A suburb that would not take the general name
The Range was what people called the whole stretch of settlement along the top of the Great Dividing Range, and Rangeville decided that would not do. It named itself specifically, and the same insistence shows up in the school. It opened on 1 July 1909 as The Range State School and was renamed Rangeville State School that December, six months later, which suggests somebody felt strongly about it. Mount Tabletop, known in the local Aboriginal language as Meewah, marks the eastern boundary of the locality. Today Rangeville covers 8.2 square kilometres with 8,668 residents at the 2021 census, up from 8,312 in 2016, at a density a little over a thousand people per square kilometre. That is a settled suburb, not a growth corridor, and the difference shows in what is on the floors.

St Joseph's College was established here by the Christian Brothers across 1955 and 1956 and teaches years 7 to 12 from James Street.
