A plain quote for the cottage rugs
Nobody in these streets wants a sales pitch. The rug is inspected, the figure comes from what is actually in front of us, and if washing is not worth it we say so.

Rug washing Blackstone, where things are made to last
A district built by people who stayed
Blackstone covers 3.8 square kilometres in the City of Ipswich, 5.4 kilometres from the Ipswich centre and 37.2 kilometres southwest of Brisbane. Just 1,144 people lived here at the 2021 census, on quiet streets between Blackstone Hill and the old flats. The district was first called Bundamba Creek, and the postmistress Margaret Orr proposed the name Blackstone, recorded as being taken from a place in Ireland. What stands today is timber workers' homes and cottages from the coal decades, held mostly by long-term owners and steadily joined by renovators. These are honest houses with honest rugs, and the people in them ask direct questions and expect direct answers.
The rugs here have earned their keep twice over. A proper wash usually buys them another twenty years.
What we mean by honest assessment
It means telling you when a rug is not worth washing. That happens occasionally: a backing already breaking down, seams opening along a whole edge, a cheap machine made piece where the wash costs more than the replacement. In those cases you hear it at the inspection, before any work has started and before anything has been spent. The far more common outcome is the opposite. A rug looks finished because thirty years of settled inland dust has collected beneath the tips of the pile, flattening the colour so evenly that nobody noticed it happening. The fibre is intact, the dye is intact, and a full immersion bath brings both back. Value gets measured carefully in these streets, so we hand people the facts to measure with instead of a recommendation with our interests inside it. None of this is complicated, and none of it is dressed up. You get told what is in front of us, in the order we found it, and the decision about what happens next stays with you throughout.
Inland heat, storm damp and the run east
Sitting well inland, Blackstone gets summers hotter than the city's and takes the storm cells off the ranges before Brisbane sees them. Old timber homes breathe better than new ones do, yet a shut front room still lets the wet months put damp into wool, and the dry weeks grind dust in between times. Come autumn a rug here is holding both, in layers. A vacuum head reaches neither of them. Immersion takes them out from under the knots and the drying room afterwards finishes the piece properly. Reckon on 50 kilometres and 40 to 45 minutes, out to the Cunningham Highway then east on the motorways. A booking here joins the same scheduled day as Bundamba and Booval, so one rug is an ordinary stop rather than a trip anyone has to justify.

A coal king, a castle on the hill and a choir that never stopped
A Welsh community built here and left a great deal behind.
The Welsh miner who opened this field and peopled it from Wales.
A trade town built on doing one thing properly suits us well. We have washed rugs by the same method for 29 years, by hand, at our own facility.
Lewis Thomas established one of the first mines in this district in 1866 and opened his Aberdare Mine in 1876, and the coal made him one of colonial Queensland's wealthiest men. He brought Welsh mining families to Blackstone in numbers and they built a community in their own image: a public school by 1887, a School of Arts by 1891, a soccer club by 1890. In 1881 he won permission for a private railway that had grown by 1903 into a loop line linking the district's mines.
A 49 room mansion built in 1890 and demolished to mine the coal beneath it.
The grandest house in the district stood on the value underneath it. Rugs work the same way, because the worth is in the fibre and a proper wash is what protects it.
Lewis Thomas crowned Blackstone Hill with Brynhyfryd, Welsh for pleasant hill, built between 1889 and 1890 to a George Brockwell Gill design at a recorded cost of 13,000 pounds. It ran to 49 rooms, with imported marble fireplaces, Welsh slate floors, cedar joinery and electric light. The end was pure Blackstone: sold in 1934 to Rylance Collieries, it was demolished in 1937 so the coal seams under its foundations could be worked.
The Welsh church whose 1887 eisteddfod grew into a state tradition.
A choir that has held its standard since 1886 would recognise our wash floor. Same method, same care, every rug, every time.
The United Welsh Church on Thomas Street opened in 1886, and on New Year's Day 1887 it held an eisteddfod, the Welsh festival of music and verse. A local choir formed to contest it and never stopped: the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir, established 1886 and reputedly Queensland's longest continuously performing choir. Those early Blackstone eisteddfodau drew Brisbane choirs within two years and grew into the Queensland Eisteddfod tradition still contested today.

Blackstone questions, answered straight
How much does rug cleaning in Blackstone cost?
Dimensions, fibre and condition settle it between them, so nothing is quoted blind. We look at the rug on the Yatala floor first, the number that follows is fixed, and the Ipswich day carries both legs. If washing will not repay the money, you hear it then.
Is a thirty year old cottage rug actually worth washing?
Usually yes, and we have no interest in claiming otherwise when it is not. Most of what looks like wear is settled dust below the surface of the pile, and it lifts out. Where a rug genuinely has finished, that is said plainly, and nothing at all has been lost by asking the question.
What if a week is too long to wait?
Then the 48-hour express service applies, a two-day return at additional cost, kept for the occasions that cannot wait. The ordinary schedule is about seven days. In both cases drying continues until the base is dry, not merely until the surface feels right.
Our cat has urinated on the wool rug. Will that smell ever properly clear?
It will clear, provided treatment reaches the depth the accident reached. What soaked down sits on the underside, so sprays hold it quiet only until the next damp spell. The bath pushes the residue clear from below and enzymes take care of the remainder. Where the dye has been affected, that is named at the assessment.
Do you collect from Bundamba, Booval and Silkstone as well?
Yes. Blackstone shares a scheduled Ipswich day with those neighbours, so a relative one suburb over can go on the same collection. Any piece past the first has $20 off, which is worth organising if rugs are sitting in two different houses.
Our hallway is narrow and the runner is long. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Long narrow runners wash well and the length is no obstacle at our facility. The only request is that the rug is rolled instead of folded when the driver arrives, since a fold puts a crease into an old wool runner that can take a fortnight to settle out.
