First out of the centre, and briefly its own town
Newtown was the first area outside Toowoomba's city centre subdivided for residential purposes, in 1865, and it briefly operated as its own separate Town of Newtown between 1913 and 1917 before folding back into the wider city. Seven heritage-listed properties still stand through the suburb: Elphin, Gladstone House and Cottage, Toowoomba Maltings, Ascot House, Tor, Weetwood, and Oak Lodge and Spreydon. That is a genuine concentration of the city's nineteenth-century residential heritage inside five and a half square kilometres. What it means for us is that the housing stock here runs from the 1860s to the 1960s in the space of a few blocks, and the rugs do the same. An inherited Persian in one house, a machine-made lounge piece in the next, and a hall runner that has been down since the Whitlam government in the one after that.

Five school campuses, and what that does to a floor
St Mary's College opened in 1899, The Glennie School in 1908, Newtown State School in 1924 and St Ursula's College in 1931, alongside several special schools serving the wider city. That density of long-running schools, all founded inside a single generation of one another, gives Newtown a settled, family-oriented character quite distinct from the newer estate suburbs further out. School households are the hardest on floors and always have been. Bags dropped inside the front door, wet shoes in July, a decade of the same three metres of hall taking everything the family does. It concentrates wear into predictable places, which is useful, because the traffic lane and the fringes are the first things we look at and the middle of a rug almost always still looks fine long after the working parts have given up.

Clifford Park Racecourse has run since 1862, one of the district's oldest sporting venues, while Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre, opened in 1983, gives the suburb a modern retail hub. Population reached 10,039 by 2021, up from 9,596 in 2016, making Newtown one of the city's largest suburbs. Newtown questions, answered plainly
We are in one of the old houses. Does that change anything?
It changes the handling rather than the process. Older rugs in older houses generally want gentler chemistry and a slower dry, and the dye check gets done more carefully because older colours move more readily. What does not change is that everything is decided with the rug flat under light, not from a description over the phone.
How is the figure worked out?
The rug decides it. Construction, size and the condition it arrives in, with collection and return already carried inside the number rather than added at the end. It is given at inspection and it holds from there. Where we cannot improve a piece we say so at that point and there is nothing to pay.
The hall runner has taken a decade of school bags and wet shoes. Worth saving?
Usually, and hall runners out of this suburb are among the most improved pieces we handle. Concentrated traffic packs soil hard into the base, which flattens the colour without necessarily destroying the pile. Whether it is soil or genuine wear is obvious once the rug is open, and we tell you before starting.

Blot it, leave it, and ring. Everything people try next fails for the same reason: within a day the urine has settled against the backing, and every product on a supermarket shelf works on the face.
