Named for running water, worked since 1841
John Campbell, known everywhere as Tinker, took up the Westbrook pastoral run in 1841 and named it after the brook that watered it. There is no grander story than that and none is needed. The country here is hillier than the flat cropping ground further west, with Bunkers Hill at 631 metres and Sugarloaf at 598 metres rising through the locality, and the heritage listed Westbrook Homestead still stands from the run's earliest decades. Sixty point seven square kilometres now hold 4,408 people, up from 3,885 in 2016, which is 13.5 percent growth in five years and among the quickest anywhere around Toowoomba. New rural residential blocks are going in between the working farms rather than replacing them, so the district is adding houses without losing what it was.
A church became a house instead of a demolition job. That is the same decision a customer makes when they send us a rug rather than going shopping for a new one.
The habit of keeping things and giving them another job
Two buildings tell you most of what you need to know about this district. The Westbrook War Memorial went up in 1922, recording 47 local men who served in the First World War, and it is still cared for a century later. The Westbrook Presbyterian Church opened in 1902 and, when its congregation days ended, it was converted into a private residence around 1995 instead of being knocked over. Bunker's Hill State School now carries the district's primary schooling with around 253 students, after Westbrook State School and Athol State School both closed. None of that is sentimentality, it is a practical read on what is worth keeping. A hand knotted wool rug is the same calculation. What the southern Downs puts into a rug
Out here summers run hotter and drier than in the city and winter nights run colder, and both extremes leave something behind in a rug. Summer means fine soil off cropping ground and hillside grazing country, carried in on boots and paws and pushed down through the pile by ordinary foot traffic until it sits in the base of the weave. That is the damaging part, because soil is abrasive and it cuts at the wool from inside every time somebody walks across the rug. Winter means the opposite problem, with rugs rolled and stored while the fires are going, which is precisely the situation moths want. Neither problem responds to surface cleaning. Both come out in a full immersion bath, where water reaches behind the soil, the moth treatment travels through the whole weave in that same water, and the drying afterwards happens flat under air we control rather than in a shed.

Pet Stain and Odour
Working dogs that come inside at the end of a day, and cats that pick one spot on one rug and never move off it.
Owners tend to attack the pile, and the pile is not where the trouble is. The urine has gone through to the backing and settled in there. Only a full bath reaches that far, and only enzyme work afterwards takes apart what causes the smell rather than covering it over. Controlled drying is what makes the fix survive a wet week.

Odour Removal
The closed shed smell that gets into a rug stored between seasons, and the damp note a farmhouse takes on after a long wet spell.
Odour is a substance, not an atmosphere, and if the substance is still in the weave then the smell is still in the house. Washing takes it off the property completely and the rinse proves the point. Nothing perfumed goes on afterwards, because scent over a damp rug is worse than the smell it was meant to cover.

Rug Dry Cleaning
Low moisture work for older pieces coloured in a era before fixing was dependable, and for backings that decades on a floor have weakened.
If a backing has gone brittle and the colours were badly fixed to begin with, immersion is the wrong tool and using it anyway would finish the rug off. That gets checked rather than assumed. Where the check says no, compound replaces the bath, applied section by section, and the piece never gets wet at any point.

Mould Rug Cleaning

Rolling a slightly damp rug and standing it in a shed is the single most common way growth starts out here, because a roll holds moisture in the middle where nothing can dry. A treated bath clears the growth and what feeds it together, the rinse takes the rest, and controlled drying shuts the conditions down properly.

Rug Moth Treatment
Wool goes wherever nothing gets disturbed, and a farmhouse has spare rooms, storage sheds and unused corners in quantity.
Cold winters out here mean rugs get rolled up and put away, and a rug put away is exactly what moths are looking for, undisturbed and out of the light for months. The treatment travels in the wash water so nothing in the weave is missed, and the true damage only becomes measurable once the loose fibre has rinsed away.

Stain Protection
An optional clear finish once the rug is washed, worth considering on pale wool in a house where the back door does a lot of work.
The benefit is the pause before a spill sinks in. Liquid stays up on the fibre tips a few seconds longer and comes away on a cloth without ever reaching anything structural. That is all it does, and describing it as protection would be claiming too much. Handle, sheen and colour are exactly as they were.

It will, because the dust is not sitting on the wool, it has worked down into the base of the weave where a vacuum cannot follow. Submersion lets water get in behind it and carry it out. What comes off in the rinse is usually the part that surprises people most about the whole job.
How do you price a rug from a Westbrook property?

Immersion flushes it out of the foundation, enzymes break down what remains, and the controlled dry stops the cycle restarting.
