A place named by people who worked it suits us well. Rug washing at Yatala is still manual work: hands, water and 29 years of knowing what each fibre will take.
In the 1860s, gold miners working this part of the range called the area their mountain camp, and the phrase outlasted them to become the locality's name. The peak itself went by Mount Daniel in the late 1800s before the miners' name won. The district later ran granite quarries, and Camp Mountain stone went into the foundations of Brisbane City Hall, so a piece of this mountain is quietly holding up the middle of the city.
North-facing slopes here helped the district top Queensland's banana trade in the 1920s.
Boom, blight and reinvention is the hill-country story, and durability is its lesson. A well-made wool rug survives decades the same way, with proper care through the rough patches.
By 1908 bananas dominated farming across this district, planted up every north-facing slope, and through 1926 and 1927 the district shipped more bananas than anywhere else in Queensland. Then bunchy top virus arrived and wiped the crops out inside a few seasons in the early 1930s. The plantations went back to bush and dairy, and today the only evidence is the occasional feral banana plant in a Camp Mountain gully.

Questions asked up the range
Our biggest rug is genuinely too heavy for one person. How does pickup work?
Roll it if you can and leave the rest to the driver, who handles big acreage pieces every week. If furniture is sitting on it, mention that on the form: on request, a two-person team can move it for an additional charge. Nothing about a large rug changes the process, only the space it takes in the van.
Does mountain fog really make a difference to a rug?
It does, slowly. Fog and damp nights keep interior humidity up, tree cover stops rooms airing, and the rug absorbs it all because wool is the most absorbent thing in the house. Over a year that shows up as a flat, faintly musty pile. A full wash with complete drying at our facility resets it.
We have a hand-knotted rug we are nervous about. How careful is the process?
Careful enough that we start by telling you what the rug is and whether washing is in its interest. Dyes are tested first, the wash is done by hand at Yatala, and anything fragile is flagged before work starts, not after. That honest assessment costs you nothing and binds you to nothing.
How often does your driver actually come up Camp Mountain?
On every hills run that has a booking here, which most weeks it does. Pickups batch onto that scheduled day with the Samford district, we confirm your window once the day is set, and standard turnaround is seven days. If a date is looming, there is a 48-hour express at additional cost.
Will paddock dust and dog hair actually come out, or just the surface dirt?
Both come out, because immersion washing works from the base of the pile upward. Dust and hair bind low in the fibre where vacuums stop reaching, and floating the rug in water releases them completely. It is the difference between a rug that looks cleaner and one that is clean.
Working dogs come inside on cold range nights, and the wool rug pays for it. Fixable?
Fixable. Urine, paddock mud and wet-coat smell all leave in the same immersion wash, because the bath removes them at their source instead of treating the surface. What cannot be promised is dye that acid has already altered, and the assessment names any such spot before the wash is booked. Everything else comes home neutral.
