An honest figure for the gully street rugs
Rugs that have been in the same house for thirty years need a considered look, not a phone estimate. We inspect, we quote once, and the number stays where we put it.

Rug washing Bardon, for houses that keep what they buy
Steep streets, individual houses, long-held rugs
Bardon tucks into the eastern foothills 5.7 kilometres northwest of the city, its streets running along ridges divided by steep gullies with Ithaca Creek winding northeast through the middle. At the 2021 census 10,343 people lived here, and more than four fifths of the housing stock is stand-alone houses. The hills kept the blocks irregular and the houses individual, and most of what stands is timber and interwar under pre-1946 character protection, renovated carefully behind the original faces. Inside that means polished boards, wool rugs bought for the long haul and Persians that came with the family. It is a suburb where people ask what a rug needs rather than what a replacement would cost.
A rug in a Bardon house is usually older than the renovation around it, and in better condition than anyone expects.
Why damp is the local problem
The foothills catch storm cells early and let them go late. Streets running down toward Ithaca Creek stay damp for days after rain, and the shaded winter side of a gully dries slowly even in July. A closed timber house holds that moisture, and the base of a wool pile is where it collects. Between the wet spells the dry weeks push fine dust and leaf litter down past the tips of the fibre, so by the end of a Brisbane year a Bardon rug is carrying both problems at once, one on top of the other. Neither responds to vacuuming, because both live below where a vacuum reaches. Full immersion at Yatala takes the whole year back out at the foundation, and controlled drying is what makes sure the damp half does not simply start again.
The drive is ours, and we say what it is
Bardon to our Yatala wash floor is about 50 kilometres, three quarters of an hour on an ordinary run: off the hills to the tunnel and bypass links, then down the motorway to the Yatala turnoff. That is a long haul and there is no point pretending otherwise. It is also entirely our problem. The suburb has its place on a scheduled western day, the rolled rug goes to the driver from the top of your steps, and both directions travel with that day. What comes back is a rug looked at before it was priced, bathed by hand, dried under cover rather than in the sun, and combed out before it left. If any part of that misses, there are two days from the hand-back to say so and it goes in again. None of it asks you to leave the house or lift anything heavier than a rolled rug onto your own front landing.

Where a Bardon rug spends its week
That driving belongs to us. Bardon forms part of a scheduled western day, which covers the trip out and the trip home, and your collection window is set once the route exists.
A stone villa, a football club and a school above the creek
Three things this suburb has held onto for well over a century.
Joshua Jeays' 1863 stone house carried a Leicestershire hill's name.
A stone house that renamed a suburb is the strongest argument going for building things properly. The rugs in these homes were made the same way, and hand washing is what keeps them.
Builder, architect and early Brisbane mayor Joshua Jeays built Bardon House across 1863 and 1864, a two storey stone villa named for Bardon Hill, the highest point in his native Leicestershire and close to his and his wife Sarah's home towns. Sarah died before the house was finished. The villa still stands at 41 The Drive, heritage listed since 21 October 1992, and in 1925 the district around it dropped the name Upper Paddington and became Bardon.
Cobblers' Flat became a park, and the park became a football home.
A club running continuously since 1916 understands maintenance over replacement. So do we: 29 years of hand washing, one rug at a time.
The flat beside Ithaca Creek, known as Cobblers' Flat, had been a picnic and sporting ground since the 1870s before it opened as a public reserve named for David Bowman, the local member who championed its purchase and died months before the opening. Today it is home to Bardon Latrobe Football Club, founded as Latrobe FC in 1916 and merged with the Bardon club in 1970, joining two of the oldest clubs in Brisbane football.
Ithaca Creek State School has taught these gullies since 1885.
Families who settle near a 140 year old school tend to stay put, and their rugs stay with them. Washing is what lets one good rug serve that whole stretch.
Ithaca Creek State School opened on 28 September 1885, decades before the suburb took its current name, and it still teaches from its perch above the creek it is named for. Rainworth State School followed on 2 July 1928 and St Joseph's in 1938 as the interwar streets filled out, but the creek school remains the district's original.

Bardon questions, answered plainly
How much does rug cleaning in Bardon cost?
The rug sets the price. Size, fibre and condition together, and not one of the three can be judged without seeing it, so inspection comes before any number. From then on the quote is fixed. Pickup and delivery belong to the western run. Where a piece will not repay washing, you hear it at inspection instead of afterwards.
Our Persian came from a grandparent and has never been washed. Is that a risk?
More often it is an opportunity than a risk. Decades of settled grit sitting at the foundation is exactly what a slow bath lifts, and these pieces usually return in far better order than their owners expect. Dyes are checked first, and where any prove unstable we take the low moisture route and explain the reasoning.
How quickly can a rug be back on the floor?
Inside two days, if the 48-hour express service is used. That option carries an additional cost and is there for deadlines that truly cannot shift. Left alone a rug takes the usual seven days, and either way it comes out of the drying room dry through the whole thickness.
The dog urinated in the same corner more than once. Can the smell really be removed?
It can, so long as treatment travels as deep as the accident did. What soaked down sits in the foundation, and this is why every attempt from a bottle works for a fortnight and then stops. The bath washes it clear from below and an enzyme stage finishes off the source. Repeat accidents sometimes reach the dye, and that is named at assessment.
Do you also collect from Ashgrove, The Gap and Toowong?
Yes. One scheduled day through the hills gathers Bardon with Ashgrove, The Gap and Toowong, so a family member a suburb away goes on the same round. Any rug beyond the first comes with $20 off, which usually makes doing the whole house in one go the better call.
Our driveway is very steep. How does pickup work?
The driver comes to you and takes the rug rolled from wherever it is easiest to reach, usually the top of the stairs or the carport. There is no carrying down a slope. Rolled rather than folded is the only request, because a fold puts a crease into aged wool that can take weeks to fall out.
