Named for a state anniversary, not its own
Centenary Heights was named in 1960, and the centenary it marks is not the suburb's. It commemorates Queensland separating from New South Wales in 1859, a state-wide anniversary borrowed for a piece of ground that had no history of its own to point at yet. That is worth knowing because it tells you what this place is. It is not an old township that grew into the city, and it is not a pioneer name inherited from a run. It is a deliberate civic gesture from 1960, attached to land that filled up with houses over the following twenty years. Everything in the suburb dates from after that decision, which makes the housing stock unusually consistent for Toowoomba.
Nobody buys a house in this suburb for the address. They buy it for the catchment, and the rugs inside it get treated accordingly.

St Thomas More's Primary opened on 23 January 1961, Centenary Heights State High on 30 January 1968, Gabbinbar State School on 24 January 1972 and Martin Luther Primary on 24 January 1977. Four institutions inside 3.1 square kilometres is a remarkable concentration, and it has decided the suburb's character completely. Houses here are bought for catchments and sold for catchments, which means the same brick and timber homes cycle through family after family rather than filling with retirees. For rugs that has one obvious consequence and one less obvious one. The obvious one is wear: school shoes, sport bags, dinner in front of the television. The less obvious one is that a lot of good wool comes into these houses second hand, inherited from a grandparent's place, and gets treated as a floor covering rather than the thing it actually is. Both of those are ordinary situations rather than problems, and both are handled the same way, by finding out what the rug is before anyone commits to anything.
Cold mornings, closed rooms, four parks
At the city's elevation the winters here bite, and a suburb this densely built keeps its houses shut from May through August with heating running. That is the combination that puts wood smoke into wool and lets moths work undisturbed in the rooms nobody uses over the cold months. Then spring arrives, and Emmerson Park, Harwood Park, Horner Reserve Park and Ravenscourt Street Park fill up along with every garden in the suburb, and the pollen and the grass come inside on everybody's feet. It is a genuinely seasonal pattern and it repeats every year. The piece is put under, agitated by hand where it needs it and left alone where it does not, and the rinse keeps going while the water is still carrying anything at all. Pet Stain and Odour
A dog that sleeps in the same square metre every night, or a cat that has quietly picked one spot behind a lounge chair.
The problem is depth, not area. Urine runs straight through the pile and gathers in the foundation, where it stays and keeps releasing, which is why a hired machine improves things for a week and then does not. Submersion pulls the source back out of the backing, enzymes take apart what actually smells, and controlled drying stops it coming back with the next humid week.

Odour Removal
The cold months in a closed house, wood heaters running from May, and a rug that has quietly picked up everything in the air since Easter.
Smells are substances, not moods, and they live in the base of a pile where air does not move. That is why hanging a rug over a fence for a weekend does so little. Washing dissolves the hold and the rinse water removes the material entirely, and nothing scented goes back on, because covering a smell just gives you two of them.

Rug Spot Cleaning
A single fresh accident on a rug in good order can often be handled in the house instead of losing it for a week.
What ruins these is enthusiasm. Scrubbing at a small patch stands the wool up out of its lie and drags the edge of the mark outward at the same time, and the faint halo that results never really goes. We test first, work with very little pressure, comb the pile back down afterwards, and say straight out when only a full bath will finish it.

Rug Dry Cleaning
Low moisture work for older pieces whose colour was never properly fixed, and for backings that have gone dry and brittle with the years.
Some rugs simply cannot be wet, and the only way to know is to check rather than assume. A discreet test on the reverse tells us in seconds whether the colour is stable. Where it is not, we work with compound in careful sections, because a colour that has bled into its neighbour is not something anybody can undo afterwards.

Once the wash itself is done there is the option of a clear finish. In a house where dinner regularly happens on the floor, it earns its keep.
All it does is slow the sink. A spill stays up on the wool a bit longer before it reaches the knots, which in a house with children can be the whole difference. We are not going to claim more than that for it. It changes nothing about how the rug feels, sits or looks.

A suburb whose entire character was set by decisions made in one decade.
The suburb was named in 1960 to mark the centenary of Queensland's separation from New South Wales in 1859, an anniversary that has nothing to do with this particular piece of ground.
A suburb with a start date rather than a slow beginning has unusually consistent housing, which means unusually consistent rug problems, and we know what to expect before we arrive.
It grew quickly through the 1960s and 1970s as the city expanded southeast from the centre, so the name arrived before most of the houses did. That is the opposite of how most Toowoomba localities got their names, which came from runs, landholders and hotels that were already there.

With four kids in the house, is there any point washing the rug at all?
There is, and probably more than in a quiet house. Grit is what actually destroys a rug, because it works down into the base and cuts the fibres from underneath every time somebody walks over it. Washing removes that. The visible marks are the smaller half of the problem.
The dog has been urinating in the same spot behind the lounge. Can that be fixed?
Not by treating the top of it, which is generally what has already been tried. Repeated urine ends up well under the pile, in the backing, and a hired machine cannot get down that far. What does work is putting the whole rug under water so the source floats out of the foundation, then an enzyme stage aimed at the smell itself. Where a dye has been harmed we say so up front.
