What a rug looks like and what it actually is
Appearance is the least reliable information a rug gives you. A piece can look finished and have twenty good years left, or look presentable and be structurally spent. We work from the foundation rather than the face, tell you which of those you have, and quote from there.

Rug washing Dungay, an hour and twenty from the wash floor
The farmland a television crew books every year
A British reality television series has filmed on Dungay farmland since 2003, bringing both the United Kingdom production and several international versions of the format to the same stretch of country. It has come back nearly every year since, pausing only for the 2020 and 2021 seasons during COVID-19 restrictions. That is a genuinely unusual entry on the record for a small Tweed Valley farming locality, and it is worth stating for what it is: an unlikely sideline on ordinary working country, not a description of the place. Underneath it, Dungay is river-flat farmland immediately northwest of Condong and its long-running sugar mill. Two figures describe the actual place better than the filming does: 316 residents in 2011 falling to 225 by 2021, and a median age of fifty, thirteen years above the national mark. That is the real Dungay, and the rugs come out of that version of it.
What a place is famous for and what a place actually is are usually two different subjects. We are interested in the second one.
Settled houses, older owners, and wool that has not moved
A median age thirteen years above the national figure tells you a great deal about what is on the floors here. People in this locality have generally been in the same house for a long time, which means the wool is older than the current furniture arrangement, frequently inherited, and almost never washed. It also means the traffic across it has been light and predictable, so genuine abrasion is rare. What is not rare is accumulation. River-flat country is humid country, and humidity changes the way soil behaves in a rug: instead of sitting loose on top where a vacuum could take it, it holds moisture, works down to the knot line and effectively cements itself into place over a decade. The visible result is a rug that has gone stiff and lost its depth of colour, and the standard interpretation of that is wear. It is almost never wear. A look at the reverse settles the question in under a minute, and it usually settles it in the rug's favour.
An hour and twenty, and what happens at the other end
The wash floor is a shade over a hundred kilometres from here, about an hour and twenty minutes through the valley and north over the border. The washing could in principle be done closer. The drying could not, and the drying is the half of the job that determines whether you are still happy in six months. A wool rug on a humid valley floor will dry on its surface and stay damp in its base for weeks, which is exactly how odour and growth get started. Our drying room runs on settings rather than on whatever the weather is doing, and that is the entire justification for the round trip. The driving is at our cost, the rug comes back in about a week, and it comes back dry all the way through.

What the listing marks is the country we work, not a place with an address you would use. The van comes onto the property, and our own crew has the rug from there until it is back on your floor.
Along the flats and north
Dungay shares its day with the Condong and Murwillumbah pickups, and collection carries no charge on that scheduled valley run.
A television crew that keeps coming back, a settled older community, and a mill next door
Working farmland with one genuinely unusual entry on its record.
A British reality television series has used Dungay farmland as its filming location since 2003, hosting the United Kingdom production along with several international versions of the same format.
Working farmland that has hosted an international production for over two decades is a specific piece of local knowledge, and knowing the country is part of knowing the run.
Filming has returned to the same stretch of this country nearly every year since, pausing only for the 2020 and 2021 seasons during COVID-19 restrictions, which is a genuinely unusual entry on the record for a small Tweed Valley farming locality.
The population eased from 316 in 2011 to 225 in 2021, with a median age of fifty, thirteen years above the national figure, making this an older and more settled community than much of the coastal run.
Where families stay on a property for decades the rugs stay too, and a piece that has never left the house is worth washing carefully rather than replacing.
The change is stated plainly here rather than dressed up. A locality this rural often sees its numbers move with farm amalgamation and generational turnover rather than any single dramatic cause.
Dungay sits immediately northwest of Condong, home to a sugar mill that has worked the same riverbank since 1880, part of the same close-knit stretch of Tweed Valley farmland.
Country this settled, next to an operation that has done one job on one site for more than a century, is a working pattern we recognise in our own business.
The two localities share the same red-soil, river-flat character, working farms rather than a commuter fringe or a coastal strip, and both sit on the same collection loop.

Dungay questions, answered plainly
Is the rug worn out, or just dirty?
Those are the two possibilities and they look identical from above, which is why we turn the rug over. The reverse shows whether the foundation is intact. In a house where traffic has been light for decades, a stiff handle and flat colour are almost always accumulated soil rather than wear, and that is entirely reversible.
Do you come out to the farm itself?
Yes. The valley run passes through this country on its scheduled day and the driver comes onto the property for the rug. There is no meeting point and no minimum. The trip is roughly a hundred kilometres each way and none of it appears on your quote.
Why does everything in the house feel slightly damp?
River-flat country holds humidity, and a wool rug holds it longer than the rest of the room because the base of the pile never gets a proper chance to dry. That is what stiffens the handle and eventually produces smell. Washing removes what has built up and controlled drying is what stops it building again.
There is old dog urine in one section. Is it worth trying?
Usually yes. The material is in the foundation rather than on the surface, which is why home treatment gives you a few weeks. A full bath reaches it, enzyme work breaks apart the compounds causing the smell, and controlled drying removes the humidity that keeps reactivating whatever remains.
Do you also collect from Condong and Murwillumbah?
Yes, both on the same valley loop, along with Kynnumboon, Tumbulgum and North Tumbulgum as the run works round. Two or three properties booking for the one visit is the sensible way to do it, and there is $20 off every rug past the first.
How long will we be without it?
Roughly a week from collection to delivery. Neither trip is made specially, both sit on scheduled runs, and that is why farmland this far in waits no longer than a coastal street. Where the timing is critical a 48 hour express option is available at additional cost.
