Rug washing Palm Beach, across a century of front doors

Two creeks, one long beach, 16,349 people

Palm Beach runs between Tallebudgera Creek at its northern end and Currumbin Creek at its southern one, with the Coral Sea on the east and the Pacific Motorway forming the western edge. Six point three square kilometres, an elevation of six metres, and a population that grew from 14,654 at the 2016 census to 16,349 in 2021, which makes it one of the larger suburbs on this end of the coast. What matters to us is that the suburb is long and thin and faces the open sea for its whole length, so there is no sheltered half. Sea air reaches the streets beside the motorway as surely as it reaches the ones behind the dunes. Elanora and Currumbin Waters sit inland and south, Burleigh Heads north, and the whole group shares one scheduled run day.

A cottage from 1925 and a house from last year hand you the same rug problem in different words.

Fibro, brick and glass on the same street

This is the clearest gentrification story on the southern coast, and you can read it block by block. Fibro and weatherboard cottages from the original 1920s land sales still stand next to brand-new builds and small apartment developments, often within sight of each other. That range is the whole reason this page exists. An inherited wool rug in a cottage that has never been rebuilt has different tolerances from a large modern piece bought last spring to fill an open living space, and treating them identically would be the easy mistake. Every piece is read on arrival for fibre, construction, age and dye stability before anything is decided. The wash then gets built around what the rug can take, not around what the invoice would prefer.

A suburb that keeps up appearances

Palm Beach has been named Queensland's cleanest beach three separate times, in 1999, 2000 and again in 2011, which is not luck and not a single lucky inspection. It reflects consistent management of the same stretch of sand, on a beach the local surf club has patrolled since 1930. That habit of upkeep runs indoors too, and it is the reason people here tend to wash rugs rather than replace them. The load itself is ordinary for this coast and relentless: fine blown sand working below the pile surface, salt staying behind in the yarn as crystals, and summer humidity slowing every drying process in the house. Immersion washing removes both loads from the foundation in one pass, and the controlled drying room finishes the piece so it arrives back genuinely dry rather than nearly dry.

Rug Cleaning Palm Beach

Six point three square kilometres between two creek mouths, and open sea along the whole eastern edge. Every decade of housing here shares the same salt supply.

A 1920s cottage and a 2020s build take in exactly the same sea air, and their rugs end up with the same load in the foundation. The difference is what the fibre can stand, which is settled at inspection. From there the rug is immersed whole, rinsed until the water runs clear and dried in a controlled room.

  • Rolled at the front door
  • Fibre read before the figure
  • Immersed whole, never sectioned

Rug Washing Palm Beach

Immersion washing sized for what these streets own: inherited wool in the old cottages, and large modern pieces bought to fill a new open living room.

The suburb's oldest rugs have taken a century of coastal air between them and the newest have taken a summer. Both need the same thing and need it at different strengths. The bath is mixed to the fibre and the age, the rinse continues until nothing further lifts, and the drying room finishes the job properly.

  • One bath, sized to the rug
  • Strength set by age and fibre
  • Rinsed until nothing lifts
Most popular

Stain Removal

Sunscreen on pale wool, red wine on a Sunday, salt water wrung out of a wetsuit onto the nearest floor covering. Testing comes before treatment.

Sunscreen is the local speciality, and it is harder work than owners expect because the oils bind into the fibre instead of sitting on top of it. The test decides the approach and the outcome is put in plain words afterwards: out, or improved. A rug that could not come through a treatment does not get given one.

  • Tested before anything else
  • Dye stability checked first
  • Plain words on the result

Pet Stain and Odour

A dog straight off the beach and a rug just inside the door. Whatever soaks in reaches the backing, so the treatment has to work at that level.

Beach households run their dogs hard and the rug nearest the entry pays for it every summer. Surface products fade within days because the material making the smell is below the pile. The bath moves it out through the foundation, enzymes deal with what caused it, and the piece is fully dry before it comes back.

  • Cleared at the foundation
  • Enzyme stage on the cause
  • Fully dry before delivery

Odour Removal

The closed-up note in a cottage shut for a fortnight, or the seaside staleness a rug picks up after a summer of open doors and wet swimmers.

Old timber cottages and new sealed homes produce the smell differently and hold it the same way, at the base of the pile. Bathing dissolves what the odour is bound to and the rinse water takes it off the premises. No scent goes on afterwards, since perfume over a coastal odour lasts a fortnight at best.

  • Bound odour dissolved out
  • Carried off in the rinse
  • Returned without perfume

Rug Spot Cleaning

One mark on a sound rug can often be handled where it lies, which keeps a large piece in the house and keeps the job small.

Restraint is most of the skill. Scrub a mark and the edge spreads while the pile crushes, and the light shows that difference for years. We test, work gently and groom the area back into line. Where local work will not do it safely, you get told, and the decision about a full wash stays yours.

  • Kept in the room where possible
  • Nothing applied untested
  • The call stays with you

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction for the pieces that work hardest: the runner past the laundry, the mat at the back steps, the second living room rug.

Machine-made construction handles steam and dries fast, which suits a household with kids in and out of the surf all summer. It is entirely wrong for hand knotted wool. Construction chooses the method here, the choice is explained, and the bigger process is never recommended simply because it sounds more thorough.

  • Suited to machine-made rugs
  • Fast when the house needs it
  • Kept off knotted wool

Rug Dry Cleaning

Low moisture cleaning for pieces water would damage: unstable colours from an older weave, or a backing that has gone papery in a cottage by the sea.

Some of the wool in the original cottages predates the houses around it, and its colours were never fully fixed. A swab tells us in seconds. Compound work is slow, sectioned and reserved for exactly those pieces, on the principle that doing less is the more skilful answer when a weave is fragile.

  • For unstable older colour
  • Slow, sectioned, careful
  • Doing less on purpose

Water Damage Restoration

A storm surge under a low door, a burst hose in a laundry, a creek-side flood in the wrong week. On a soaked rug the first day matters most.

Say what the water was when you ring, because sea water is harder on wool than clean water and the opening move differs. Drying and stabilising happen first and the bath waits until the rug is safe. Where a piece stands is explained before anybody commits to restoring it, whatever its sentimental value.

  • Call while it is still wet
  • Stabilised, dried, then washed
  • Position explained upfront

Mould Rug Cleaning

Grey bloom under a bed in an old cottage, or a musty patch where a cabinet has not shifted since the last renovation.

Coastal humidity plus a dark corner is the entire recipe, and it takes hold underneath where nobody thinks to look. The treated bath removes the growth and what fed it in one pass, the rinse clears the rest, and the controlled room takes out the moisture that allowed it. Caught early, a rug loses nothing.

  • Underside treated properly
  • Antimicrobial bath and rinse
  • The moisture removed too

Rug Moth Treatment

Moth grubs work on wool in still corners, behind a wardrobe or along a skirting board, and old cottages have plenty of both.

Damage is discovered a season after it starts, without exception. One treated bath ends the whole cycle and washes out the casings and grub dust so the true loss can finally be seen. Cottage households that keep spare wool in a linen press get the storage conversation as well, because a shut cupboard through a mild winter is where nearly all of it begins.

  • The whole cycle ended
  • Debris washed out entirely
  • Winter storage explained

Stain Protection

The last thing a Palm Beach rug gets before it is rolled is a clear finish. It works by delay, which in a house full of sandy children is worth buying.

The finish changes nothing you can see or feel and costs the rug none of its handle. What it does is hold a spill nearer the surface for a while, so the difference between a mark and a memory becomes how fast somebody reaches the cloth. On pale wool in a beach house that is worth having.

  • Goes on after the wash
  • No change to look or feel
  • Delay, plainly described

Three Palm Beach stories

An afternoon in 1922, three clean-beach titles and two schools

A suburb that filled fast and has kept itself up ever since.

The estate that sold in under three hours

Land sales for the Palm Beach Estate opened in December 1922 and 120 allotments went in less than three hours.

A place that sold itself out in an afternoon a century ago has never really slowed down, and the rugs that have passed through those original allotments since carry a hundred years of coastal living between them.

Three times the cleanest beach in Queensland

Keep Australia Beautiful Council named this beach Queensland's cleanest in 1999, 2000 and again in 2011.

A beach kept to that standard says a good deal about how the suburb treats upkeep generally. It is the same standard people here expect when they hand a rug over: done properly, not tidied up.

The high school that arrived first

Palm Beach-Currumbin State High opened on 24 January 1972, and the primary school followed on 4 February 1974.

A suburb that needed a high school before a primary school grew up in a hurry and kept going. Its rugs now span nearly a century of housing, and that range is exactly what our assessment is built to handle.

Good to know

Palm Beach questions, answered plainly

How is a Palm Beach rug priced?

By what it is and what state it is in, which is why nothing is quoted before the rug has been looked at properly. Size, fibre and condition set the number, the number then holds, and pickup and return are already included in it. A piece that is not worth the work gets named as such.

Our rug came with the cottage and nobody knows how old it is. Can you tell us?

Usually a good deal about it, yes. Construction, fibre, dye behaviour and wear pattern say plenty even without provenance, and old wool in these original cottages is common enough that we see it regularly. You get an honest reading of what a wash will recover and what age has taken permanently.

Is a new rug from a new build any different to wash?

Different, yes, easier, not always. Modern pieces often mix wool with viscose or polypropylene in the same weave, and those fibres behave differently in water. The test at inspection settles the method, which is why a first wash on a newer rug is worth doing properly rather than cheaply.

The dog urinated on the rug by the back door. Will it come out?

Most of the time, and how far the urine travelled decides the rest. It passes through the pile and sits in the backing, so anything applied on top is treating the wrong layer. The bath washes that layer clean, enzymes handle the source, and any staining left in the dye is described at inspection.

Do you collect from Elanora, Currumbin Waters and Burleigh Heads too?

Yes, and Currumbin and Tallebudgera with them. They all sit on the same southern run day as Palm Beach, so neighbouring households can send rugs together, and each rug after the first is $20 off.

How long does it take, and is there a faster option?

Standard turnaround is about 7 days. A 48-hour express service is available at additional cost when a date genuinely cannot move. In both cases the rug is dried right through in the controlled room before delivery, which matters more in summer here than most people realise.
