One figure for a rug that predates its owners
Nothing is priced from a doorway or a photograph. The rug is unrolled at the facility, read properly, and given one number that stands for the whole job.

Rug washing East Toowoomba, on the Garden City's oldest streets
A suburb built around century-old schools
Toowoomba Grammar School opened here in 1877 and its heritage buildings still hold the eastern end of the suburb. Fairholme College followed in 1917, Toowoomba East State School in 1887, Holy Angels in 1918 and Toowoomba Anglican School later again, which is an unusual amount of schooling for four square kilometres. Francis Thomas Gregory, the explorer who built Harlaxton House north of here, chaired the Grammar board, and that is a fair sample of who was buying land in these streets in the 1870s and 1880s. It matters to us for one practical reason. Streets settled by that generation are streets where a good rug was bought once, properly, and then kept.
A rug that came with the house deserves to be told the truth about itself, including when the truth is that it does not need us.
Hoop pine boards and rugs nobody bought
The housing here is the city's oldest and grandest: big timber federation homes, deep verandahs, hoop pine floors and gardens that have been worked by three or four sets of hands. Whyembah and Fernside are both heritage listed and privately lived in, and there are dozens of houses on these blocks in the same class without a listing. What we see in them, over and over, is a rug the current owner did not choose. It came with a grandmother, or with the house, and nobody knows what it is. That is where the honest assessment earns its keep. We tell you what the piece actually is, what washing will and will not do for it, and where the money is better left in your pocket. The reverse case comes up here too, often enough that it is worth saying. Plenty of these houses hold a machine-made rug bought in the last decade that somebody has confidently described as an antique, and the useful thing is to say so early rather than after an invoice has been written.
Fires, frost and the closed-up months
This is the crest edge of the range, and the winters here are genuinely cold by Queensland standards. Houses get shut up, fires get lit, and both of those things end up in the wool. Smoke particulate settles into the pile, and rooms that stay closed and undisturbed through the cold months are exactly the conditions a moth larva wants. The pattern we see in East Toowoomba is seasonal and predictable: the damage happens between May and August in a room nobody uses, and it gets discovered in spring when the house is opened up again. A full immersion wash with moth treatment carried in the water resets both problems at once, and the controlled drying room finishes the job in a way a Toowoomba clothesline in July never could.

We have no premises in Toowoomba and we do not pretend to. Rugs are collected at the door in East Toowoomba, washed by hand at our Yatala facility and returned the same way, and the collection window is confirmed once the day's route is set.
A grammar school, two listed houses and a suburb still filling in
The oldest and most closely held residential ground in the city.
Toowoomba Grammar School opened in 1877, one of the district's oldest independent schools, and its heritage buildings still anchor the eastern end of the suburb.
Streets settled around schools of that vintage are where a wool or Persian rug tends to have been bought once and kept, which is precisely the piece we are set up to wash properly.
Francis Thomas Gregory, the explorer who later built Harlaxton House, served as chairman of the school's board, one of several threads tying the suburb's establishment-era figures together. Fairholme College arrived in 1917 and Toowoomba Anglican School later again, so education has shaped who lives on these blocks for close to 150 years.
Whyembah and Fernside are both heritage listed private residences standing among the suburb's federation streets, and neither is a museum piece: people live in them.
Big rooms and timber floors are where large wool rugs end up, and a house that has been continuously occupied for a century usually has one that has never been properly washed.
They are the visible end of a much larger stock. Dozens of houses across these blocks share the same era, the same big rooms and the same hoop pine floors without carrying a listing of their own, which is what gives East Toowoomba its character rather than any single landmark.
The population rose from 5,244 in 2016 to 5,953 in 2021, which puts 1,488 people on every square kilometre of a suburb that was considered built out decades ago.
Houses changing hands is when rugs get looked at properly for the first time in years, and it is a large part of why our Toowoomba run keeps coming back to these streets.
That density is among the highest in this part of Toowoomba and it comes from infill rather than new estates: subdivided garden blocks, renovated houses changing hands, and units on land that used to be one home's back yard.

East Toowoomba, asked and answered
The rug came with the house and we have no idea what it is. Can you tell us?
Usually, yes, and we will do it before anything is quoted. Construction, fibre, dye type and any earlier repairs are all readable once the piece is opened out under proper light. Sometimes the answer is that it is a valuable hand knotted piece worth washing carefully. Sometimes it is a machine-made rug worth very little, and we say that too.
What sets the price for a rug from these streets?
The rug decides it. Size, how it is constructed and the state it has reached are the three inputs, and the trip down the range and back is already counted inside the figure. We inspect first, name one number, and that number does not move afterwards. If washing will not repay what it costs, you get told that instead.
Our house has open fires. Is that doing damage to the rugs?
Slowly, yes. Smoke particulate works down into wool over a season and it dulls colour long before anyone notices a smell. It is not urgent, but a rug in a fireplace room genuinely benefits from a proper wash every few years, and the difference in the colour once it is rinsed out surprises most people.
The dog has been using one corner of a back room for months. Is it fixable?
Start from what is actually happening. An animal returning to one spot drives urine down through the wool and into the cotton foundation underneath, and that layer has never been reachable by anything applied from above. So the piece has to go under water, which lifts the source back out of the backing. An enzyme stage follows and takes the odour apart. Should the dye beneath have been weakened, you will know before anything begins.
Do you collect from Rangeville, Toowoomba City and North Toowoomba as well?
Yes to all three, and on the same day. Mount Lofty, Redwood and South Toowoomba come off that loop as well. Houses on these blocks rarely have only one rug, so it is worth gathering them up: there is $20 off each additional piece in a single collection.
How long are we without the rug?
About 7 days between collection and delivery in the normal course. A 48-hour express option exists at an additional charge if something is time critical. Because Toowoomba runs on a set day, telling us your deadline on the first call is what lets us build the pickup around it.
