A known day, a known figure, and a known return
Country customers get told the day, the figure and the return window, and all three hold. The rug is inspected before any number exists, the number covers both trips out here, and it does not change afterwards. Where a piece has reached the end of what a wash can do, we say that instead of quoting.

Rug washing Wyreema, on the southern Darling Downs
The whole town, told in dates
The Southern railway line ran through this district as early as 1869 without stopping. A station arrived on 19 September 1887 under the name Beauaraba Junction. It was renamed Wyreema in October 1893, and the town took its name from the station rather than the other way round. The name is not an Aboriginal word and its origin is otherwise unrecorded, which we would rather report than paper over. In 1895 the provisional school opened, on 21 February, becoming Wyreema State School in 1904. The 1915 Drayton Deviation cut fifteen kilometres off the rail distance into Toowoomba. Suburban rail motor services carried passengers between 1917 and 1923. Every date in that list is a real one, and together they describe a town that grew around a line rather than being planned onto a map.
Nobody recorded where the name came from, so we say that. Inventing an explanation would be easy and it would also be the first thing we ever told you that was not true.
Two thousand people, forty square kilometres, one school
Wyreema State School still runs at 12 High Street with around 160 students, and a mobile library visits every Friday. Secondary students go back into the city to Harristown State High School, which is the ordinary rural pattern where primary years stay in town and the teenage years mean a daily drive. The population reached 2,076 at the 2021 census, up 13.2 percent from 1,834 five years earlier, spread across 40.5 square kilometres at just over 51 people to the square kilometre. The Toowoomba to Karara road runs north to south through the middle of it, and the neighbours are Athol, Westbrook, Finnie, Umbiram, Vale View and Cambooya. This is a genuine rural service town rather than a subdivision on the edge of the city, and the rugs reflect that. Large wool pieces on large floors in houses that get properly used.
The far end of the southern schedule
Wyreema sits 25.4 kilometres southwest of the Toowoomba CBD, which puts it between 155 and 160 kilometres from our wash floor at Yatala and a fraction over two hours of driving each way. There is no honest way to service that on request and we do not claim to. What happens instead is a scheduled southern day that works through Westbrook, Cambooya, Drayton, Greenmount and Top Camp as well as Wyreema, so a loaded van makes the trip once rather than a half empty one making it repeatedly. Two things follow for anybody out here. Collection and delivery cost nothing, because the kilometres are built into the route design instead of appearing later as a line on an invoice. And the day is fixed well ahead while the actual window firms up once the route is loaded, which is why we will name the day early and the hour late. Country customers generally prefer that to a promise nobody could keep, and it is the same reason the quoted figure is given once and never revised.
Wyreema to Yatala, the far end of the southern run
Directions from Wyreema to our Yatala facility
This is the far end of the southern schedule and it is absorbed into how the run is planned. Pickup and delivery are free on that day, and the driver comes to the property.
A renamed station, a school from 1895, and fifteen kilometres saved
A working rural town twenty five kilometres southwest of the city.
Wyreema takes its name from the railway station on the Southern line, which opened as Beauaraba Junction in September 1887 and was renamed Wyreema in October 1893. The name is not an Aboriginal word and its origin is otherwise unrecorded.
We would rather report a name's origin as genuinely unrecorded than repair the gap with a story, which is the same standard we apply to describing somebody's rug.
The Southern line had already run through the district without a station as early as 1869. The 1915 Drayton Deviation later cut fifteen kilometres off the rail distance into Toowoomba, and suburban rail motor services carried passengers between 1917 and 1923.
Wyreema Provisional School opened on 21 February 1895, became Wyreema State School in 1904, and still operates at 12 High Street today with around 160 students and a mobile library visiting each Friday.
A hundred and thirty years of a country school in one town produces households that stay, and households that stay are where the wool worth washing tends to sit.
Nearest secondary schooling is Harristown State High School back in Toowoomba, which is the classic rural pattern where primary years stay local and secondary schooling means a daily drive into the city.
The 2021 count reached 2,076, a rise of 13.2 percent on the 1,834 recorded five years earlier, which spreads about 51 residents over each square kilometre. The Toowoomba to Karara road runs north to south through the middle.
Working country puts big wool pieces on big floors and asks a lot of them, which is exactly the sort of rug a full immersion bath was built to bring back.
Across 40.5 square kilometres that leaves genuine working Downs country rather than an estate on the fringe of the city, with neighbours at Athol, Westbrook, Finnie, Umbiram, Vale View and Cambooya.

Wyreema, told the way it is
Is the postcode here 4352 or 4356?
It is 4352, which we have checked independently rather than taken from a regional list. Some older summaries put this district in the 4356 bracket alongside Cambooya, and both of those figures turn out to be wrong. It makes no difference to the service, but we would rather have the detail right.
Twenty five kilometres out. Is there a surcharge for the distance?
No. Wyreema sits at the far end of the scheduled southern day and those kilometres are part of the route design, not an extra line on a quote. Distance affects timing rather than price, which is why we will name the day well ahead of it and the hour only once the van is loaded.
How do you settle on a figure?
By inspecting the rug. Construction, size and current condition give one number that already contains both trips out here, and that number is given once. A piece that has passed the point of being worth the work gets described that way rather than quoted, at no cost to you.
There is dog urine soaked into a wool rug from the front room. Recoverable?
In most cases yes, and it needs the bath rather than anything applied at home. Urine goes past the pile and sits in the backing where surface products cannot follow it. Immersion carries the deposit out, enzyme work deals with the odour chemistry, and drying under control keeps the smell from coming back.
Do you also collect at Cambooya, Westbrook and Greenmount?
All three are on the southern day with us, along with Drayton and Top Camp. Given the distances involved it is worth putting every rug in the house onto one collection, and each rug beyond the first has $20 off.
How long will the rug be gone for?
About 7 days between collection and return. A 48 hour express service can be arranged for an added charge. Mention it at booking, because the southern Downs is worked on a scheduled day rather than at short notice.
