Farm country rugs carry two things at once. There is fine river-flat soil brought in on boots, and there is a base of damp the air puts into everything indoors and never takes out. Together they age wool considerably faster than either would alone. The rug comes out flat, we read the foundation and test how the dyes behave, and the wash is built around what those checks say.

Soil does not sit politely on top of a pile. It works down through the fibres until it reaches the knots, and once it is sitting there it cuts a little more every time weight crosses the rug. Nothing applied from above will lift it back up. A bath floats it free and the rinse carries it out, at a strength decided beforehand by what the dyes and the backing will take.

The dirt out here is fine-grained and carries its own colour, so what arrives on a rug behaves less like a spill and more like a pigment that has been walked in. Testing sets the limit the fibre and existing dye will stand, the work stays inside it, and the account we give afterwards separates what came out from what is now permanent.

On a property with land around it an animal picks one spot and returns to it, so urine gathers in a single part of the foundation over months rather than spreading thin. Nothing worked at the surface reaches that deep. Immersion carries the deposit up and out, enzymes then break apart what is producing the odour, and a controlled dry means it does not come back the first warm fortnight.

Odour is a substance chemically fixed to wool rather than a layer sitting on top of it, so a day on the line in valley air moves the problem not at all. Washing breaks the bond and the rinse removes what that releases. Nothing scented goes in at any stage, since covering a smell with a fragrance simply leaves a room carrying both of them.

What goes wrong at home is almost always force applied to a small area. Wool around the mark gets pressed flat, colour travels outward into fibre that was clean, and the soft-edged patch left behind draws attention the original never did. We work out what is safe, use a light hand, brush the surface back into its own direction, and say honestly when it sits deeper.

Anything built for the method dries fast and is underfoot again the same afternoon, which suits a house where the paddock door carries all the traffic. Put hand-knotted wool through it and the harm shows up years later, long past anyone tracing a cause. What the rug is made of settles the question, and we settle it out loud before starting.

A farmhouse in this valley usually holds one piece that predates everything around it, and a fair share of those would not come through immersion intact. Checking the reverse settles it quickly. Where water is out, compound applied section by section is what remains, and it will not achieve as much. We would rather explain that limit than gamble a rug on a bath.

What the water was counts for more than how much of it arrived. Supply water and waste water lead to two different jobs, so be specific about the source on the phone. Drying happens first regardless, because a saturated rug hides its own damage, and only once it is stable do we tell you what we are actually looking at. That opinion is free.

Air on a river flat holds damp for days and nothing indoors dries properly while it does, which is the entire requirement for growth. The bath deals with the colony, the rinse removes what fed it, and the drying room takes the water that made it possible. Miss that stage and the rug is back where it started inside a season.

Rooms that go months without anything in them being shifted are exactly what moths need in order to do real harm, and a farmhouse has more of them than a unit does. The bath deals with eggs, grubs and adults in one go, and the chewed fibre leaves with the rinse. Only once all of that is out of the way can the size of the loss be measured honestly.

On a property like this the purchase is time and not protection. Liquid sits on the surface a while instead of dropping through, and that pause is usually all somebody needs to fetch a cloth and finish it.
