Blackwood Street is Mitchelton's main street in the old sense: a compact strip of cafes, restaurants and local shops giving the suburb a genuine village centre. On the first Sunday of each month the Jan Powers Farmers Markets fill the street from Samford Road to the railway crossing, and the trading tradition runs deep: the Lee sisters opened a general store here in 1917, and their brother Alec later served as the district's postmaster.
Named for the estate Nicholas Mitchell called Mitchelton by 1875.
Homes on the old Mitchell estate are into their second century, and many of their rugs are decades old themselves. Hand washing is how both keep going.
The suburb carries the name of the Mitchell family, English settlers who took up land here in the 1850s. Nicholas Mitchell had named his estate Mitchelton by 1875, the first subdivisions followed in the 1890s, and the Oxford Park Estate of 1913 laid out 300 allotments that became the bones of today's street grid: a farm name that became a station name, then one of the northside's most wanted addresses.
Opened 1916 under one name, renamed Mitchelton State School in 1923.

Mitchelton State School opened on 9 October 1916 as Grovely State School, back when the district's names were still settling, and took its current name in 1923 as the suburb found its identity. For nine thousand residents, that is a remarkably complete set of schools.

Renovation dust has settled into everything. Does the rug need more than a vacuum?
Yes. Plaster and sanding dust are fine enough to sift straight through the pile to the foundation, where vacuums cannot reach and humidity cements them. An immersion wash takes the whole project back out of the fibre.
