Red Sunday, and the town that answered it in brick
On 15 September 1907 a fire remembered locally as Red Sunday took the business district, around sixty buildings gone in a day. What happened next is the part worth knowing. The town did not shrink back to what it had been. It rebuilt bigger and in brick rather than timber, and the art deco street you walk through the centre of Murwillumbah today, cafes and clothing shops and antique dealers along it, is the direct product of that decision. The town had been surveyed in 1872, declared a village in 1879, connected by rail to Lismore in 1894 and made a municipality in 1902, so by 1907 it already had the confidence to treat a setback of that size as a chance to do the job properly the second time. Everything about how this place behaves since then follows the same pattern: keep what works, replace what has failed, and do the replacement better than the original.
Second time round is usually better, and that goes for rugs as much as it goes for buildings.

Ring the art deco centre with the housing and you get weatherboard homes from the banana and cane years, most of them holding rugs that arrived with a previous generation. That is the single most common Murwillumbah job: a wool piece thirty, forty, sometimes sixty years into its life, never once properly washed, and an owner who has decided it is beyond help. Nine times out of ten what they are looking at is not wear at all.
