One man, two place names, and a post office in a front room
Joshua Bray, an early European colonist, established the homestead here and gave the locality its name. In 1866 he became the district's first postmaster, running what was recorded as the Wollumben Post Office out of his own house, which is a fair description of how administration worked in the Tweed at that point. His name turns up again a few kilometres away: one of the documented theories behind the naming of Murwillumbah itself traces back to Bray, by way of a local tribal name written down as Moorwooloobah. Whether that theory or one of the others is correct is not settled, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What is clear is that a single figure from one small rural block is threaded through the naming of the largest town in the valley and the running of its first post office, which is a lot of reach for a locality that recorded one hundred and nine residents at the last census.

Three kilometres out, and what that does to a rug
Kynnumboon sits close enough to Murwillumbah that local accommodation is routinely listed as being two point four to three kilometres from town, which is close enough for daily errands and far enough to hold onto rural blocks and farmhouses. That combination produces a particular housing pattern: people who wanted the acreage without the isolation, generally staying put once they have it. The population has eased from one hundred and thirty four in 2016 to one hundred and nine in 2021, which is a genuine decline for a locality this small and worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. Long tenure means the rugs have long tenure too. What comes off these floors is usually wool that arrived with a previous decade, has been vacuumed conscientiously and washed never, and is now stiff in the hand with colour that has flattened out. Valley floor humidity is doing the work: it keeps the base of the pile from drying, and soil packs into a damp base rather than resting on top of it where it could be lifted.

Being three kilometres from a town does not help with any of the above, because the problem is the air rather than the distance from services. A wool rug on the Tweed valley floor will not dry through to its foundation in a reasonable window at any point in the humid half of the year. It will dry on its surface within a day and stay damp underneath for a fortnight, and that gap is where odour begins and growth follows. Our drying room is ninety five to ninety eight kilometres north, about an hour and a quarter through the valley and over the border, and it runs on settings rather than on the forecast. Valley air keeps this problem alive indefinitely, which is why it never simply fades. The material sits in the foundation, humidity keeps it chemically active, and each new incident builds on the previous one. Only a full bath gets down to where it is. There is no product that removes an odour without removing what causes it, whatever the label says. On the valley floor the cause is usually moisture that has been sitting in the base of a rug for weeks on end, which needs the rug in water to release and a controlled room to prevent. Rug Dry Cleaning
Low-moisture compound cleaning, for the pieces a person has judged unsafe to put into water.
This is a judgement call and it gets made by somebody who has seen the failure it prevents. Unstable dye and a foundation gone brittle both end badly in a bath and neither can be undone afterwards, so the reverse gets tested first. Where the answer is no, section work at low moisture follows instead, and the smaller result that comes with it is stated up front.

The name most likely comes from the Bundjalung language, with several different documented readings rather than one settled account: possibly kinnonboon, a type of root, possibly kingimbon, meaning rock, or possibly the Yugambeh dialect word guyahnambuhn, the place of possums.

Two different language sources offering three candidate meanings is the ordinary situation for place names through this part of the Tweed, and the record does not resolve it. Naming a favourite would be tidier and less accurate.

What does the name Kynnumboon mean?
There are three documented candidates and the record does not settle between them: kinnonboon, a type of root, kingimbon, meaning rock, and the Yugambeh word guyahnambuhn, the place of possums. We will give you all three rather than picking the one that sounds best.
The dog has been urinating on the same spot for years. Is it fixable?
Usually. What you are dealing with is a quantity of urine held in the foundation, topped up each time and kept chemically active by valley humidity. A full bath is the only thing that reaches it. The odour compounds are then broken apart, and a controlled dry stops the whole thing resuming.
