Streets that run down and stop

Rug washing Fig Tree Pocket, where quality gets kept

A suburb the river built, and no through traffic

Fig Tree Pocket covers five square kilometres about thirteen kilometres southwest of the city, and it is a genuine pocket: the Brisbane River loops around three of its sides and the Centenary Motorway closes the fourth. The result is a suburb with essentially no through traffic. Streets run down toward the water and stop, which is why the pocket has stayed quiet, green and tightly held while the city expanded around it. The 2021 census counted 4,345 residents. The housing is large homes on big blocks with long river frontages, and the population is settled in the way that only happens where nobody has any reason to leave. The rugs reflect exactly that: fine wool, Persian and designer pieces chosen for large living spaces, bought once and kept. Owners here care as much about who handles the rug as about the wash itself, which is fair, and the answer is that our own team does all of it.

People here buy once and keep it. That only works if somebody maintains the thing properly along the way.

One tree, and a school older than the streets

The name comes from the Moreton Bay figs that grew on this river pocket, and from one tree in particular. In 1866 a fig here was photographed and described at the time as able to shelter 400 people, and a reserve of 1.6 hectares was created around it in the same year. What became of that tree is honestly unknown, but the name it anchored has covered the whole pocket ever since. The school is nearly as old as the story. Fig Tree Pocket State School opened on 4 September 1871, when this ground was farmland and river landings, and a post office followed in 1878. More than 150 years later it still serves the same land, one of the small group of Brisbane schools that have passed the century and a half mark, and the centre of family life in the pocket.

River air on three sides, and shade that never lifts

Having water around three quarters of the boundary means river air reaches most streets here, and the low ground holds damp through the warm months while the big established gardens keep shade over closed rooms all summer. Wool takes in that moisture along with the fine river flat dust that comes with it, quietly and continuously. Nothing about the process looks like soiling. What happens instead is that a rug loses depth over five or ten years, the colours go slightly muted, and because it happens to everything in the room at the same rate nobody notices until a new piece arrives beside it. Yatala takes the accumulation out from below, so the piece returns to a shaded room dry the whole way down. Around 46 kilometres in each direction.

Rug Cleaning Fig Tree Pocket

The complete service for a large house: the statement piece under the main seating, the hall runner, the wool that anchors a room three times the size of a normal lounge.

Big rooms take big rugs, and a big rug is where a household's whole year quietly accumulates. River air arrives from three directions and the established gardens keep the shade on, so the pile takes in damp and fine river flat dust together. None of it shows until the rug is under water. Around 7 days, priced at inspection.

  • Collected rolled at the door
  • Priced at inspection, once
  • No damp left anywhere in it

Rug Washing Fig Tree Pocket

Immersion, used here on hand knotted Persian and fine wool alike, means the piece is submerged, hand washed at the correct level, and rinsed until entirely clear.

A rug bought as a considered purchase should get the treatment its maker intended, which means water and hands rather than a machine head skating across the top. Immersion is gentle on knots and dyes while genuinely thorough at the foundation. That has been the way on this floor for 29 years.

  • Submerged and hand washed
  • The correct pH, every time
  • Rinsed until entirely clear
Most popular

Stain Removal

Red wine on the dining piece, olive oil from a long lunch, ink from a study desk. The fibre is established before a single product is chosen for it.

On a valuable rug an incorrect chemistry, rather than merely failing, fixes the mark and strips dye at the same time, and that is not recoverable at any price. Dyes are tested out of sight and treatment matches the actual fibre. A plain division follows between what comes out fully and what merely softens, delivered before any work begins.

  • Fibre established first
  • Dyes tested out of sight
  • Plain division of outcomes

Pet Stain and Odour

A dog with the run of a large pocket house, or a cat that has decided one corner belongs to it. The accident goes past the pile and settles in that backing.

A surface product holds the smell a fortnight, then a humid week off the river draws it back up. Immersion pulls residue out of the foundation, enzymes take apart salts a rinse cannot lift, and a piece dried out entirely holds nothing capable of returning. It is also by far the gentlest.

  • Carried out through the base
  • Enzymes neutralise the remainder
  • Dried out entirely, not partly

Odour Removal

Over a wet summer a big pocket house develops a closed room note, sitting at the base of the pile well beneath anything a vacuum or spray will find.

Water on three sides keeps the low ground damp for months and mature gardens hold shade over rooms nobody opens, so wool records the entire season. Fragrance means two smells rather than none. Immersion breaks the cause down, the rinse carries it clear, and the piece returns smelling of nothing.

  • The source dissolved out
  • Carried clear in the rinse
  • Returns smelling of nothing

Rug Spot Cleaning

A mark on an otherwise perfect piece, valuable enough to warrant caution, is handled in place. Dyes are proved, the spot lifts, and the pile returns to level, all without committing a valuable piece.

Restraint matters more in this pocket than anywhere, since working a mark hard sends it wider and crushes the pile around it, and on silk or a fine viscose blend that crushing is permanent. Where it cannot be done safely we say so directly, and the decision stays entirely with you.

  • Contained, never spread
  • Nothing applied before a test
  • Explained, then your decision

Rug Steam Cleaning

The machine made pieces in a pocket house take extraction: the outdoor room rug, whatever sits near the pool gate, and the synthetic where wet feet come through.

For machine made pieces the wand is correct, and quick, which suits something in constant use beside a pool gate. Anywhere near hand knotted work it is the wrong tool. Route is decided rug by rug. We would rather explain that distinction than quietly quote the larger job.

  • Right for machine made pieces
  • Quick where speed helps
  • Wrong tool for knotted work

Rug Dry Cleaning

A fine antique, having failed its dye test, never sees the tank. Compounds carry it instead, taken through the piece in measured sections while it stays completely dry.

Believing the rug, rather than the schedule or the invoice, is the whole discipline on a piece of this value. In the pocket it arises roughly twice a year and always on evidence. In the pocket it is uncommon and always evidence led. Nothing about the attention drops away on the other road.

  • For unstable dye and old weave
  • A section at a time, controlled
  • The rug decides, not the schedule

Water Damage Restoration

A vanity hose fails, or an appliance lets go in a laundry. With water on three sides a valuable pocket rug is saturated fast and found late.

River air, keeping this pocket humid year round, works on a soaked rug while the surface still appears intact and the base weave surrenders first. Phone at once. Note the hours. Examination follows on arrival, and a finished piece is named to you immediately rather than later.

  • The following days settle it
  • Dried, then washed, in order
  • A plain verdict before spending

Mould Rug Cleaning

Storage, in a pocket this humid, is where most of it begins. The other version is the grey band beneath a cabinet standing in one spot since the house was furnished.

Establishment, occurring in the base of the pile, makes any surface treatment pointless. Antimicrobial immersion lifts the growth and its food together, and the piece stays on our drying floor until nothing damp remains. In a pocket this humid, storage is where most of it begins.

  • Lifted from the base up
  • Antimicrobial wash and rinse
  • Held until nothing damp remains

Rug Moth Treatment

On a large pocket rug the still parts are extensive, beneath a sideboard and along a wall behind the seating, which puts the damage a long way from anyone's eye.

The moths in the room, being the visible end of a much longer cycle, are the least of it. Immersion removes every stage in a single pass. Storage guidance, written for the piece rather than generic, travels back with it. Any loss suffered before collection is put in front of you without softening.

  • Every stage of the cycle
  • Eggs and casings taken out
  • Frank about damage already done

Stain Protection

The last treatment, optional but worth taking on a valuable piece, is a protectant. Invisible afterwards, it keeps liquid sitting on the surface rather than travelling into the fibre.

On a rug anchoring the main room of a pocket house and hosting every gathering in it, that moment is worth a great deal. Colour, handle and the way the pile falls are untouched. For a piece of real value it repays its cost immediately.

  • Applied at the end of the wash
  • Colour and handle untouched
  • Worth it on a piece of value

Three Fig Tree Pocket markers

One enormous fig, a river loop and a school from 1871

A pocket the river made, and the city never got around to changing.

The fig tree said to shelter 400

The suburb is named for one enormous Moreton Bay fig.

A suburb named for one remarkable tree understands keeping remarkable things. That is our trade: fine rugs washed by hand so they last another generation.

The pocket the river makes

Water on three sides, and no through traffic at all.

Streets that go nowhere suit our pickup runs exactly. The driver comes to the door, collects the rolled rug, and the suburb goes back to being quiet.

The school open since 1871

Fig Tree Pocket State School has taught the pocket for more than 150 years.

A school this old means families this settled, and settled families hold onto good rugs. We have washed the west's inherited wool and Persian pieces for 29 years.

Dog smell improved in Fig Tree Pocket

Damp rug refreshed in Fig Tree Pocket
Our wool rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. The rug needed a clean that matched how much use it gets. They were practical about what marks might remain. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away. The storage smell was the reason I stopped trying home fixes for this wool rug. The service took the awkward part of the job off our hands.

Good to know

Fig Tree Pocket questions, answered straight

How is a rug from the pocket priced?

Pricing, being a function of the rug itself, waits on an inspection. Size, fibre, weave, and state all move the number. Once quoted the price holds, both journeys ride the western day, and a piece that does not warrant professional washing is called at inspection.

Who handles it once it leaves the house?

Custody, which on a piece like this matters as much as method, rests with our own crew throughout, from your front door through the wash floor and back. No subcontractor sits in the chain, and the rug is not passed between operators at any point.

Can hand knotted silk or fine wool be washed safely?

Silk and fine wool, handled slowly and dye tested beforehand, come through it safely. The wash runs at the level of acidity the fibre wants and every stage is done by hand. Machinery, not water, is the real hazard, and no machine touches knotted work here.

The dog urinated on a Persian. Is it recoverable?

Recovery, in most cases, is entirely possible, and you get the honest reading rather than a hopeful one. Urine reaches the foundation, so a spray only quietens it between humid spells. Immersion pulls the residue out of the base and enzymes clear the salts.

Do Kenmore, Chapel Hill and Indooroopilly share the day?

Those three, sharing the western day with this pocket, go on one stop, so households minutes apart send rugs together. Every rug beyond the opening one is $20 off, which is why bookings in the pocket cover the whole house.

Is a faster turnaround available?

A faster option, priced above standard, does exist. A 48 hour alternative exists, carrying a small premium over standard. The standard path takes roughly seven days, and the rug comes back dry through the weave.
