Rug washing Cambooya, south of the city in the cropping country

A name three explanations deep

Arthur Hodgson selected 65,000 acres here in 1840 and called the run Eton Vale. The surveyor Christopher Rolleston named the township itself Cambooya in 1843, and what that name means has been argued over ever since. The candidates include an Aboriginal word for tubers found in water holes, a word for egg or skull, and a word for reeds and rushes. Nobody has settled it in more than 180 years and we are not going to pretend to. The Eton Vale Homestead Ruins are heritage listed today and mark Hodgson's original run. Ruth Fairfax, who founded the Queensland Country Women's Association, lived in Cambooya until 1931, which is a substantial civic legacy for a town of this size to have produced.

A hundred and eighty years of arguing about a name, and a war memorial cut from stone so nobody would have to argue about that.

What did get settled, in stone and timber

Against a name nobody can agree on, the town built a series of things that are not in dispute at all. The war memorial is a twenty four foot obelisk cut from Helidon freestone, with crossed rifles and marble plaques, unveiled on 9 October 1921. The Bull and Barley Inn opened in 1902 as the Cambooya Railway Hotel and has since featured on the television travel programme Getaway. Three churches still stand on a main street this size: All Saints Anglican, consecrated in 1904, destroyed by cyclonic winds in 1914 and rebuilt and dedicated in 1915; Sacred Heart Catholic, opened on 9 November 1914 and still in its original wooden structure; and Cambooya Uniting. A fire destroyed the post office and the railway station buildings on the same day, 7 July 1908, and the town rebuilt and carried on.

465 metres, and what the seasons put in a rug

Cambooya sits at 465 metres, close enough to Toowoomba's own elevation to get the same weather: cold frosty winters and hot dry summers, with the cropping country all around adding its own dust every time the paddocks are worked. The dust is the part owners underestimate. It is fine, it is abrasive, and it does not stop at the top of a pile, it filters down and settles against the foundation where it cuts fibre from underneath. Wood fire soot arrives through the colder half of the year and goes into the same place. The population has grown from 1,584 in 2016 to 2,260 in 2021, roughly 43 percent, which for a Darling Downs farming town is a genuine surge and means a good many rugs here have never been through a proper wash. One immersion clears the year out, and the drying room at Yatala finishes it flat and properly dry.

Rug Cleaning Cambooya

A hundred and eighteen square kilometres at 465 metres, twenty one kilometres south of the city, farmed continuously since 1840.

There is nothing uncertain about how a rug from this district gets treated, whatever else around here is still debated. The piece is examined for construction, condition and any weakness, then washed as a whole rug under water, rinsed until the outflow finally settles, and dried flat in a room where the air is set rather than guessed at.

  • Nothing uncertain about the method
  • Examined for weakness first
  • Air set, not guessed at

Rug Washing Cambooya

Full hand immersion for the substantial wool pieces that belong in the high-ceilinged rooms of older Downs houses.

Cropping soil is fine enough to pass through a pile without stopping, and once it reaches the foundation it sits there and abrades the fibre from below. Nothing short of water shifts it. So the rug goes fully under, is worked by hand only where the weave will take it, and stays in the rinse for as long as the water keeps colouring.

  • Fine enough to pass through
  • It abrades from below
  • As long as the water colours
Most popular

Stain Removal

Black soil off the paddock after rain, wine at a long table, and marks that came with a house bought from a retiring family.

There are two useful facts about a mark: what it is made of, and how long it has been sitting in the wool. Both change the treatment and both get settled before anything is applied. We test what the fibre and the dye will accept, work within that, and then tell you which marks are gone and which are staying.

  • What it is, and how long
  • Settled before anything is applied
  • Which are gone, which are staying

Pet Stain and Odour

Farm dogs that come in at dusk, a cat with a preferred corner, and a smell that gets stronger every time it rains.

Ask why the smell keeps coming back and the answer is always the same: the urine is not where anyone has been cleaning. It has gone through into the foundation and stays put there. Water is the only thing that empties that layer, an enzyme stage then breaks apart what actually produces the odour, and a controlled dry finishes it properly.

  • Not where anyone has been cleaning
  • Water is the only thing
  • Broken apart, then dried properly

Odour Removal

Wood fires through a Downs winter, wet dogs, and the shut-in smell of a farmhouse that has been closed against frost since May.

None of those is an atmosphere, they are all substances that have taken up residence inside the fibre, which is why airing does so little. Immersion breaks the hold and the rinse takes the substance away with the water. We do not put anything scented on afterwards, since a fragrance over an odour just means the house now has both.

  • Substances, not atmospheres
  • The rinse takes it away
  • The house would have both

Rug Spot Cleaning

One recent accident on a rug that is otherwise sound is often better handled at the house than trucked down the range.

It is pressure that leaves the lasting mark, not the spill. Working at a patch pulls wool out of the direction it was woven to lie in and widens the stain in the same motion, and the pale outline afterwards will not lie back down. We test, use next to no force, comb the pile straight and say plainly when the bath is the honest answer.

  • Pressure, not the spill
  • The outline will not lie down
  • Plain when the bath is the answer

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction is right for the hard-used items: mats at a back step, passage runners and machine-made rugs where boots come off.

They are manufactured for the method and are back in use within hours, which counts on a property where a floor cannot sit bare. On hand knotted wool the damage builds across repeated cleans, quietly enough that nobody links it to what caused it. We settle the construction question before starting and explain which route the piece is taking.

  • Back in use within hours
  • Quietly enough to go unlinked
  • Settled before starting

Rug Dry Cleaning

Low moisture handling for old pieces where the dye was never dependably fixed, or where a cotton foundation has grown hard and fragile.

Round here a rug that has been in one family since the cheese factory days is not unusual, and age alone settles nothing about whether it can be wet. A brief test underneath answers it immediately. Where the answer is no, compound applied in careful sections is the responsible route, since a colour that has travelled cannot be sent back.

  • Age alone settles nothing
  • A brief test underneath
  • It cannot be sent back

Water Damage Restoration

A tank stand giving way, a header line splitting in a frost, or a storm that came through while the house was empty.

How long the rug has been lying wet decides almost everything, and out here that stretch is often measured in days rather than hours. Wool holds moisture and an old backing holds it far longer again. Ring and describe the water accurately. We stabilise and dry it before forming any opinion, and no charge attaches to the opinion.

  • Measured in days, not hours
  • Describe the water accurately
  • No charge on the opinion

Mould Rug Cleaning

A rug stood rolled in a shed over a wet season, or one lying in a shut farmhouse room that nobody enters until spring.

Growth is not a mystery and it does not need much: something damp, something still, and enough time for the two to work together. A shed provides all three without trying. The dosed bath makes what has grown let go of the wool it is attached to, the rinse carries it clear, and the drying stage takes out the damp that started the sequence.

  • Damp, still, and long enough
  • A shed provides all three
  • The damp taken out last

Rug Moth Treatment

Wool goes where nothing is disturbed, and a farmhouse has spare rooms and heavy furniture that stay exactly where they were left.

What gives it away is usually a shift of furniture or a rug being unrolled, months or years after the feeding happened. Our answer is to put the treatment into the bath itself, so eggs, larvae and adults all meet it in the same soaking rather than in three separate attempts. What has genuinely gone is countable once the loose fibre rinses out.

  • A shift of furniture gives it away
  • Handled at once, in the water
  • Countable once it rinses out

Stain Protection

Once everything else is finished, a clear coat can go on. Paler wool in a room that gets used every day is the case for it.

It buys a short window and we describe it exactly that way. A spill rests up on the surface a moment longer before it reaches the knots, and that moment is generally what decides whether a cloth is enough. Nothing more is claimed for it. The rug's handle, its sheen and its colour are all unchanged.

  • A short window, described exactly
  • Whether a cloth is enough
  • Handle, sheen and colour unchanged

Three Cambooya stories

A contested name, a stone obelisk and a pub that made television

Cropping country farmed since 1840, with a main street that keeps its buildings.

A pub on national television, and a memorial in Helidon stone

The Bull and Barley Inn opened in 1902 as the Cambooya Railway Hotel and has since featured on the travel programme Getaway, while the town's 24 foot war memorial obelisk, cut from Helidon freestone with crossed rifles and marble plaques, was unveiled on 9 October 1921.

A town that builds in quarried stone and keeps its buildings standing for a century is working to the same standard we apply to a rug that has been in a family for decades.

Named by a surveyor, farmed since 1840

Arthur Hodgson selected 65,000 acres here in 1840 and named the run Eton Vale, before the surveyor Christopher Rolleston named the township itself Cambooya in 1843.

Layered history on land farmed since 1840 usually means houses that have held the same furniture for generations, which is exactly where the rugs worth washing properly are.

Growing faster than the district around it

The population rose from 1,584 in 2016 to 2,260 in 2021, about 43 percent in five years, which is a genuine surge for a Darling Downs farming town.

A cropping town growing at this rate on ground farmed since the 1840s is the kind of steady southern demand our Toowoomba run was built to keep up with.

The southern Downs run

The other stops on Cambooya's day

The townships south of the city are worked on one run.

Good to know

The questions Cambooya households ask

Which postcode do you have us under?

4358. A number of listings still carry an older code for Cambooya, so it is worth setting down clearly. Nothing about the service or the figure changes either way, but it does keep our paperwork and the delivery details lined up with your own mail.

How do you arrive at a figure?

The rug decides it. Size, construction and the condition it has reached are the three inputs, and the drive in and out of the district is already inside the number rather than added to it. We inspect, quote once, and the quote holds through the job.

The paddocks are worked right up to the house. Does that matter for rugs?

It matters a great deal. Cropping dust is finer than anything a town rug meets, and fine dust does not stay on the surface. It filters down through the pile and settles against the foundation, where it works like sandpaper every time somebody walks over the rug.

The dog has one spot it keeps returning to. Is the smell permanent?

Rarely. The urine has gone through the wool and settled in the foundation, which is why every surface attempt fails and the smell comes back with the next wet week. Putting the rug fully under water empties that layer, an enzyme stage removes the odour itself, and any damage to the dye beneath is reported to you before we begin.

Do you also collect at Wyreema, Hodgson Vale and Greenmount?

Those three are on the southern run with Cambooya, and Top Camp and Middle Ridge sit on the way back in. Where a house has several pieces, sending them at once is the practical choice, with $20 off each rug beyond the first.

What is the turnaround from out here?

Roughly 7 days from the collection, distance included. Express handling inside 48 hours can be arranged for an extra charge when something is urgent. The southern Downs has its own scheduled day, so it helps to tell us early if you are working toward a date.
