Ferny Hills covers 10.2 square kilometres along Samford Road, 16.1 kilometres northwest of the city, with 8,726 residents at the 2021 census, and it is really two halves: leafy 1970s to 90s family streets to the east, and bushland to the west where the grid simply stops at the Samford Conservation Park boundary, part of which lies inside the suburb itself. The houses climb and curl over sloping blocks, brick and timber with decks facing the gums, runners on the stairs and big wool pieces on timber-floored lounges. Plenty of those rugs have been down since the kids were small, and the suburb's two primary schools, one of which opened in 1970 under the name Ferny Way before taking the suburb's name in 1973, have kept generations of small feet running across them. Ken Mander-Jones built a reproduction outback station in the middle of Ferny Hills and made it famous. The Australian Woolshed ran ram shows, shearing and working-dog demonstrations for 25 years, pouring billy tea for roughly 75,000 overseas visitors a year at its height. When it closed in 2006 the site became the Woolshed Grove residential estate, and its name still marks the spot on Samford Road.
The school that opened under one name and adopted the suburb's three years later.

When the first subdivisions filled, the new school opened on 27 January 1970 as Ferny Way State School, then took the name Ferny Hills State School in 1973 as the suburb's identity settled around it.
