Farmhouse wool on this stretch of river takes in two things at once, fine river-flat soil carried in on boots and damp that sits in the air for weeks. We open the rug out flat and read the foundation before anything is wetted, then take it right through a bath, rinse until the water leaves clean, and dry it in conditions we set rather than ones the season hands us.

Soil does not sit politely on the surface of a pile. It travels down until it reaches the knots, and from there it works like grit against every fibre each time somebody walks across. Suction cannot lift it back out. Water can, once the rug is under it. Bath strength is decided by what the dyes and the backing will accept, established before the rug goes near the tank.

The dirt on this river bend is fine and strongly coloured, so it behaves less like a spill sitting on top and more like a pigment somebody has walked into the wool. We find out by testing how much the fibre and the surviving dye will bear, stay well inside it, and afterwards tell you which marks came away and which have joined the rug permanently.

An animal on a block this size picks a corner and keeps to it, which means urine builds up in one area of the foundation over months rather than spreading thin. Nothing sprayed on the pile reaches that far down. Immersion carries the deposit up and out, enzyme work then breaks apart the compounds that actually smell, and controlled drying stops the whole thing announcing itself again in the first humid week.

Smell is a substance bonded to the wool, not a layer resting on it, which is why hanging a rug over a fence in river air achieves close to nothing. A wash breaks that bond and the rinse takes away whatever it releases. We add no fragrance at any point, because scent laid over a smell simply leaves the household living with two of them instead of one.

Almost every spot that goes wrong does so through effort. Rubbing flattens the wool and pushes colour sideways into pile that was perfectly clean, and the soft pale ring left behind draws more attention than the spot ever did. We work out what is safe, keep the hand light, comb the surface back the way it lies, and say plainly when a mark sits too deep for this.

A farmhouse on this river usually holds one piece older than everything around it, and a share of those would not survive a bath intact. A swab on the reverse settles that in a minute. Where the answer is no, work happens section by section with a dry compound, and the result is slower and more modest. That is the trade for not risking colour nobody could put back.

With a household water failure the clock matters more than the volume. Wool left wet begins to smell inside a day or two and grows something a week later, so ring us as soon as you find it and say plainly where the water came from, because clean supply water and waste water lead to different work. Nothing is assessed until the rug is dry and stable, and that assessment carries no charge.

Air over these flats stays loaded for days on end, and while it does, nothing under a roof reaches genuine dryness. That is the whole condition growth needs. A treated bath removes what has grown and the film it settled into, both leave with the rinse water, and the drying room afterwards pulls out the standing moisture that let it start. Skip that stage and the whole thing returns.

What this buys on a working property is time, not immunity, and we describe it exactly that way. If a spill hesitates on the surface for sixty seconds, that is sixty seconds in which somebody with a cloth settles it before a drop reaches the knots underneath. That is the entire benefit.
