The name that stuck came from further away: an early settler of the Foote family is recorded as naming the place after his wife's birthplace, Swanbank in Lanarkshire, Scotland. A Scottish riverbank name has sat on this Queensland coal country ever since, one of the quieter naming stories on the Ipswich map.

Swanbank's seams fed collieries for generations, and from the mid-1960s the coal was burned on the spot. The first generating unit ran in 1966, Swanbank A was commissioned in 1967 and worked until 2005, and Swanbank B ran from 1971 into the early 2010s. The site's working life did not end with coal. The gas-fired Swanbank E station was commissioned in 2002 and still generates today, which keeps this locality doing the same job it has done for sixty years.
Heritage steam trips have run on Swanbank's old coal branch line since 1978.
Volunteers keeping century-old machinery in service is repair rather than replace at full scale. A good wool rug rewards the same instinct, washed properly instead of thrown out.
The branch railway that once served the district's mines never went quiet. Since 1978 the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway has run heritage steam and diesel trips through Swanbank on the old colliery line, with restored locomotives and timber carriages doing the work coal wagons used to. It is one of the few places near Brisbane where a working steam train is a regular sight rather than a special occasion.
