Nobody wrote down where the name came from
Top Camp has no documented origin for its name anywhere in the historical record. There are guesses available and we are not going to repeat any of them, because a guess dressed up as a fact is worse than an admitted gap. What is on record is that the locality was formally registered in 1999, which makes it one of the more recently named corners of the Toowoomba Region despite the land having been worked far longer than that. It covers 4.8 square kilometres eight and a half kilometres south of the CBD, sitting between 580 and 630 metres on the western shoulder of the range, immediately south of Kearneys Spring. Neighbours are Darling Heights, Kearneys Spring, Mount Rascal, Preston and Hodgson Vale. The regional research names Top Camp explicitly among the acreage and rural country ringing the city, alongside Hodgson Vale, Cotswold Hills, Westbrook and Cambooya.
We would rather tell somebody the origin is unrecorded than hand them a story we made up. That habit applies to rugs too, and it costs us work occasionally.
A school for thirteen years, then none for sixty five
Top Camp State School opened on 17 June 1947 and closed on 13 June 1960. Thirteen years, and no school has operated inside the locality since. Children now travel to Darling Heights State School or Drayton State School for primary years, and to Harristown or Centenary Heights State High School after that. The population figures tell the same story from a different direction, and they are worth stating exactly as they are rather than smoothed over. The count was 1,485 at the 2006 census. It was 852 by 2016. It came back to 902 in 2021. That is a real fall followed by a partial recovery, not a growth story, and dressing it up as one would be dishonest. What it is instead is genuine rural residential land at under 190 people to the square kilometre, acreage blocks rather than a subdivided estate, where a big wool rug does actual work on an actual floor.
Dust for half the year, mud for the other half
Sitting higher on the western shoulder of the range, Top Camp gets the city's cold frosty winters with the extra exposure that open rural country brings, and the rug problem alternates with the seasons. Through the dry months it is fine soil off the surrounding paddocks, carried in on boots and paws and driven down through the pile by ordinary foot traffic until it settles in the base of the weave. That is the damaging half, because dry soil is abrasive and it cuts at the wool from underneath every time somebody walks across the room, so a rug wears out from below where nobody can see it happening. Through wet spells it becomes mud instead, which is far more obvious and far less serious, since much of it can be lifted once it dries. Winter adds a third thing on top of both, because heaters run for months, houses close up, and rugs get rolled and put in a shed until spring, which is precisely the situation moths are waiting for. A full immersion bath deals with all three, since water reaches the bottom of the weave where the soil is, the rinse carries it off the property, and the moth treatment travels through the whole rug dissolved in that same water.

Pet Stain and Odour

The reason nothing bought in a bottle fixes this is location. The odour source is not in the wool you can see, it has gone through to the backing and settled there out of reach. Immersion is the only thing that gets to it, enzyme work handles the chemistry afterwards, and a controlled dry keeps it from returning.

The shed smell a rug picks up when it is stored between seasons, and the closed-up note a house takes on through a cold winter.
A smell is a material sitting in the weave, so as long as that material stays put the room keeps reporting it. Washing takes the material off the property completely and the rinse water makes the quantity obvious. Nothing scented is applied afterwards, because fragrance over a loaded rug gives a house two problems instead of one.

Top Camp, put simply
We are on acreage with a long driveway. Will the driver come down it?
He will. Collection happens at the house, or at a shed or veranda if that is easier, and the rug comes back the same way. Nobody is asked to carry a rolled rug out to a gate. Pickup and delivery are free on the southern run day, so the driveway is simply part of the trip.
What decides the figure on a Top Camp quote?
The rug in front of us and nothing else. Construction, size and current condition produce one number that already contains both trips out. It is given once and it stands. If we cannot improve a piece enough to justify the cost, that is what you will be told, at no charge.
It is dust half the year and mud the other half. Which is worse for a rug?
Dust, by a long way, though mud is the more obvious nuisance. Mud sits and dries and much of it can be lifted. Fine dry soil works right down into the base of the weave and stays there, grinding at the wool underfoot. That is the part only a full bath removes.
A working dog has urinated on the wool rug indoors. Is it salvageable?
In most cases, yes. Urine does not stay in the pile, it passes into the backing and settles, which is why topical products fade after a day. Immersion carries the source out with the water, enzymes break down what causes the odour, and controlled drying stops the smell coming back after rain.
