A firm figure, and no invented certainty
Where something is knowable we will tell you plainly, and where it is not we will say that instead. The quote itself is firm: one figure taken from the rug at your door, unchanged at delivery, with nothing owed if the answer turns out to be that a wash is not worth it.

Rug washing Uki, the closest village to Wollumbin on our run
A name with two recorded origins, and we are keeping both
There are two documented explanations for the name Uki and neither has been settled. One holds that it comes from an Aboriginal word for a small water plant with a yellow flower and an edible root. The other holds that it is a colloquial contraction of UK1, the grade-one export mark once stamped on the district's best timber heading for the United Kingdom. Both are genuinely recorded, both are plausible, and choosing one to sound authoritative would be inventing something we do not know. So the page says two, and leaves it there. It is worth saying out loud because it is exactly the standard we apply to a rug: at the inspection you get told what the fibre and the foundation actually show, and where something cannot be determined you get told that instead of a confident guess.
Two recorded answers and no way to pick between them. Better to say so than to sound certain.
Old buildings, and a pub that came back
The village still has genuine working history standing in it. The Old Butter Factory and Sweetnam's Humpy remain from the timber and dairy years, and the Mount Warning Hotel, which burned down in February 2013, reopened in the middle of 2015 rather than being written off. Around the village are farmhouses and acreage on the caldera's inner slopes, and Clarrie Hall Dam sits about ten kilometres away with a long-standing reputation as one of the better fishing spots in the state. The population has eased from 765 at the 2011 census to 685 in 2021, which is a real decline of eighty people over a decade and we are not going to present it as anything else. What it means for our work is that most of the rugs here have been in the same houses a long time, which is generally good news for how they wash.
Closest to the cloud catcher, and it shows indoors
Of every locality on our Northern NSW run, Uki sits nearest to Wollumbin itself, the mountain at the centre of the whole caldera whose name is often translated as cloud catcher. Whatever the mountain gathers, this village lives underneath. In practical terms the air here holds moisture longer than anywhere else we collect from, and nothing indoors dries out completely between wet spells. A rug carries two things at once as a result: soil that has migrated down through the pile across years, and a base of damp that a dry-feeling surface conceals entirely. The smell reaches you first, weeks or months before there is a mark to point at. Both problems answer to the same treatment, and both come straight back if the drying afterwards is left to a valley that will not cooperate.

This listing marks out a service area rather than a building anyone calls at. It shows the ground we cover, a driver collects from your place, and Yatala does the washing.
Down the valley and north
The drive is on our side of the ledger. Uki is collected alongside Murwillumbah and Tyalgum, and the window is confirmed once that day is scheduled.
A name with two answers, a rebuilt pub, and a village easing back
Everything here is recorded somewhere. Where the record disagrees with itself, we say so.
The name Uki has two documented explanations: an Aboriginal word for a small water plant with a yellow flower and an edible root, or a contraction of UK1, the grade-one export mark once stamped on the district's best timber bound for the United Kingdom.
The same rule governs an inspection. You are told what the rug shows, and where something genuinely cannot be determined you are told that as well.
Both appear in the record and neither has been resolved, so rather than pick the better story this page carries both and leaves the question open.
The Old Butter Factory and Sweetnam's Humpy still stand from Uki's timber and dairy years, and the Mount Warning Hotel, destroyed by fire in February 2013, reopened in the middle of 2015.
Houses in a village with that instinct tend to hold rugs worth restoring rather than replacing, which is the work we are best at.
Rebuilding a country pub after a fire is not the default outcome anywhere, and it says something about how the village regards the things it already has.
The population eased from 765 at the 2011 census to 685 in 2021, a genuine decline of eighty people across the decade.
A smaller village does not get a smaller service. The inspection, the hand wash and the guarantee are identical wherever the rug comes from.
Clarrie Hall Dam, about ten kilometres away and long regarded as one of the state's better fishing destinations, still brings people through the district even as the resident count softens.

Uki questions, answered without guessing
Is the village far enough out to be a problem for you?
No. The deep valley leg runs through Uki on its scheduled day alongside Murwillumbah and Tyalgum, and the extra distance is not passed on. A single rug from a village house is an ordinary collection for that run.
What determines the price of a Uki rug?
The rug alone. Its construction, size, fibre and condition set the number between them, and where you live contributes nothing to it. The figure quoted at your door is the figure invoiced when the rug is delivered back.
The house is damp most of the year. Is washing even worth it?
It is, and this is the one place where drying matters more than washing. The rug leaves your house wet with the problem and comes back dry to the backing, which resets it completely. Keeping it that way is about airflow underneath rather than anything applied on top, and we will talk you through what actually helps.
There is a spot the dog keeps urinating on. Can that be reversed?
Usually, and the sooner the better. The urine has reached the foundation, well below anything applied to the surface, which is why it keeps coming back. A bath acts at that depth, enzymes break down what produces the smell, and if the dye underneath has gone we show you before we start rather than after.
Do you collect from Tyalgum, Byangum and Murwillumbah on the same trip?
All three, and Dungay and Crystal Creek as well. Village houses are close together here so a shared collection is straightforward, and the $20 off applies from the second rug onward.
It looks fine but the room smells musty. Should I do something now?
Yes, and now rather than later. Under this mountain the base of a rug can stay damp for weeks while the surface feels perfectly dry, so the smell is your first and only warning. Handled now it takes an ordinary wash. Handled next year it takes considerably more.
