The surf end of the city

What the southern beaches put into a rug

What the swell sends inland

No stretch of the Gold Coast is more exposed than the run from Nobby Beach and Miami down through Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Currumbin to Kirra and Coolangatta. Southeast swell throws salt spray three streets back from the beach for most of the year, and the sand goes everywhere the kids and the dog go. Salt holds moisture and slowly dulls the colour of wool, and sunscreen and damp-towel traffic sit on top of the lot.

Sand settles at the base of the pile and cuts wool fibre every time someone walks across it.

The wash that undoes a summer

None of that responds to a surface clean. The rug comes back to our Yatala facility, is dusted to shake the sand out, then fully immersed so the salt dissolves and rinses away with everything else the summer left behind. It dries flat in a controlled room rather than a salty breeze, and most owners are surprised how much colour returns.

Every suburb sends a different rug

Burleigh's renovated originals, the lake homes at Burleigh Waters and Varsity Lakes, the fibro cottages at Miami and Palm Beach mid-renovation, the brick family loops of Elanora and Currumbin Waters: each sends us a slightly different rug, and each is assessed on its own condition first. The quote is firm, the advice is straight, and if a rug is not worth the spend we say so before you commit.

One run to the border

The southern run is one planned M1 trip to the border, so Coolangatta is never an afterthought, and Tweed Heads and Tweed Heads South are on the same day; the border makes no difference to how a rug is collected or washed. Downsizers at that end of the run often hold the best wool rugs we see all week, pieces that have moved house three times, and they get hand washing, a 29 year eye, and the 48-hour re-wash guarantee behind every job.

MiamiBurleigh HeadsPalm BeachCoolangattawith Tweed Heads on the same day

That is the southern day, top to border. Pickup and delivery are free on the scheduled runs, and the rug is usually home, completely dry, in 7 days.

Rug Cleaning Southern Gold Coast

The full southern service: sand dusted from the base of the pile, salt dissolved in a full immersion hand wash at Yatala, then controlled drying and a groom. Free pickup on the border run, with inspection and a firm quote first.

A southern rug can hold cups of sand without looking dirty, and that sand is sharpening itself against the wool every day. Dusting gets the bulk, immersion gets the rest. The difference underfoot is immediate.

  • Beach-house and family rugs
  • Sand out, salt dissolved
  • Firm quote before pickup

Rug Washing Southern Gold Coast

Full immersion washing for surf-town wool: submerged at Yatala, hand worked, rinsed until the salt reads zero, dried flat in a controlled room. Colour that faded over three summers usually comes back in one wash.

Salt dulls wool by holding a film of moisture and grime through the pile, and only dissolving it lifts it. That is chemistry, not marketing: wool washed clean of salt reflects light the way it did in the showroom.

  • Salt rinsed to zero
  • Colour genuinely returns
  • Dried flat, fully through
Most popular

Stain Removal

Zinc cream on a Burleigh lounge rug, cordial at a Currumbin Waters birthday, coffee in a Kirra holiday unit. Fibre first, dyes tested, then the right chemistry, and an honest word on any mark that will only soften.

Sunscreen and zinc are the southern specials: oily, bonded and worked in by feet. They respond to proper treatment and a full wash far better than to scrubbing, which mostly spreads them. Bring the rug in before fighting it.

  • Zinc, sunscreen, food and wine
  • Oily marks treated properly
  • Honest calls on old stains

Pet Stain and Odour

The dog swims at the creek, dries on the rug and occasionally does worse. Accidents reach the foundation where sprays never go. Enzymes digest the source, then the immersion wash removes it, along with the wet-dog base note.

Beach-dog rugs carry a compound smell: salt water, skin oils and the odd accident, layered over months. One enzyme soak and full wash clears the whole history, and the rug comes back neutral instead of masked.

  • Swimming dogs and accidents
  • The whole smell history cleared
  • Neutral, not perfumed over

Odour Removal

Holiday units at Coolangatta collect guest smells, beach houses collect damp-towel must, and rugs archive it all. We neutralise odours during the wash itself and return the rug smelling of nothing at all.

A rug is the biggest air filter in the room and it never gets emptied. The full immersion wash is the emptying: what the fibre held is released, rinsed away and dried out of the story. Fresh is the default again.

  • Guest, damp and towel smells
  • The rug's archive emptied
  • Nothing masked, all removed

Rug Spot Cleaning

A single fresh mark can often be spot treated, and when the rest of the rug is genuinely clean we say so and charge accordingly. If a summer of sand rides underneath, we show you why the full wash is the honest answer.

The southern catch: rugs here are rarely otherwise clean. Sand does not show the way a stain does, and a spot-cleaned patch on a salt-dulled rug advertises the difference. The inspection settles it before you spend.

  • Fresh marks on clean rugs
  • Checked against the sand load
  • The cheaper option when true

Rug Steam Cleaning

Lake-estate synthetics at Varsity Lakes and hard-working family rugs at Elanora stand up to hot-water extraction: proper heat, proper agitation, a full rinse. Old wool from the Tugun cottages never sees the machine.

Construction decides method. Machine-made and latex-backed rugs are engineered for extraction; hand-knotted and older wool pieces are not, and they go to the immersion floor. We check before we choose, every time.

  • Lake-estate and family synthetics
  • Deep sanitising extraction
  • Old wool stays hand washed

Rug Dry Cleaning

The design-conscious end of Burleigh buys viscose and bamboo silk, and both punish wet cleaning with watermarks and stiffness. Low-moisture dry cleaning lifts the soil safely and keeps the finish even.

If the rug came from a boutique and the fibre feels silky, treat it as fragile until proven otherwise. We identify the fibre first and choose accordingly. When water is the wrong tool, it stays in the tap.

  • Viscose and boutique pieces
  • No watermarks, even finish
  • Fibre proven before method

Water Damage Restoration

East-coast lows drive rain sideways into southern homes, and a soaked rug starts deteriorating in days. We collect fast on the border run, rinse, sanitise and dry the rug under control before mould and browning take hold.

Salt-laden storm water is doubly unkind: the damp feeds mould and the salt holds the damp. A fresh-water rinse and controlled dry break the cycle. Call as soon as the water stops and keep the rug flat until we arrive.

  • Storm and leak soakings
  • Fast border-run collection
  • Fresh rinse breaks the salt cycle

Mould Rug Cleaning

Humid beach summers grow mould in rugs that never quite dry, usually under furniture in a closed holiday unit. We kill the spores in full immersion, lift what the dyes allow, and dry the rug beyond mould's reach.

A unit locked up for the off-season is a mould incubator, and the rug is the first casualty. If the place smells musty on reopening day, send the rug in early. Caught at the smell stage, it almost always washes out.

  • Holiday-unit and under-rug mould
  • Spores killed in the wash
  • Reopening-day rescues common

Rug Moth Treatment

The best wool rugs on this coast live with downsizers at Coolangatta and Tweed Heads, often in quiet rooms. Moths know it. We treat the eggs and larvae, wash the residue from the wool, and protect what three house moves preserved.

A rug that has been in the family for decades deserves better than becoming larvae food in a still corner. Rotate it, vacuum under it, and if it is resting long term, have it treated and wrapped. We help with all three.

  • Heirloom and downsizer wool
  • Cleared and fully washed
  • Long-term care advice given

Stain Protection

Applied fresh after the wash, protection keeps the next zinc smear or juice cup sitting on the fibre long enough to blot. For surf-club families, that margin gets used weekly.

Protection will not stop sand, but it wins you the first minute of every liquid accident, and beach-house rugs collect plenty. Invisible on the rug, obvious in the results, applied while the fibre is perfectly clean.

  • For surf-club households
  • Wins the first minute back
  • Applied straight after washing

Surf towns on the run

Six southern landmarks we drive past

From the Superbank to the pirate ship, this is the coastline our southern run follows.

Snapper Rocks and the Superbank

The sand-bottom point at Rainbow Bay that starts one of the longest waves on earth.

Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay apartments live with sand and salt in every fibre; those rugs book onto our border-end run and come back washed, not just vacuumed hard.

Kirra Point

The most famous barrel on the Gold Coast, guarded by a surf club that dates to 1916.

Kirra and Bilinga's older beach cottages hold decades of southern-end life, and their wool rugs respond to a proper wash like nothing else we collect.

Currumbin Alley and Elephant Rock

The learner-friendly wave at the mouth of Currumbin Creek, beside the rock that hosts Anzac dawn services.

Currumbin and Currumbin Waters family homes are creek-and-beach households; sand and wet-dog rugs from these streets are standing cargo on our southern run.

David Fleay Wildlife Park, West Burleigh

The wildlife park founded by the first person ever to breed a platypus in captivity.

West Burleigh and Burleigh Waters sit just off our route down the M1, so pickups here add minutes, not hours, to the southern day.

Tallebudgera Creek

The clear-water estuary between Burleigh's headland and Palm Beach, voted Australia's best swimming spot in 2019.

The homes either side of the creek at Burleigh and Palm Beach send us the classic southern-coast rug: creek sand below the pile, salt through the wool, both gone after a full immersion wash.

Palm Beach Parklands and the Pirate Park

The parkland at Currumbin Creek's mouth, rebuilt around its landmark pirate-ship playground.

Palm Beach and Elanora are family-and-dog suburbs midway down our southern run, and the parklands' sand-and-salt lifestyle is exactly what we wash out of their rugs.

Good to know

Southern Gold Coast rug questions, answered straight

Do you cover Burleigh, Palm Beach, Currumbin and Coolangatta?

All of them, on one planned southern run: Nobby Beach, Miami, Burleigh Heads, Burleigh Waters, Varsity Lakes, Palm Beach, Elanora, Currumbin, Currumbin Waters, Tugun, Bilinga, Kirra and Coolangatta, with Tweed Heads over the border on the same day. Pickup and delivery are free.

We are in Tweed Heads. Does the border change anything?

No. Tweed Heads and Tweed Heads South book onto the same southern run as Coolangatta. Same free pickup and delivery on scheduled runs, same Yatala wash, same 7 day turnaround.

The rug crunches when we walk on it. Is it ruined?

Probably not. That crunch is beach sand sitting at the base of the pile. It cuts fibre slowly, so it is worth acting on, but dusting and immersion washing remove it completely, and the rug feels new underfoot again.

The dog swims every morning and had an accident on the rug. Can both problems go?

Yes, in one wash. The swimming builds up salt, oils and wet-dog smell through the pile, and urine from the accident sits deeper, in the foundation. Enzyme treatment digests the urine at its source, then the full immersion wash removes the lot. The rug comes back neutral.

Can washing bring the colour back to a salt-dulled wool rug?

Very often, yes. Salt dulls wool by holding a film of moisture and grime through the pile. Dissolving and rinsing that out is exactly what immersion washing does, and the colour change on delivery day speaks for itself.

Mum is downsizing at Coolangatta and her good wool rug needs care. Can you help?

That is a job we take seriously. Older wool rugs are usually the best made rugs in the house. We inspect, quote firmly, wash by hand, and it comes with our 48-hour re-wash guarantee: anything off, tell us within 48 hours of delivery.
