One thing still running, and one that has stopped
The Majestic Theatre was built here in 1921 as a social hall, later ran as a picture theatre, and still screens today with a rare working Compton organ from 1936 in it. The building has been community owned since October 2006. That is a hundred years of keeping something in service, and it sits alongside a heritage precinct of the same character: the former Noosa Council Chambers from 1911, the Pomona Hotel from 1913, the Memorial School of Arts from 1926 and a war memorial rotunda from 1939, which together earned the town its standing as Noosa Shire's living heritage town inside the UNESCO-listed Noosa Biosphere Reserve. The town's other famous fixture went the other way. The King of the Mountain race up Mount Cooroora ran as an annual July event for 44 years and was permanently retired in March 2024, when permit conditions on the mountain's deteriorating summit track could no longer be met. Both outcomes are honest ones, and knowing which applies is the whole point.

A real main street, and acreage on the slopes
Pomona is a genuine township rather than a scattering of acreage, which makes it unusual for the northern hinterland. Cottages and heritage buildings line the main street, and small acreage blocks run up the slopes around it under Mount Cooroora's steep volcanic profile. The rug stock follows that shape. In town there are older wool pieces in older houses, often inherited with the building and washed rarely if ever. On the blocks there are larger family rugs taking the load of a house where the door opens onto paddock or bush. Both types come to us with the same question attached, which is whether the rug is worth keeping. Almost always the answer is yes, and the reason people doubt it is that they are looking at a decade of soil sitting at the knot line and reading it as wear. Back country damp, and why the drying travels
Sitting in Noosa's back country with the rainforest fringe of the biosphere close by, Pomona carries the same cloud, drizzle and cool nights as the rest of the range along with an extra measure of damp from the country around it. Indoors that produces the familiar northern hinterland problem: a rug that holds moisture in its base for weeks while the surface reads perfectly dry, and that builds odour and then growth in rooms nobody thinks about. Pet Stain and Odour

Left alone, a urine problem does not stay still, it gets worse, because each repeat adds to a deposit already sitting in the foundation. That is the case for dealing with it rather than waiting. A bath reaches the backing and lifts the deposit clear, enzymes break down the compounds causing the odour, and controlled drying keeps the smell from coming back in warm weather.

Odour Removal

Odour is chemically attached to wool rather than resting on it, which is why the usual remedies buy a day and then hand the problem back. Washing breaks the attachment and rinsing carries away what has been released, in that order and with neither step shortened. Nothing scented is used at any stage, because a perfumed rug that still smells is worse than one that simply smells.

Rug Spot Cleaning
A recent mark on a rug that is otherwise sound, dealt with in the room instead of sending it two hours south.
Knowing when to stop is the skill, and it is the one most home attempts lack. Working past the point of improvement crushes the pile beside the mark and drags its edge outward into clean fibre, which produces a wide pale patch that is genuinely harder to fix than the original. We test, use the least that works, comb the surface back true, and stop at the right moment.

Some pieces are simply too fragile for a full soak, or the colour cannot be trusted once wet, so compound cleaning at low moisture takes over instead.

Mould Rug Cleaning
A rug rolled away for a season, or grey coming up through the reverse in a room the sun never reaches.
Once growth has established, a rug is out of service until it is treated, and putting it back down untreated simply moves the problem to a new floor. Treating the bath removes the colony and the deposit anchoring it. Rinsing clears them both. The drying room afterwards takes out the moisture that allowed it, which is what returns the rug to service properly rather than temporarily.

Rug Moth Treatment
Wool going quietly in a spare room, a storeroom, or under a piece of furniture that has held the same position for years.
The reason moth damage gets so far is that nobody retires the rug from that room, so the damage continues on a floor still nominally in use. One treated wash finishes eggs, larvae and adults together, chewed fibre leaves with the rinse, and only afterwards can anybody judge honestly whether the piece stays in service or not.

Mount Cooroora rises 439 metres over Pomona, and the town's King of the Mountain race, which began with a bet, ran annually from 1979 with earlier races between 1958 and 1960, and was permanently retired in March 2024.
Pomona sits at the far end of our northern leg, and a town that remembers a 44 year fixture this clearly is one worth planning a long day around properly.
It started as a wager. Bruce Samuels, a railway porter, told drinkers at the local hotel in 1958 that an hour was enough to get up the peak and back down again, and he beat his own claim by twenty minutes. Races followed on and off to 1960, the event was revived in 1979, and from there it held its place on the July calendar for 44 years, ending when Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service conditions on the worn summit track could no longer be met. Fire had run across the peak and the surrounding Tuchekoi National Park for a week in 2014.

The name reflected the district's fruit-growing soil, and the population has grown quietly since, moving from 2,910 at the 2016 census to 2,931 in 2021. For a town whose own name was settled twice over on the grounds of not being mistaken for its neighbours, that steadiness is fitting.
