so by the time the rug is unrolled the smell has spread right through the roll. A full bath takes the residue out of the structure, enzymes deal with what caused it, and if the dye has been harmed for good you hear that at the assessment.

Yes, all three sit either side of this headland on the same loop, along with Caloundra and Battery Hill. Two houses in the same street can send rugs on one collection if it suits, and each rug after the first is $20 off.
