The 60-hectare saleyards that made Cannon Hill Brisbane's cattle capital for 60 years.
The post-war streets built for saleyards workers are now our Cannon Hill bread and butter, family homes whose renovated floors carry rugs that work hard and get washed rarely.
The Cannon Hill Saleyards opened in 1931 to serve the neighbouring abattoirs, and more than 47 million head of livestock passed through before they closed in 1991. Cattle were once droved along Wynnum, Logan and Creek Roads to reach them, drawn from as far as the Northern Territory and South Australia, and the adjoining works began in 1913 as Swifts Meat Works before becoming the State-run Brisbane Abattoir in 1930. The land has since been redeveloped, but the saleyards are still how older Brisbane remembers the suburb.

Parkland walks mean wet dogs and creek-flat mud, and the rugs those dogs sleep on are collected from the streets beside Minnippi on our weekly eastern run.
Minnippi Parklands runs along Bulimba Creek through Cannon Hill, Tingalpa, Carina and Carindale, a chain of lagoons, bikeways and open space that has become the east side's weekend backyard. The name honours Tommy Minnippi, a local Jagera elder known as the king of the Tingalpa tribe, and the public golf course within the parklands sits on what was once the Cannon Hill council dump, one of Brisbane's better land-recycling stories.
The east side's big independent school, grown from 79 students in 1989 to around 1,350 today.
