A firm figure for a rural block on Hodgson Creek country
No figure is named while the rug is rolled. It comes down the range, opens flat at Yatala under proper light, and the number follows what is genuinely there.

Rug washing Hodgson Vale, on ground taken up before the city was
1840, and everything that came after it
Hodgson Vale is believed to carry the name of Sir Arthur Hodgson, who selected the Eton Vale pastoral run in July 1840. That was the second pastoral run established anywhere in what is now Queensland, and Hodgson later sat in the Legislative Assembly for Warrego between 1868 and 1869. The date is the point. Eton Vale was taken up before there was a settlement on the hill to the north, before the range road, before any of the streets that people now think of as Toowoomba. This locality is named for the first chapter rather than a later one, and everything else in the district, including the roads and the property lines, has arranged itself around a decision made in 1840.
Do the reading before the washing. Every rug that ever went wrong in this trade went wrong in the other order.
Creek country, and what it puts in a rug
Hodgson Creek runs through the locality and is ultimately a tributary of the Condamine River, which makes it part of the Murray-Darling system. That is not a scenic footnote, it is the reason the ground behaves the way it does. Creek country holds moisture low in the soil and gives it back through the floor of a house in the cold months. Add gravel drives, working dogs and paddock dust in the dry season and you have the two conditions that do the most quiet damage to wool: fine grit ground into the base by foot traffic, and damp sitting under the rug where nobody looks. Rugs like that usually appear far worse than they are, because the soil dulls every colour above it rather than destroying any of them.
A small district, handled the same as a large one
A provisional school opened here on 14 June 1906, became a state school on 1 January 1909, and closed in 1960. There is no school in the locality now, and children travel to Vale View, Ramsay and into Toowoomba for secondary years. Population has grown modestly and honestly, from 1,379 in 2016 to 1,444 in 2021, which makes this a small acreage community rather than a growth corridor, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What it does mean practically is that Hodgson Vale collections are batched with the rest of the southern acreage stops on the same run day, which is how we keep pickup free on a locality this far out. The rug gets exactly the same treatment as one from a street two minutes from the CBD. Nobody here is offered a shorter version of the job because the address is rural. The other thing a small district gets is continuity. On a run this size the same driver tends to see the same properties year after year, remembers which gate sticks and which dog needs a word, and knows which houses have the big wool pieces that only come off the floor every few years. That is worth more on acreage than any amount of scheduling software, and it is the reason a Hodgson Vale pickup is usually the easiest part of the day.

An 1840 run, a creek in the Murray-Darling, and a school that came and went
Working land that was working land before the city above it existed.
Hodgson Vale is believed to be named for Sir Arthur Hodgson, who selected the Eton Vale pastoral run in July 1840, the second pastoral run established anywhere in present-day Queensland. Hodgson later sat in the Legislative Assembly for Warrego from 1868 to 1869.
A locality named for the opening chapter of the district rather than a later one is the kind of founding-era detail worth knowing before we ever collect a rug from a house out here.
That 1840 selection predates Toowoomba itself as a settlement, which makes this locality's name a direct line back to the very first wave of European pastoral occupation on the Darling Downs rather than to anything that happened after the city was founded.
Hodgson Creek flows through the locality and is ultimately a tributary of the Condamine River, itself part of the Murray-Darling Basin, one of the largest river systems in the country.
Land fed by a real creek system puts real mud and paddock dust into every rug in the house, and ground-in dirt of that kind is exactly what a proper immersion wash was built to lift.
That creek country shapes the acreage landholdings which define Hodgson Vale today. Small rural blocks rather than a close-set township, working land that has stayed working land through every change in the city on the range above.
A provisional school opened here on 14 June 1906, became a state school on 1 January 1909, and closed in 1960. Hodgson Vale has no school of its own today, with children travelling to Vale View, Ramsay and into Toowoomba for secondary years.
Small does not mean thin. Hodgson Vale rugs are batched in with the other southern rural stops on the same run day, which is exactly how a locality this far out keeps free pickup.
Population has grown modestly rather than sharply, from 1,379 in 2016 to 1,444 in 2021. This is a small acreage community that has held steady across a decade, not a district being subdivided into something else.

Hodgson Vale questions, answered plainly
We are a fair way out. Is pickup genuinely free from here?
Yes, on the southern acreage run day. The way that works is batching: Hodgson Vale is collected alongside the other rural stops south of the city rather than as a special trip, which is what makes the leg viable. Book it in and we confirm the window once the order of the run is settled.
What decides the figure for a Hodgson Vale rug?
Everything comes off the inspection. What the rug is made of, what it measures, and what has happened to it since it was last washed. The drive is our cost, not a surcharge on yours. Once that figure is given it is the figure, and a rug that cannot be saved is returned with nothing owing.
The rug looks grey right across. Is it worn out or just filthy?
Usually filthy. Grey across a whole piece is normally fine soil packed down against the foundation dulling the colour above it, rather than pile that has actually gone. Worn fibre and packed grit look identical standing up and completely different once the rug is flat under light at Yatala.
One of the dogs urinated on the lounge rug. What now?
Ring us and leave it alone. Urine is at the backing within about a day, so scrubbing the top spreads the surface while the source stays exactly where it is. The bath floats the deposit out through the weave, enzymes break down what causes the smell, and the controlled dry closes it out.
Do you service Cambooya, Top Camp and Vale View too?
Cambooya and Top Camp are on the same southern leg as Hodgson Vale, and we collect through the rural roads either side of the New England Highway generally. Neighbours out here often send rugs together, which is worth doing, because every rug beyond the first on a booking has $20 off.
How long is the rug away for?
The washing is the short part. Getting a heavy wool piece dry, evenly, without it going stiff or sour, is what takes the days, and that is the bit nobody can safely hurry. Seven days is the honest figure. There is a 48 hour express option that costs more, and it is there for people with a date they cannot move.
