Rug washing Advancetown, up the valley road
Big country, small population
Advancetown covers 63.6 square kilometres of the Nerang valley about eight kilometres southwest of Nerang, and 528 people lived here at the 2021 census, up from 482 in 2016 and 352 in 2011. Advancetown Lake fills the middle of the locality and the homes stand on the ridges and valley roads around the water, with Clagiraba and Mount Nathan to the north, Nerang and Gilston to the east, Mudgeeraba and Tallai to the southeast, Beechmont on the ridge to the west and Numinbah Valley upstream to the south. That is a lot of ground and not many houses, which produces a particular kind of customer: self-reliant, used to doing things themselves, and reasonably sceptical of any city service that will not travel. We do travel, and pickup and delivery stay included at this distance, which is usually the first thing anybody out here wants confirmed.
Out here things are kept rather than thrown away, and the good rug in front of the fire is usually decades old.
Homesteads, horses and the rug in front of the fire
The housing is acreage and rural living: homesteads and ranch-style homes on big blocks, horse properties, sheds and long gravel drives, with timber floors under quality wool rugs. Slow-combustion heaters run all winter. Dogs are working animals and house animals in the same day. Fine valley dust travels inside on everything and everyone that comes through the door, and the gravel drives keep supplying it all year. The rugs here are large, loved and worked hard, and none of them can realistically be dealt with on a property no matter how big the shed is. Ours is the only sensible arrangement: the driver comes to the gate, takes the rolled rug, and brings it back washed and dried right through on an agreed date. Nobody has to load anything into a ute or find a Saturday for it.
Mist on the low ground, ash in the pile
A valley beside a big body of water keeps its damp. Morning mist settles on the low ground, winters run cooler than they do on the coast, and summer humidity comes up the valley with the storms. Add gravel-road dust and the fine ash a fireplace produces over a long winter and you have the standard hinterland rug load, ground into the base of the pile where a vacuum has never reached. Immersion washing floats the lot out and the rinse takes it away. The piece then finishes in our own climate-controlled room, so it arrives back dry whatever the valley happens to be doing that week. A rug returned damp to a misty valley house is worse than one left unwashed.

Stain Removal

Ash on a damp night behaves quite differently from ordinary dust and can set into a wool pile if somebody rubs at it. Testing decides the treatment and afterwards the result is stated plainly: out, or improved. Nothing at all is attempted on a rug that would not survive the attempt.

Restraint is most of the work out here. Scrub at a mark and it travels outward while the pile goes flat beneath, and the light picks up that difference from then on. So the touch stays light and the area is groomed afterwards. Where local work will not finish the job, you are told so plainly.

Rug Steam Cleaning
Save the slow method for the wool. The mat where the boots come off is machine made, hard-wearing and cheap to replace, and extraction is what it should get.

Rug Moth Treatment
Moth grubs work wool in the still places, under a sideboard or behind a piece that has not moved in years, and a big homestead has plenty of both.
Winter puts the good wool in front of the fire and the spare pieces in a cupboard, and the cupboard is where this happens. A treated bath resolves it in one cycle and the rinse water takes the debris out. Only then is the loss visible, and storage gets covered before the rug goes home.

Stain Protection
Reliably, something goes over in front of a fire eventually. A clear finish put on at the end of the wash keeps that on the surface rather than in the foundation.
It works by delay rather than protection. A drink still at the top of the pile after a few minutes gets wiped; the same drink at the foundation becomes a booking on the next valley run. Nothing you can see or feel about the rug alters, and it is applied at the wash floor.

A hotel, a village under the water, and a name that came back
A valley that holds on to what is its own.
Ernest Belliss opened his hotel on the Numinbah road corner in 1905, and the settlement took its name.
A district named after the place everyone actually went suits a service built on turning up. The driver comes to the gate, takes the rolled rug and brings it back washed and dry.
Timber-cutters worked this valley from the 1870s, David Yuan set up a sawmill in 1881, and as late as the 1930s up to two dozen bullock teams were recorded hauling logs to the railway at Nerang. The name came from the pub. Ernest Belliss opened a hotel on the corner of the Numinbah road in 1905, the settlement around it became Advancetown, and Belliss donating land for the school is recorded as what made the name stick. He sold up in March 1924, the original timber building was lost to fire in July 1933 and its replacement opened in February 1934, and the Advancetown Hotel trades on the valley road to this day.
The original Advancetown settlement site now lies beneath the water of Advancetown Lake.

The first Advancetown is not on any road you can drive. When the Nerang valley became the city's water storage in the 1970s, the old settlement site, the closed school ground included, passed under the rising water of Advancetown Lake. The school had already finished its work, opening in 1909 and closing for good in 1960 as the valley's families thinned out. Today's Advancetown lives on the slopes around the lake instead, and the district's name carries the memory of a village the water keeps.
Officially renamed Latimer in 1979, the locality got its own name back in 1985.

For six years Advancetown was not called Advancetown. On 31 March 1979 the locality was officially renamed Latimer, and the district spent the early 1980s with one name on the maps and another in every conversation. Locals kept saying Advancetown, and on 11 May 1985 the old name was officially restored. Few places anywhere can say their name outlived both its own town site and its own abolition, and the story says everything about how this valley holds on to what is theirs.

Our homestead rug is very large. Is that a problem?
No. Oversized valley pieces are ordinary work for our floor, and nothing is turned away on size alone. The rug goes into the bath whole rather than in sections, and it is dried in a controlled room before it comes back up the valley.
Can fireplace ash actually be removed from wool?
Yes, and it is one of the most satisfying jobs we do. Ash is finer than household dust so it settles further into the pile, which is why a hearth rug reads grey by the end of winter. An immersion bath floats it out of the foundation and the rinse carries it away with the gravel dust.
The dog urinated on the rug by the fire. Will the smell come back?
Not once the residue is out of the rug. Valley damp is what keeps bringing a sprayed smell back, because the urine itself is sitting in the backing untouched. The bath washes that layer clear, an enzyme stage settles what caused it, and colour damage, if there is any, gets described at the assessment rather than later.
