One figure at the door, and it stays put
Distance never enters the number. The driver reads the rug at your place, quotes once, and that figure is what you pay at delivery. If a piece is not worth washing you will be told plainly at the same visit, and the visit costs you nothing.

Rug washing Tyalgum, the furthest village on our valley run
Every September since 1991, without a gap
The Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music was founded in 1991 by the violinists Carmel Kaine and John Willison, and it has run every September since. Three decades and more of an annual event in a village of five hundred and twenty one people is not a small thing to organise, and the fact that it has not lapsed says more about the character of the place than any description of the scenery would. It is not the only long run here either. The Tyalgum Store opened in 1907 and is still a working local landmark, which puts it well past its hundred and tenth year of trading from the same village. Two commitments that nobody let drop, in a place small enough that letting them drop would have been the easy option.
Thirty odd Septembers and a store past its hundred and tenth year. Some things here just do not get dropped.
The furthest inland village we collect from
Tyalgum sits twenty six kilometres west of Murwillumbah on the Oxley River in the upper Tweed catchment, seventy kilometres from the Gold Coast and a hundred and thirty from Brisbane, which makes it the furthest inland of the hinterland villages we serve regularly, ahead of Uki, Burringbar and Stokers Siding. The housing is farmhouses and acreage rather than anything coastal, and the average age of forty six describes a settled community rather than a passing one. Those two facts together produce a particular kind of rug on a particular kind of floor: wool, bought once, laid on timber, walked over daily for a very long time by people who come indoors from outdoor work. Structurally those rugs are usually in far better shape than they look, and a bath is what proves it.
At the top of the catchment, where the air collects
Being at the head of the Tweed's upper catchment, well inside the caldera rim, means Tyalgum gets the region's defining condition in its most concentrated form. Moist air arrives and it stays, and while it stays nothing indoors reaches proper dryness at all. A rug in that pattern carries two loads simultaneously and they get mistaken for one another constantly. There is soil, which has worked down through the pile across years and now sits at the base out of reach. And there is damp, which the dry-feeling surface hides completely and which announces itself by smell long before any mark shows. One wash addresses both. Both return within a season unless the drying is genuinely controlled, and controlling it is exactly what a house at the top of this valley cannot manage, no matter how open the place is.

The listing sets out an area we service, not premises open to callers. It shows where we work, the collection is made at your house, and Yatala takes care of the wash.
East out of the catchment, then north
That distance is ours, not yours. Tyalgum is collected with Murwillumbah and Uki on the deep valley leg, and the window is confirmed once the run is scheduled.
A festival, a store past a century, and the furthest village out
Two long unbroken runs in a village of five hundred and twenty one people.
The Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music was founded in 1991 by the violinists Carmel Kaine and John Willison, and it has been held every September in the years since.
Communities that keep something going for thirty years generally prefer restoring a good rug to replacing it, which is the work we do best.
Sustaining an annual festival for more than three decades in a village of this size takes a level of local commitment that does not happen by accident, and it has never lapsed.
The Tyalgum Store opened in 1907 and remains a genuine working local landmark, past its hundred and tenth year of trading from the same spot.
In a village where things last, the rugs last too, and the ones we collect here are usually far more repairable than their owners expect.
That kind of continuity stands out even among the hinterland villages of this valley, most of which have lost at least one of their original businesses along the way.
Tyalgum sits twenty six kilometres west of Murwillumbah in the upper Tweed catchment, the furthest inland of the hinterland villages we service regularly, alongside Uki, Burringbar and Stokers Siding.
Being the furthest point on the run changes the driving and nothing else. The inspection, the bath and the guarantee are the same ones a border suburb gets.
An average age of forty six marks it out as a settled community rather than a transient one, which is unusual this far up a valley.

Tyalgum questions, answered straight
You are a long way from Yatala. Does that cost extra?
The drive does not appear on your quote. The deep valley leg comes out here on its scheduled day alongside Murwillumbah and Uki, and the figure you are given is based on the rug rather than on how far the van travelled to reach it.
What actually goes into the price of a Tyalgum rug?
Four things: how it is constructed, how big it is, what fibre it is and what condition it has reached. Nothing else. The number quoted at your door is the number invoiced at delivery, with no adjustment in between.
The rug has been in this house since before we bought it. Any point washing it?
Often a great deal of point. Wool is a slow-ageing fibre and most of what looks like twenty years of wear turns out to be twenty years of soil packed down where nobody could reach it. The inspection tells you how much of the appearance is dirt and how much is genuine loss, before you decide anything.
There is a corner the dog has urinated on repeatedly. Is that recoverable?
Usually. What defeats a household product here is not the product, it is that the urine went past the pile years ago and now sits in the foundation. Full immersion is the only thing that operates at that level. Enzymes handle the odour after that, and any colour loss underneath is put to you at the assessment.
Will you take rugs from Uki and Murwillumbah on the same trip?
Both are on this leg, with Dungay, Crystal Creek and Byangum as well. Houses up here are well spaced, so combining a collection makes the morning work better for everybody, and there is a $20 discount on each rug after the first.
Nothing shows on the rug but the room smells close. Is that worth acting on?
Yes, and acting early is what keeps it cheap. The top of a rug dries first and the base takes weeks longer, so smell is the only early warning you get. Caught there, a straightforward wash finishes it. Left alone through another wet season it stops being straightforward.
