One firm figure for the hillside's good wool
Sailors maintain things before they fail, and they like their numbers exact. Your rug is examined, a single figure is set, and the work honours it.

Rug washing Manly, done the sailor's way
Timber streets that climb away from the water
Manly stacks itself up the hill behind the harbour, street over street of Queenslanders and post-war timber homes angled for a glimpse of the masts. Two decades of steady renovation have polished the housing stock without changing its bones: timber floors are still the default, verandahs still catch the afternoon, and the living room rug is often the best thing in the house after the view. Down near the village, apartments and townhouses add a newer kind of household to the mix. What every one of them shares is the air. This suburb faces the weather head on, and everything soft inside a Manly home lives with what the bay sends up the hill. The village end adds its own rhythm: Sunday markets, ferry mornings and cafe crowds, and the apartments above them keep smaller wool pieces and flatweaves that ride the same collection day as the hillside's big rugs. Between the two, Manly hands us more variety in a street than most suburbs manage in a postcode.
Salt never vacuums out of wool. It washes out completely, or it stays.
What the onshore breeze leaves behind
Every onshore day carries a little salt up these streets, and wool collects it the way it collects everything. Salt is the patient kind of problem: it keeps drawing moisture into the fibre long after the wind has dropped, so the pile slowly flattens, the colours lose their light, and a faint mustiness moves in that no surface treatment can evict. A rug can look respectable and still be carrying years of the bay in its base. The immersion wash at our Yatala facility dissolves that load and rinses it away entirely, and because drying happens under control at the facility, the rug comes back carrying none of the moisture the salt kept inviting in.
A suburb that respects things done properly
The yacht squadron has been racing off Manly since 1885, and you do not keep boats alive on Moreton Bay for that long without believing in maintenance. The suburb thinks the same way about its houses, its timber floors and its good rugs, which is why we get on well here. Our side of the bargain has not changed in 29 years: assessment first and honestly, a true hand wash at our own facility rather than a machine line, and a straight answer when a rug does not justify the cost. Manly households tend to book the same rug in on a rhythm, usually timed around the sailing season, and the driver knows the hill well. The booking is form-first, which suits a suburb that plans its weekends around wind forecasts.

Three Manly institutions that explain the place
A sailing club, a prison island and a Sunday market, all reached from the same shoreline.
Sailing off Manly since 1885, with a royal warrant and a habit of firsts.
Sailing households treat maintenance as a calendar item, boat and home alike. Around the squadron streets, the same rug tends to come to us on a schedule, usually timed to the season.
The squadron traces its racing to 1885 and picked up its royal title early last century. In 1975 it became the first sailing club in Australia to open membership to women, and its Manly base remains one of the country's great sailing addresses, sending club fleets out onto Moreton Bay most weekends of the year.
Queensland's first penal settlement, a ferry ride off Manly since the 1860s.
Manly lives with more history at its doorstep than most of Brisbane, and its homes show it. The inherited wool pieces we collect from these streets are washed by hand with that history in mind.
St Helena ran as the colony's prison island from 1867 to 1932, and the national park now guards what remains: stockade ruins, warder quarters, the sugar mill, a lime kiln and the state's first tramway. Guided tours still leave from Manly, which has served as the island's mainland doorstep for well over a century.
Every Sunday at the harbour village since 1991, the city's longest-running creative market.
Market people notice craft, and ours is a craft trade: rugs washed by hand at our own Yatala facility for 29 years, with nothing rushed and nothing outsourced.
Set up in late 1991, the Creative Markets have held the same harbourside spot every Sunday for more than three decades, the longest unbroken run of any creative market in Brisbane. The Jan Powers Farmers Markets join on the third Saturday of each month, giving the village end of Manly its reliable weekend crowds.

Manly rug questions, answered straight
Does salt air genuinely damage a wool rug?
It does, slowly and invisibly. Salt keeps pulling moisture into the fibre, which flattens pile, dulls colour and feeds a musty note in the base. Vacuuming cannot touch it because salt only leaves in water. A full immersion wash removes it entirely, and the rug comes back brighter than most owners expect.
Our dog's urine got into the wool rug near the back door. Is the smell fixable for good?
Yes, because we treat the layer the accident actually reached. The immersion bath flushes the foundation clean, an enzyme treatment breaks down the residue where it settled, and a total dry removes the moisture that would otherwise switch the smell back on come summer.
Do you collect from Wynnum and Lota on the same trip as Manly?
We do, one bayside day covers all three. Neighbours and family often book together to share the run, and every rug after a booking's first gets $20 off, which makes the shared vanload worthwhile.
How does pickup work on the steeper streets?
The same as anywhere: the driver comes to your door, collects the rug rolled, and loads it in the van. Book through the form, note any access quirks, and the pickup window firms up when the bayside day's schedule locks.
This rug has been ours for thirty-odd years. Is washing still wise?
That is our favourite kind of work. The rug is assessed first, honestly, including whether washing is wise for its condition. Old wool gets gentle chemistry, hand work and slow drying, and if a piece needs a specialist path we say so before anything begins.
Can a Manly rug come back sooner than the usual week?
For immovable dates there is the 48-hour express, at additional cost. The standard cycle runs about 7 days door to door, and both finish the same way: the rug completely dry and ready for the floor.
