Wellington Point wears its history in layers. Original timber villas and workers cottages cluster around the village strip, wide streets of 1970s to 90s brick fill the middle of the peninsula, and newer prestige builds line the waterfront esplanades. The whole place began as Gilbert Burnett's 1880s sugar and timber estate, and the streets he named for his daughters, Edith, Alice and Matilda, still run off the old strip near the station.

Whepstead was built in 1889 for Gilbert Burnett, the sawmill and sugar mill proprietor, to a design by architect Claude William Chambers with builder Patrick Horisk. First called Fernbourne, the two-storey timber house later served as the Bay View Private Hospital and joined the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Burnett himself was ruined when the 1880s boom burst, but his house outlasted the crash.

A commuter village since 1889 runs on reliability, and so does our round: the rolled rug leaves the front step on schedule and returns washed, seven days later, on schedule again.
The station opened in 1889 when the Cleveland line was extended through from Manly, two years after Burnett subdivided the surrounding land into village lots. The line was cut back in 1960 and the station sat closed until 26 July 1986, when it reopened as the interim terminus while the line was rebuilt to Cleveland. The strip beside it still works as the suburb's centre, cafes and shops standing in for the old stores.

Our rug came down through the family. Is washing it a risk?
Less of a risk than leaving decades of salt and grit grinding in the pile. We test dyes and inspect the foundation before choosing a method, and on the rare occasion a piece cannot take immersion safely, we explain why and lay out the alternatives.
How often should a bayside rug be washed?
There is no fixed rule. When the colour looks flat, the pile feels heavy or a musty note appears, the rug is asking. Some Wellington Point pieces reach us yearly, others after a decade, and the inspection is honest either way.
What does the service cost?
Each rug is priced individually on size, fibre and condition, with the figure settled at inspection and never revised afterwards. Pickup and redelivery on the peninsula cost nothing.

How long is a rug away, and what if we are not happy?
The standard cycle is 7 days, with a 48-hour express offered at extra cost. Once the rug is home, a 48-hour window covers any concern: mention it and the piece goes back through the full wash free of charge.
Urine on an inherited rug. Is it recoverable?
In most cases, yes, and inherited pieces deserve the attempt. Urine sits in the foundation of the rug where surface products never reach, and it keeps announcing itself in humid weather. Immersion dissolves the source and carries it out in the rinse. Where old accidents have already burnt dye, the inspection tells you honestly what washing can and cannot restore.
