A straight quote for Kirra units and apartments
Every rug is measured and read before it is priced, whether it belongs to a letting or to somebody who has lived here thirty years. The figure holds, and a piece that is finished is named as finished.

Rug washing Kirra, above the point
An address the suburb list does not carry
Kirra is not one of the City of Gold Coast's gazetted suburbs or localities. It is a beach-side neighbourhood inside the gazetted suburb of Coolangatta, named for Kirra Hill, which stands 27 metres above sea level and first appeared on an 1883 survey plan. We would rather state that plainly than invent a boundary, and it makes no practical difference to the work: the streets are real, the buildings are real, and the address is a scheduled stop on our border-end day. Because Kirra has no separate census boundary, no population figure is claimed here. What can be said with confidence is that this stretch of coast faces southeast with nothing in front of it, and that its rugs carry the consequences.
Count the feet, not the years. A letting rug does a decade of ordinary wear in about three summers.
Low-rise blocks, newer towers, and constant turnover
This is holiday-unit and long-held-apartment territory rather than family-house territory. Low-rise blocks from the area's first tourism boom sit beside newer beachfront development, and the two kinds of owner want different things. Short-stay units run hard-wearing synthetics that need a fast, thorough answer between bookings. Long-term owners in the older blocks have wool bought decades ago that has quietly absorbed salt the whole time. What both share is traffic. A rug in a letting takes more feet in one summer than a family rug takes in three years, and every one of those feet has been on the sand first. That is why the rugs here go down faster than their owners expect, and why vacuuming between guests never quite keeps up. The practical upshot is that a rug here should be judged on how hard it has worked rather than on how old it is, and those two numbers are rarely the same.
Fifty minutes, and a coastline that never settles
Kirra shares its collection day with Coolangatta, about sixty-eight kilometres and fifty minutes from the wash floor. The sand here is not static either: this shoreline has been reworked deliberately more than once, which is a reasonable clue to how much sand moves through the streets behind it in a given year. At Yatala the rug is measured, its construction identified and its dyes swabbed, and then it goes into the bath in one piece and stays there until the water coming off it runs clean. The dryers finish it right through, rather than a balcony rail in a sea breeze, because a rug that goes back damp into a closed-up unit will smell before the next guest arrives. That is the entire reason the drying stage is not negotiable. Managers with several units in one block usually send the lot together, which is easier for the driver and cheaper for them, and it means the rugs come back on the same day rather than one at a time across a fortnight.

The Gold Coast office is a registered address on Computer Road at Yatala, standing next to the wash floor itself. Enquiries and quotes are taken there, and our own driver carries the rug north and returns it.

We carry it ourselves, both directions. Kirra is collected on the same day as Coolangatta, and the window is confirmed once the border-end run is scheduled.
A schoolhouse saved, a railway boom and a shoreline reworked twice
How a stretch of dune became a holiday town in barely two generations.
Kirra Hill Community and Cultural Centre opened in October 2011 inside the heritage-listed 1920 building that began as Coolangatta State School.
A hundred-year-old schoolroom that the local community fought to keep is exactly the kind of place pride we recognise. Some things are worth doing properly and keeping, rugs included.
The building on Kirra Hill was built as Coolangatta State School and opened on 2 October 1920, later becoming Coolangatta Special School in 1979 once the mainstream school's population outgrew the site. After the school moved on, the Queensland Government handed custodianship of the building to the City of Gold Coast in 2008 following community advocacy to save it, and a restoration project reopened it in October 2011 as the Kirra Hill Community and Cultural Centre, now home to an art gallery and community programs on the hill above the point.
The line that reached this coast in 1903 took visitor numbers from 6,880 to 16,520 passengers in little over a decade.
The older holiday units and long-held apartments here date from exactly that boom, and their rugs, several decades in, are usually well overdue for more than a vacuum.
Kirra and the beaches beside it barely registered with visitors before the railway reached this stretch of coast in 1903. Once it did, the growing popularity of surf bathing did the rest: passenger numbers on the line climbed from 6,880 in 1903 to 16,520 by 1914, and the first residential and business allotments went to auction in April 1914 to house the crowds the trains were bringing. By the 1950s the Kirra Beach Hotel, built in 1956, anchored a strip that had gone from empty dune to a proper holiday town in barely two generations.
The shoreline here has been reworked by government intervention twice, first by reclaiming swamp land in 1938, then by two groynes built from 1972.
A coastline this actively managed moves a great deal of sand through the streets behind it, and that is precisely the ground-in grit an immersion wash is built to take out of a rug's foundation.
In 1938 the Queensland Government sold reclaimed swamp land at Kirra for development, part of turning the point from tidal flat into buildable coast. Erosion became the bigger fight from the 1960s through 1974, driven by breakwater effects and weather, and the state's answer was engineering: a big groyne built in May 1972, followed later by a smaller one, both designed to hold sand against the point rather than let it wash away.

Kirra questions, answered plainly
How often should a holiday unit rug be washed?
More often than a household rug, because it does more work. A letting that turns over through summer will usually want a proper wash once a year, sometimes twice if it is a ground-floor unit close to the sand. Between washes, vacuuming helps with the surface but does not reach what is doing the damage.
What decides the price?
The rug itself. Size, fibre, construction and how much work it needs set the figure, so it is inspected before it is quoted rather than priced over the phone. Collection and delivery are inside the number, and the number holds once agreed.
Can you work around a booking calendar?
Usually. Tell us the gap between guests when you call and the collection gets planned into the border-end day. Where the window is very tight the 48-hour express option is available at additional cost, though the rug still goes back dry rather than merely dry to the touch.
A guest's dog left urine on the rug and we only found it at changeover. Is it too late?
Usually not, though the longer it sits the more work it becomes. Urine passes the pile in seconds and settles in the foundation, so cleaning the surface at changeover treats the wrong layer and the smell returns with the humidity. The bath reaches the foundation and enzymes remove what generates the odour.
Do you also collect from Coolangatta, Bilinga and Tugun?
Yes, all three sit on the same scheduled day as Kirra, with Currumbin a little further north on the same loop. Several units in one block can send rugs together, and every rug after the first is $20 off.
Is Kirra actually its own suburb?
Not officially. It is a beach-side neighbourhood inside the gazetted suburb of Coolangatta, named for Kirra Hill. We would rather say that than pretend otherwise, and it changes nothing about the service: the streets are on the run and the collection day is fixed.
