A price set by the piece, not by the postcode
A CBD rug is often the oldest thing in the room. The inspection settles what it is, what it needs and what it does not need, and the figure comes out of that. Once it is given, it holds. If the rug is past the point of being worth washing, we tell you that instead of quoting on it.

Rug washing Toowoomba City, for the households inside the grid
A clock that has kept the same time since 1900
Toowoomba City Hall stands at 541 Ruthven Street, designed by Willoughby Powell, built in 1900, and the first purpose built city hall in Queensland. Powell won the council's competition with an entry he titled Sincerity, which is a better name for a design brief than most. The proclamation of Toowoomba as a city happened in that building, it went onto the Queensland Heritage Register in October 1992, and the clock in the tower still runs on the original mechanism imported from England when the hall was new. A hundred and twenty five years of the same movement, serviced rather than replaced. That is a fair description of how we treat a rug that arrives at the wash floor with a century behind it. Nobody is trying to make it new. The job is to take out what has settled into it and give the thing another long stretch of use.
The clock in the tower was not replaced with something modern. It was looked after. That is the whole argument for washing a rug properly instead of buying a new one.
Two thousand three hundred people living inside the grid
Toowoomba City is bounded by Bridge Street to the north, Hume Street to the east, James Street to the south and West Street to the west, which is 2.7 square kilometres of shopfronts, offices and civic buildings with a resident population of 2,321 at the 2021 census, up from 2,088 five years earlier. Two thousand three hundred is a small number for a city centre and it gets stated as one. What it means in practice is that the rugs from this locality come out of upstairs flats, converted terraces and the handful of remaining CBD houses, and they skew old. Wool and Persian pieces that have followed a family through three addresses in the same city end up here. Toowoomba North State School on Mort Street and Holy Name Primary School on Bridge Street still serve the families who stayed, and the city library at 155 Herries Street holds the Robinson Collection, named for the first woman to serve as the city's mayor.
Seven hundred metres up, with the windows shut
Toowoomba runs four real seasons, which is unusual in Queensland, and the centre gets them the same as everywhere else in the city. Winter nights near zero and frost through July mean heaters run for months and windows stay closed from about May to September. Two things follow for a rug. The first is soot, fine and oily, which drifts down and works its way well below the surface of a wool pile where no vacuum reaches it. The second is moths, which want exactly what a sealed winter flat provides, meaning warmth, dry air and months without anyone moving the furniture. Both problems are solved the same way and neither is solved by surface cleaning. The rug goes into water, the water carries out what has settled, the moth treatment travels in that same water through every part of the weave, and the drying is done flat under conditions we set rather than whatever the weather is doing on the day.

A clock, a platform and a shopping centre that doubled
A civic core of 2.7 square kilometres that still has people living in it.
Toowoomba City Hall at 541 Ruthven Street was designed by Willoughby Powell and built in 1900, and the proclamation of Toowoomba as a city took place in that building.
A hundred and twenty five years of the same mechanism kept running instead of swapped out is the argument we make about a good rug, in a different material.
Powell took the council's design competition with an entry titled Sincerity. The two storey building went onto the Queensland Heritage Register in October 1992, and the clock in its tower still runs on the original 1900 mechanism imported from England rather than a modern replacement.
Toowoomba railway station on Russell Street opened in 1873 to a design by FDG Stanley and has been heritage listed since 1992, while Grand Central reached 90,000 square metres after its 2014 to 2017 rebuild.
Both sit on the loop our driver works when the city centre run is on, so a rug from a flat off Russell Street and one from a house off Herries Street go in the same van.
The Westlander still calls at the heritage platform on its run between Brisbane and Charleville. Grand Central is now the largest shopping centre on the Darling Downs, which puts nineteenth century railway architecture and modern retail scale a few streets apart inside one small locality.
Toowoomba City held 2,088 residents in 2016 and 2,321 in 2021, a genuine increase inside a 2.7 square kilometre locality that is mostly shops, offices and civic buildings.
Two thousand people is a small number for a CBD and we treat it as one. There is no pretending the centre is a suburb, and no rug here gets less attention for it.
Toowoomba North State School on Mort Street and Holy Name Primary School on Bridge Street serve the families who remain. The city library and the local history library both sit at 155 Herries Street, including the Robinson Collection, named for the city's first female mayor.

Toowoomba City questions, answered plainly
We are in a flat above a shop with no lift. Can you still collect?
Yes. Roll the rug and leave it inside the door, and the driver carries it down. A large wool piece is a two person job and we send two when the rug warrants it, which is arranged at an additional charge when you book rather than sprung on you at the door.
How is the price for a Toowoomba City rug worked out?
From the rug itself. Its construction, its size and the state it has got into produce one figure, and both driver trips are already inside that figure. Nothing is added after the inspection. A rug that is not worth washing is told so rather than quoted.
Our rug came down from a grandparent and has never been washed. Is that a problem?
It is the most common thing we see in this part of town. Age on its own is not the issue. What matters is whether the foundation is still sound, which we can establish in a few minutes, and whether the colours were fixed well enough to take water. Both get tested before anything is decided.
The dog has urinated on the rug in the hallway. Does that need the full wash?
Almost always, because urine passes through the wool and settles in the backing, and nothing applied to the surface reaches it there. Submersion flushes the source out of the foundation, enzymes deal with what remains, and controlled drying is what stops the smell returning on the next damp week.
Do you collect from East Toowoomba, Newtown and North Toowoomba as well?
All three are on the same city centre day, along with South Toowoomba, Harristown and Rangeville. Neighbours in the same building often send rugs together, which is worth doing because every rug after the first has $20 off.
How long is the rug away for?
About 7 days from collection to return. Where a deadline is genuinely fixed, 48 hour express exists and carries an extra charge. Raise it at the start, since the centre gets a scheduled day rather than a van on call.
