An honest quote for a country town's rugs
Country towns judge a service on whether it turns up and whether the figure holds. The rug is read on our floor, the quote comes out of that reading, and it stays where it was set.

Rug washing Canungra, over the range and back
A hinterland town that everything has to reach
Canungra is a valley town of 29.8 square kilometres in the Scenic Rim Region, over the range from the coast, which makes it a hinterland town rather than a Gold Coast suburb and it would tell you so itself. The 2021 census counted 1,436 residents, up from 1,229 in 2016. Canungra Creek, a tributary of the Albert River, runs through the town and supplies its water, and Mount Misery stands 530 metres on the northwestern boundary. Witheren and Beechmont hold the ridge country east, Wongawallan and Guanaba lie toward the Gold Coast foothills, and the wider Scenic Rim runs west toward Beaudesert. Every service the town uses has had to decide whether it is coming over the hill. We settled that long ago: Canungra books onto our over-the-range run with Witheren, and pickup and delivery are included on it.
A country town does not want a promise. It wants a day, a driver, and a rug that comes back right.
Cottages in the streets, farms up the valley roads
The town is a working one. Timber cottages and Queenslanders line the village streets, rural properties and small farms sit up every valley road, and at weekends the cafes fill with walkers and motorcyclists who have come over the range for the drive. House rugs run to hard-working wool in front of winter fires, and the rural properties send us exactly the load immersion washing was designed for: dust, dog hair and fireplace ash in layers. The guest accommodation adds its own set of pieces that turn over every weekend and cannot be out of service for long. All of it moves the same way. Our driver takes the rolled rug from the door on the run day, it is washed by hand at Yatala, and it is delivered back on an agreed date.
Cold clear winters, storms down the creek
A valley town breathes differently from the coast. Winters here are cold and clear enough to keep a fireplace going for months, summer storms funnel down the creek and arrive fast, and the rural roads powder up whenever the weather dries out. Ash and grit settle through a wool pile to the base where nothing dry reaches them, while damp presses must into the underside from the other direction, and the two problems meet in the middle of every good rug in town. One immersion wash at Yatala clears both at once, because the whole rug goes into water rather than being worked at from the top. It then finishes in our controlled drying room and comes home completely dry, which no verandah in this valley can guarantee.

Yatala holds both the registered Gold Coast office and the floor the washing happens on. Anything to do with a quote or a run day is settled with the office. The rug itself only ever rides with our driver.
Over the hill and down to the floor
The town does not make the trip. Canungra rides the over-the-range run with Witheren, collection and return are part of the booking, and the window is set once we know the day.
Two names, forty years of trains, and a hotel that started politely
A town that has always had to be reached.
Canungra is recorded two ways: Caningera, for small owls, and gungunga, a long flat or clearing.
Two honest readings beat one invented certainty. It is how we quote as well: you get what the inspection actually shows, not what a script says it should show.
The town's name carries two recorded readings and keeps them both. One account records Caningera as an Aboriginal word for small owls. Another records the Yugambeh gungunga, meaning a long flat or clearing, which describes exactly the valley floor the town sits on. Neither reading is stated as certain and we will not pick one for the sake of a neater sentence. Either way the name was on the district before the town was, and the owls and the clearing are both still here.
Trains ran the valley from 2 July 1915 to 1 July 1955, almost exactly forty years.
We make the trip too. Canungra books onto our over-the-range run, the driver collects the rolled rug at the door, and it is back the following week washed and completely dry.
Canungra spent forty years on the railway map. The branch line opened on 2 July 1915 and closed on 1 July 1955, one day short of the anniversary. Before the trains the town had already put itself on the postal map, with a receiving office from 1888 and a post office recorded by May 1907. The line is long lifted, but the valley still moves the way it always did, over the range and down the creek roads, and every service that matters to the town has learned to make the trip.
Built as the Bellissima guest house in 1916, extended into the Canungra Hotel in 1927.
Country towns judge a service the old way, on whether you show up and stand behind the work. Free pickup on the run, honest assessment, and a free re-wash guarantee are our version of a handshake.
The pub on the hill started politely. The Bellissima guest house went up in 1916, was sold and extended in 1927 to become the Canungra Hotel, and after a 1937 fire was rebuilt into the landmark that still watches the main street. Around it the town assembled the rest of its life, with four churches between 1900 and 1954 and a war memorial unveiled on Anzac Day 1938. Weekends now fill the verandah with walkers and riders, but the hotel is still where the valley's news gets exchanged.

Canungra questions, answered straight
Do you actually come over the range, or is Canungra too far?
We come over. Canungra rides our over-the-range run with Witheren, so it is a scheduled stop rather than a favour, and pickup and delivery are included on it. You get told the run day, the driver collects the rolled rug at the door, and it comes back on an agreed date the following week.
Can fireplace ash really be washed out of a wool rug?
Yes, and it makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Ash is finer than household dust, so it travels down past the pile to the foundation instead of sitting where a vacuum can find it. A full bath floats that layer out and the rinse carries it away along with the road dust it has been mixing with all winter.
The dog urinated on the rug. Will the smell keep coming back?
Not once the residue has gone. Urine reaches the backing, which is why a spray works for a week or two and then the next damp spell brings it up again. The bath washes that layer out, an enzyme stage settles the source, and if the urine has already moved any dye you are told at the assessment, not afterwards.
We run guest accommodation. How quickly can a room rug come back?
About 7 days is standard, and there is a 48-hour express option at additional cost when a booking will not wait. Either way it comes back dried right through rather than merely surface dry, which matters on a piece going straight back into a guest room.
Do you also collect from Witheren, Beechmont and Wongawallan?
Yes, along with Guanaba, Clagiraba and Lower Beechmont. Those share the range and ridge runs with Canungra, which lets several addresses in the valley go out together on the one trip. There is $20 off for each additional rug in a collection.
How is the price decided for a Canungra rug?
By the rug: its fibre, its size and how hard it has been worked. Nothing about that can be judged over the phone, which is why the look comes before the number. The figure we name is the one on your invoice, and getting the rug over the range and back is counted inside it.
