A considered figure for rugs with provenance
A piece that arrived with the house deserves a considered number rather than a guess down the phone. It is read carefully, the figure is set, and after that the figure does not move.

Rug washing for Graceville's oldest floors
Some of Brisbane's finest old riverside homes
Graceville occupies just 2.1 square kilometres inside a loop of the Brisbane River, about ten kilometres by road southwest of the CBD, with 4,764 residents at the 2021 census and the rail line running up its spine. Together with Chelmer and Sherwood it holds some of the best old riverside housing in the city: full-verandah Queenslanders and interwar houses on deep blocks, hoop pine floors underfoot, and a heritage streetscape thick with war service homes from the 1920s. These are wool and Persian rug households almost by default. Pieces bought decades ago, or inherited along with the house itself, owned by people who would like them treated as carefully as the floors they lie on.
A rug that came with the house is part of the house. It gets handled that way.
River silt, and the shade that keeps it damp
Low riverside ground holds humid air right through the warm months, and the big established gardens that give these streets their character keep the shade damp long after rain has stopped. Fine river-flat silt works into rug pile year on year, so slowly that nobody in the house can point to when it started, and closed-up rooms in the older homes let moisture settle deep into the wool on top of it. The result is a rug that has lost its depth without ever looking dirty. Full immersion flushes silt and damp odour from the base of the fibre, and controlled drying at Yatala sends every piece home with nothing left in it, because a heritage rug returned even slightly damp is a heritage rug heading for trouble.
Fringes, selvedges and the parts machines ruin
The reason we hand wash rather than run a machine over anything is easiest to see at the edges of an old rug. Fringes and selvedges are where a machine head cannot tell the difference between the rug and the finish on it, and where decades of careful ownership get undone in a single pass. Hand work goes at the pace the piece requires and stops where it should. It also means somebody is looking at your rug the whole way through, which is how brittle spots, old repairs and dyes that will not hold get found before they become a problem rather than after. Where the honest recommendation is that a rug should not be washed at all, that is the recommendation you get, at the assessment, before any money changes hands. We lose a little work that way and keep the customers, which has turned out to be the better trade over 29 years.

A pioneer's daughter, a picture palace and a 1928 school
A suburb whose character has held steady for a century.
The railways named the station for Grace Grimes in 1875.
A suburb named for one family's daughter tends to keep its history in its living rooms as well. Rugs here often arrive with a story attached, and they get washed like it.
When the Queensland Railways Department named the station here on 4 February 1875, it chose Graceville, after Grace Grimes, daughter of the district pioneer Samuel Grimes. The suburb that grew up around the platform simply took the station's name and kept it, which means the whole place is, quite literally, named after a local girl.
Movies have screened on this spot for more than a century.
A century-old cinema survives on care and loyalty, and so does a century-old rug. Plenty of pieces in these streets are older than the talkies, and they respond beautifully to a proper hand wash.
The Graceville Picture Gardens opened as an open-air theatre in 1922, was roofed and enclosed during the 1930s once the talkies arrived, and took the name Regal in 1953 to mark the coronation. It runs today as a twin cinema in the middle of Graceville's shopping strip, still family-operated, and going to the pictures around here remains what it has always been, which is a short walk from home.
Graceville State School opened on 13 August 1928.
Interwar streets mean interwar floors, and rugs do genuine work protecting them. Our riverside route collects from these school-side streets on a scheduled day each week.
Graceville State School opened on 13 August 1928, as the riverside estates filled with young families between the wars, and Christ the King followed on 25 January 1937 with an initial sixty students. The school still anchors the same streets of interwar homes it was built to serve, which is a large part of why the suburb's character has held so evenly for nearly a hundred years.

Graceville questions about older rugs
Can a rug that came with the house in the 1950s still be washed?
Almost always, and the outcome tends to surprise people. Wool of that vintage was built to last and washes beautifully once the accumulated silt is out of it. The assessment reads its real state first, brittle areas and old repairs included, and you get a straight recommendation before anything is booked in.
Will washing damage the fringes on an antique piece?
Not with hand work, and hand work is the only method on this floor. Fringes and selvedges are precisely what a machine damages, because a machine cannot tell where the rug ends and the finish begins. If an edge has already frayed or a binding has started to go, you are shown it during the assessment along with a plain account of what washing changes and what it does not.
What is the cost of having a Graceville rug cleaned?
It depends on the piece: dimensions, fibre, age and condition together. Hand knotted work takes longer than a machine made rug does, and the figure reflects that honestly. The inspection produces one price that then stays put, both legs sit inside the riverside route, and a piece that cannot earn back what it costs is named there.
Will an immersion wash fade the colours in a vintage rug?
No, provided the dyes are checked in advance, and here they always are. Fading comes from sunlight and from wrong chemistry, never from a bath that has been run correctly. Most vintage pieces come out reading deeper than they went in, because years of grey silt had been sitting on top of the colour.
The old dog urinated on an inherited rug. Is it ruined?
Rarely. Urine settles into the foundation, and that is why the smell survives every surface treatment and comes back each time the weather turns humid. A full bath clears that layer out, enzymes settle the residue, and drying the piece right through removes what sets it off again. Where repeated accidents have shifted the dyes, the assessment says so honestly.
Do Chelmer, Sherwood and Corinda share the same run?
They do, along with Oxley and Tennyson nearby. One scheduled riverside day covers the loop, so neighbours or family a few streets away can send pieces on a single booking, with $20 coming off each rug after the first.
