Inside Mermaid Beach, on the map

Rug washing Nobby Beach, one street back from the sand

A strip with no border of its own

The council's register of gazetted suburbs and localities does not carry Nobby Beach at all. What it carries is Mermaid Beach, and this strip is the southern end of that, held between Mermaid Beach proper to the north and Miami to the south, with the Pacific in front and the Mermaid Waters canals immediately behind. That is why no separate population figure exists for it and why we will not quote one. What does exist is a short, tightly held run of streets where the walk from the sand to a front door is a matter of metres. Every home along here is hard floored, so rugs carry the softening and the traffic in the same rooms, and they carry the beach in with them. Two suburbs claim the ground on either side. The sand does not distinguish between them.

Two answers to its own name after a century, and not one grain of sand less in the rugs.

Bought to keep rather than to flip

The housing here is a mix that suits us: older beachfront units and low-rise blocks left over from the strip's mid-century holiday years, sitting beside renovated houses that trade on being one street back from the water. It is a quieter address than Broadbeach or Surfers by deliberate choice, and it tends to be bought and held rather than turned over. That shows up in the rugs. Wool along this strip is often older, often better made, and often worth washing properly rather than replacing with something newer and thinner. A piece that has held its colour and its handle for thirty years in a salt-air flat has already proved what it is made of. Our part is to say honestly what a wash will bring back, and what age has taken for good.

Metres from the sand, and it shows

Salt spray and blown sand travel the same short distance here that they travel anywhere on the coast, except that here there is almost nothing in the way. Fishing gear, wetsuits and sandy towels come through the same doorways week after week, and beachfront units take the load twice over because they sit high and open to the wind. Sand is the abrasive half of the problem, sitting below the surface of the pile and cutting fibre with every step. Salt is the chemical half, staying in the yarn as crystals long after the water has gone. Immersion washing is the process that reaches both, because it moves them out of the foundation instead of pushing them further into it. The rug then dries flat in a controlled room, so it comes back to a humid flat already finished rather than still working.

Rug Cleaning Nobby Beach

One row of shopfronts, two larger suburbs either side, and open surf at the end of every road. Sand reaches a Nobby Beach rug faster than most owners believe.

The strip is narrow enough that the walk from sand to front door is measured in metres, so nothing falls off on the way. Grit settles under the pile where a vacuum head has never once reached it. Only a full bath floats it clear of the weave, and only a proper dry keeps it out.

  • Collected at the unit door
  • Read before any figure
  • Grit floated out of the weave

Rug Washing Nobby Beach

Washing matched to what this strip actually owns: wool bought decades ago for a beach flat, and better pieces that arrived with a renovation one street back.

Salt does not evaporate out of wool. It stays behind as crystals in the yarn, sharp and quietly abrasive, and every footstep grinds them against the fibre. A whole-rug bath at the acidity that fibre wants dissolves them, and the rinse water carries them off the property with us.

  • The whole rug in one bath
  • Acidity chosen per fibre
  • Salt dissolved out of the yarn
Most popular

Stain Removal

Zinc off a surfer's face, fish blood from the point, a coffee ring beside the door. Every mark is identified before a single product touches it.

There are two honest answers on any mark, and we would rather give ours before we start than afterwards. A test tells us whether the dye is stable and whether the mark is resting on the fibre or living inside it. What lifts, lifts. What will only improve is described in exactly those words.

  • Fibre named before treatment
  • Dye tested every time
  • Two honest outcomes only

Pet Stain and Odour

A wet dog back from the point, a hall rug just inside the door, and one accident nobody found for a day. Urine goes straight through to the backing.

A supermarket spray works at the top of the pile and the problem is sitting underneath it, which is why the smell returns on the first humid morning. Bathing the rug flushes the backing itself, an enzyme stage settles what caused the odour, and the piece is dried completely before it comes home.

  • Flushed through the backing
  • Enzymes on the source
  • Dried out before it returns

Odour Removal

The shut-up smell a beach flat picks up between visits, or the stale, salty note a rug carries after a summer with the balcony doors open.

Warm rooms and sea air make a smell of their own, and it settles at the base of the pile rather than on the surface. Washing dissolves whatever the odour is attached to and the rinse removes it. Nothing is added afterwards, because a perfumed rug on this strip announces itself within a week.

  • The cause washed away
  • Rinsed out at the base
  • No fragrance added after

Rug Spot Cleaning

A single mark on a rug that is otherwise sound often does not justify a full wash, and saying so costs you less than not saying it.

The instinct is to rub, and rubbing is what ruins the ground around a mark. The pile opens up, the edge travels outward, and on viscose the crushing never lifts again. We test, work lightly and groom the area back afterwards. Where a local job will not finish it, that is the answer you get.

  • Handled in the room
  • Tested before treatment
  • Told plainly when it needs more

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction suits the hard-working machine-made pieces on this strip: a runner in a unit hallway, the rug under a holiday-let dining table.

Synthetic construction takes steam well and comes back quickly, which is what a let flat between bookings actually needs. It is the wrong process anywhere near hand knotted wool or silk. Construction picks the method, the reasoning is explained out loud, and nobody is quoted the larger job by default.

  • Right for machine-made pieces
  • Quick between bookings
  • Never used on knotted wool

Rug Dry Cleaning

Low moisture work for pieces that will not meet water: colours that shift on a test swab, or a foundation gone brittle after decades in a beachfront flat.

One colour moving on a swab settles the question in seconds. Compound cleaning is slower, done section by section, and called for rarely, which is precisely why it is worth keeping available. On an old piece the skilful answer is usually to do less, since colour taken out of a weave never comes back.

  • Chosen on the swab result
  • Worked in small sections
  • Held for fragile pieces

Water Damage Restoration

A burst hose at a balcony tap, storm water through a sliding door, or a leak down from the flat above. The first day decides most of the outcome.

Ring while the rug is still wet and say what soaked it, because sea water, tank water and clean tap water each want a different opening move. Stabilising and drying come before any bath at all. Whether the piece is worth restoring is put to you plainly, before you have committed to a thing.

  • Ring us the same day
  • Stabilised and dried first
  • A verdict before any spend

Mould Rug Cleaning

Grey shadow under a sideboard that has not moved since the renovation, or a musty edge on a rug left in a closed-up flat over winter.

Sea air holds moisture against a floor for weeks together, and anything that never fully dries begins to grow underneath. Treated water takes the growth and the residue feeding it away in the same pass, the rinse clears whatever remains, and the controlled room removes the damp that started it. Early cases finish whole.

  • Treated at the underside
  • Antimicrobial bath and rinse
  • The damp removed as well

Rug Moth Treatment

Grubs eat wool where nobody looks, along a wall line or under a bed, and a flat shut up over winter hands them months of quiet.

By the time anyone notices, the damage is a season old. One treated bath ends every stage of the cycle at once and washes out the casings and dust the grubs leave behind. Only then does the real loss become visible. Storage is discussed before the rug goes back into a quiet room.

  • Every stage closed at once
  • Casings washed away
  • Storage covered before return

Stain Protection

A clear finish goes on at the end of the bath. It buys time, which on pale wool in a small flat is usually all anybody needs.

The finish repels nothing. It slows the journey from the surface down into the foundation, so a knocked glass stays reachable while somebody finds a cloth. Handle, colour and sheen are untouched by it. On wool this old that matters rather more than the protection itself.

  • Applied at the end of the bath
  • No change to the handle
  • Time is what it buys

Three Nobby Beach stories

A chairlift, an accessible beach and an unsettled name

A strip that has been a destination longer than it has been an address.

The chairlift that grew into a castle

A 1962 chairlift up North Nobby Hill became Magic Mountain, an amusement park that ran on the headland for three decades.

People have been walking up and down that headland for beach, view and once a chairlift for well over sixty years. The rugs in the flats and houses below carry that much beach traffic, weekend after weekend.

The beach built for everyone to reach

Matting runs onto the sand and access platforms are built for wheelchair users, making this one of the coast's genuinely accessible beaches.

An accessible, well-used local beach means these households are in and out of the surf all year rather than at holidays. That steady traffic is the sand and salt problem we answer at the facility rather than at the door.

A name nobody has ever settled

Local memory splits between a grazier's missing bullock and the small headland once known as The Nobbies.

A stretch of coast that grew up cottage by cottage and story by story rarely does anything by the book, and the rugs from those original flats are the same. Each one gets read on its own terms.

Careful natural fibre clean in Nobby Beach
They collected it from Nobby Beach and were clear about the limits of natural fibres. The natural fibre rug needed care because jute and sisal do not forgive much. The rug is not new, but it has a bit of family history for us. The mark is softer and the rug feels usable again. It was good to have someone look at the whole rug rather than just the most obvious area. It was a relief to stop noticing the same problem every day.

Good to know

Nobby Beach questions, answered plainly

What does a Nobby Beach rug cost to wash?

The rug settles that, through its size, its fibre and the condition it arrives in, which is why the inspection comes before the number. Once quoted the figure holds, with the driver's two trips already counted inside it. Where a wash would cost more than the rug gives back, we name that rather than take the job.

How often should a rug this close to the sand be washed?

More often than most owners assume. On a strip where the front door is metres from the beach, a year is a long time between baths for anything in a living room or hallway. Bedroom pieces can usually stretch further. We would rather look at the rug and tell you than sell you a schedule.

Can you collect from a unit block or a beachfront lobby?

Yes, and blocks along this strip are a routine stop rather than a special arrangement. Tell us the building name at booking. Where a service lift or a loading bay window has to be arranged, it gets arranged first, so nobody is standing downstairs working it out on the day.

The dog urinated on the hall rug after a swim. Can the smell be fixed?

Usually, and how far it went in decides how much of it comes out. Urine passes the pile and rests in the backing, which is why anything sprayed on the surface only masks it for a few days. The bath flushes the backing, enzymes finish the chemistry, and any colour change is described at inspection rather than discovered later.

Do you also collect from Miami, Mermaid Beach and Burleigh Heads?

Yes, all three run on the same scheduled day as Nobby Beach, along with Mermaid Waters and Burleigh Waters behind them. Rugs from more than one address can travel together on that day, and every rug after the first is $20 off.

How long will the rug be gone, and can it be faster?

About 7 days is the standard turnaround here. When a date will not shift at all, the 48-hour express service exists and costs more, which we say plainly rather than burying it. Whichever you pick, the rug leaves our drying room finished right down to the foundation, not just dry to the touch.
