A considered quote for a considered rug
You chose that rug against three shortlisted others, so we treat the wash with the same care. Construction and dyes are assessed first, the price is confirmed before work starts, and anything fragile is discussed with you directly.

This was one of those jobs I kept delaying, mostly because the shaggy rug was too awkward to fit in the car. Pickup and delivery were included, and it came back ready for the lounge.

Rug Washing Hawthorne: the River Bend's Good Rooms
A tightly held river pocket
Hawthorne is one of Brisbane's most tightly held pockets, a small river bend of renovated Queenslanders, interwar timber homes and serious new builds between Bulimba and Balmoral, with the CityCat gliding past its wharf since 1925.
Rugs bought to a plan
The renovations here nearly always end the same way: polished boards, considered lighting, and a significant rug doing the quiet work of making the room. Designer wool, silk blends, pieces bought to a plan rather than on a whim.
Rugs like that should not meet a hire machine.
What the river adds, the bath removes
Ours are washed by hand at the Yatala facility, dye-tested first, immersed, rinsed and dried under controlled airflow, an IICRC-certified process we have refined over 29 years. It matters here more than most suburbs because the river keeps Hawthorne's air damp on still mornings, and wool quietly banks that moisture until a faint mustiness announces it in late summer. A proper wash clears the moisture history along with the grit the timber floors feed into the backing.

Three fixtures of Hawthorne life
Between the cinema, the park and the wharf, our driver sees the whole suburb.
The Hawthorne Road picture theatre, screening since the 1940s.
The streets behind the cinema hold some of the best-furnished Queenslanders on our route, and their owners are the reason our hand-wash bookings from Hawthorne rarely slow down.
It opened as a single-screen house seating around 750, and screen one still carries one of the biggest curved screens in Brisbane. Cineplex added the Deluxe complex in April 2016, recliners and a dining lounge alongside the old auditorium that generations of eastern-suburbs kids grew up inside.
The suburb's sporting green on Riding Road, home to the Livvi's Place all-abilities playground.
Park afternoons travel home on small shoes and paws, and the family rugs that absorb them are steady cargo on our Hawthorne pickups.
The park carries the ovals, a dog off-leash area and bikeway loops, but its best-known corner is Livvi's Place, a fully fenced playground built with the Touched by Olivia Foundation where sandpits, water play and inclusive equipment let children of every ability play side by side.
The CityCat stop that has connected this bend of the river to town since 1925.
Plenty of Hawthorne clients commute by CityCat and simply leave the rolled rug with whoever is home, and our driver sorts the handover in a minute.
Brisbane City Council opened the wharf in 1925 and it has worked the bend ever since, returning in June 2015 after a full terminal rebuild. The pocket park beside it looks straight across to the Teneriffe woolstores, which makes it one of the better places in Brisbane to wait for a boat.

What Hawthorne owners want to know
My rug was expensive. How do I know it is safe with you?
Ask us anything before you commit; that is what the assessment is for. We are IICRC certified, we have washed fine rugs for 29 years, and every delicate piece is dye-tested and handled by hand at our own Yatala facility, not subcontracted anywhere.
Can you wash silk or silk-blend rugs?
Yes, with adjusted handling. Silk demands cooler water, gentler agitation and careful drying, all of which is standard practice on our wash floor. We confirm fibre content during inspection and set the method accordingly.
What does collection cost in Hawthorne?
Nothing in either direction. The driver collects the rolled rug on the river-run morning and returns it dry about 7 days later.
Do you collect from Bulimba and Balmoral on the same day?
The same morning, usually. Norman Park and Morningside ride that run too, so combining rugs with family nearby is easy, and the extra rugs in one collection are $20 off apiece.
The rug smells slightly musty in February. Is that mould?
Not necessarily. Riverside humidity soaks into wool overnight and a faint mustiness is often just banked moisture, which an immersion wash and controlled dry removes completely. If we find actual mould during inspection, you hear about it before we proceed.
Our dog marked the designer rug. Will the treatment change how it looks?
No. We remove urine by flushing the foundation in a full immersion wash, which is gentler on the face of the rug than any surface scrubbing. Dyes are tested first, and if an old accident has already touched the colour we show you exactly where before washing.
