A fair figure for a Corinda rug with history
An inherited rug cannot be numbered without being seen, and a telephone estimate either overshoots or gets revised. Examination precedes pricing, the price is set a single time, and that is the number.

Rug washing Corinda, where good things get kept
The workhorse of the riverside rail suburbs
Corinda covers three square kilometres about thirteen kilometres southwest of the city, with the Brisbane River on one side and Oxley Creek on the other and the rail line threading the ridge between them. The 2021 census counted 5,555 residents. If Chelmer is the jewellery box of these rail suburbs then Corinda is the working household: full verandah Queenslanders and interwar timber homes along the high streets, post war family houses filling the blocks between, and a long settled population that holds onto things rather than replacing them. The rugs follow the same logic. Wool pieces bought decades ago, the occasional inherited Persian, and family rugs that have served three generations of the same front room. What owners here want is somebody who knows what a rug is actually worth before quoting on it, and who will say plainly when it is not worth the money.
People ring us thinking the rug has had it. Most of the time it has just been quietly filling up for thirty years.
A name that came a thousand kilometres to get here
Corinda took its name from the railway station, and the station's name travelled a very long way indeed: it came from Corinda, a pastoral run near Aramac in western Queensland owned by Sir Arthur Palmer, the colony's one time Premier. So a leafy riverside suburb thirteen kilometres from Brisbane answers to an outback cattle station more than a thousand kilometres away. The suburb's other distinguishing feature is its schools. Corinda State School opened on 1 June 1927 and has never been alone: St Joseph's Catholic Primary opened in 1917, St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School followed in 1929, and Corinda State High School arrived in 1960. Few Brisbane suburbs of this size carry four schools of such long standing, and the morning school run has shaped these streets for close to a century.
Damp from both sides, heat along the ridge
Having the river on one flank and Oxley Creek on the other means the low streets hold damp air right through the warm months, while the ridge takes the westerly heat on top of it. Wool pile in an older timber home absorbs that moisture at the same time as it collects the fine dust coming up from beneath the floorboards, and neither arrives fast enough for anyone to notice. What people eventually see is a Corinda rug that has gone quiet: the pattern is still there but the depth has drained out of it over five or ten years. Yatala strips the accumulation from below, so the piece goes back onto the floor dry underneath as well. About 42 kilometres in each direction.

What happens after the van leaves
No household should attempt that trip. These streets ride the weekly riverside day, travel is ours, and a collection time is confirmed when the run is set.
A cattle run, a hilltop plot and four long standing schools
A suburb that has kept its oldest places and its oldest habits.
A riverside suburb wearing the name of a pastoral station near Aramac.
A name that crossed the state and stuck suits rugs that do the same. Plenty of Corinda's wool pieces have moved house three times and are still worth washing properly.

So a leafy riverside suburb 13 kilometres from Brisbane answers to an outback cattle station more than a thousand kilometres away, one of the stranger naming journeys on the network.
A family's hilltop burial ground from the 1860s, heritage listed and still kept.
Corinda keeps its oldest places with patience and care. That is the standard its oldest rugs deserve too, and hand washing is how we meet it.
Arthur Morley Francis and his wife Angela were among Corinda's first settlers, buying 21 acres running up from the river in 1862. When their youngest son Clement died soon after, they set aside an acre of hilltop as a burial ground, and family graves from the 1860s through to 1966 rest there behind white hardwood fencing, under a lychgate Angela Francis added in 1902. The site at Francis Street and Dewar Terrace joined the Queensland Heritage Register on 7 September 2004 and is kept by Brisbane City Council.
Corinda State School opened in 1927, in a suburb unusually rich in schools.
School run suburbs are rug suburbs: hallway runners and lounge rugs that work hard all term, collected rolled from the front step on our weekly riverside run.

Corinda questions, answered straight
How much for a rug from a Corinda front room?
Pricing depends entirely on the piece, so an inspection precedes any number. Size, fibre, weave, and state all count. Once quoted, the figure does not move. Travel both ways is included on the riverside day, and a rug past helping is named at that point.
It has been in the family forty years. Still washable?
Age by itself presents no obstacle, and pieces of forty years are the most satisfying work we do. What matters is the state of the foundation and whether the dyes hold, both of which are tested first. Genuine risk is reported before anything else happens.
Is there a faster option than a week?
A faster option exists. A 48 hour alternative is offered at a modest premium above standard. The standard path occupies roughly seven days, and nothing is returned still damp underneath.
The cat urinated on the hall runner. Will the smell return?
Recurrence stops once the cause is gone. Urine reaches the backing, so a spray only settles it until the next damp spell off the creek. A bath removes the residue at the root, enzymes clear the salts, and a rug dried to the last thread holds nothing.
Do Sherwood, Graceville and Oxley go on the same trip?
Inclusion is automatic, since all three sit on the riverside day with these streets, so relatives a few streets apart send rugs on the one stop. Rugs numbered two and upward take $20 off, which is why bookings here involve several pieces.
Who handles the rug while it is away?
Custody rests with our own people from start to finish, front step to wash floor and back. No subcontractor appears anywhere, and the rug does not pass between operators. That matters most on a piece in the family longer than anybody can properly remember.
