Rug washing Harlaxton, on ground that was once two estates
An explorer's house, then a governor's
Harlaxton House was built in the 1870s in stone for Francis Thomas Gregory, the explorer and politician, and probably takes its name from Harlaxton Manor near the Gregory family's English home in Nottinghamshire. The suburb then took its name from the house. What happened next is the part that says most about the place. Lord Lamington, Queensland's eighth Governor from 1896 to 1901, rented it, and had a railway stop built at Harlaxton for himself and his guests. Local tradition holds that the lamington cake may have been invented at the house during that tenancy, which is a story worth repeating with the qualification attached rather than without it. The house went onto the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
Every important building in this suburb has had at least three jobs. A rug that gets washed properly rather than replaced is the same idea on a smaller scale.
A manor, a college and a wartime hospital
Tyson Manor was built in stone and brick in stages between about 1880 and 1905, and took its name in 1902 when it passed to Tyson Donnelly, who named it for his pastoral relative, the millionaire grazier known as Jimmy Tyson. Part of the property was later given over as public parkland. The remainder became Downlands College in 1931, and from 1942 to 1943 the college served as the 117th General Hospital, Australian Army Medical Corps. Today the manor holds meeting rooms and a residence for the college's religious community, and it was heritage listed on 21 August 1992. That is four distinct working lives for one building inside a century, which is a fair description of the suburb around it as well: rural estate, then subdivision, then close residential streets, with the original structures still standing through all of it.
What a northern suburb does to wool
Harlaxton sits at the city's own elevation, which means genuinely cold mornings, heaters and fireplaces working from autumn through to spring, and houses that stay shut for months. Wood smoke is fine enough to settle right down into a pile rather than sitting on the surface of it, and by the end of a winter a rug in a heated room has taken up a season's worth without looking obviously dirty. The same closed, undisturbed rooms are where moths get their opportunity, particularly under furniture in the older houses that came with the subdivided estates. Both problems answer to the same thing, which is a full immersion wash with the moth treatment carried in the water, followed by a proper flat dry in a room where we control the conditions instead of hoping for a clear week. Rugs from this suburb come to us most often in September and October, once the heaters have been switched off and the furniture starts moving again.
Harlaxton, and where the rug actually goes
Directions from Harlaxton to our Yatala facility
No office of ours stands anywhere in Toowoomba. Harlaxton rugs are collected rolled from the door, washed by hand at the Yatala facility and delivered back, with the pickup window confirmed once the day's route is locked in.
A governor's rented house, a grazier's manor and a school of 120 years
Two heritage estates that became one ordinary residential suburb.
A stone residence built in the 1870s for the explorer and politician Francis Thomas Gregory, probably named for Harlaxton Manor near the family's home in Nottinghamshire, and the source of this suburb's name.
A suburb named for a house rather than a landform tells you the old estates set the street pattern, and old street patterns are where the good rugs still are.
Lord Lamington, Queensland's eighth Governor from 1896 to 1901, rented the house and had a railway stop built at Harlaxton for his own use and his guests. Local tradition holds the lamington cake may have been invented there during his tenancy, a claim worth stating as tradition. The house was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
A stone and brick residence built in stages from about 1880 to 1905, renamed in 1902 when it passed to Tyson Donnelly in honour of his relative, the millionaire grazier known as Jimmy Tyson.
A building kept in service through four different uses is the same argument we make about a good rug: adapt and maintain it rather than replace it.
Part of the estate was given as public parkland and the rest became Downlands College in 1931. From 1942 to 1943 the college served as the 117th General Hospital, Australian Army Medical Corps. The manor now holds meeting space and a residence for the college's religious community, and was heritage listed on 21 August 1992.
Harlaxton State School opened on 2 September 1901 and enrols around 130 students, while Downlands College, established 1 March 1931, now runs around 770 across primary and secondary years.
Steady suburbs suit a scheduled run. Harlaxton households know when the van is in the area, and several rugs from one street often travel together.
That gives the suburb more than 120 unbroken years of schooling and a steady residential population to go with it. The count rose from 2,547 in 2016 to 2,824 in 2021, which is growth by increments rather than by estate release.

Harlaxton questions, straight answers
Our house is one of the older ones and the rug may be as old. Where do we start?
Start by letting us see it. Age on its own does not decide anything; foundation strength and dye stability do, and both are readable once the rug is opened out under decent light. If it is sound, a proper bath will do more for it than anything else available. If it is fragile, we will say so and explain what we would do instead.
How is the price worked out?
From three things: the size of the piece, how it was made and the condition it is in now. The drive down the range and back is already accounted for, so there is no Toowoomba surcharge in the number. We quote after inspection and the figure holds.
The wood heater runs all winter. Should we be washing more often?
In a room with a heater, yes, a wash every couple of years is sensible. Smoke particulate is fine enough to sink into the base of the pile, where it dulls the colour steadily without ever looking like dirt. Most people are surprised by how much brighter a rug comes back once that has been rinsed out.
There is a spot where the dog has urinated repeatedly. Can that be dealt with?
It comes down to one question, and it is not the one owners usually ask. The pile is never the issue. Urine goes straight through it and gathers in the foundation, so what matters is whether the piece can safely be immersed. If it can, the bath empties that layer and an enzyme stage finishes off the odour. If a colour has already been harmed, you hear that from us first.
Do you pick up from North Toowoomba, Rockville and Mount Kynoch too?
North Toowoomba, Rockville and Mount Kynoch sit on the northern loop with this suburb, and Cranley and Newtown are on it as well. Neighbours often time their collections together, which is worth doing, because $20 comes off each rug after the first.
What is the turnaround?
Usually about 7 days from pickup to delivery. Where a date is tight, express handling inside 48 hours can be arranged for an extra charge. Toowoomba is collected on a fixed day, so name the deadline on your first call and the pickup gets built around it.
